Perhaps we do need further race categories or existing race categories ammended to accomodate races like this.

    Or perhaps not.

Fell races as listed in the FRA Calendar are those that supposedly meet the FRA criteria. If they don't then they should not be FRA Calendar listed fell races.

No one forced Allan to put his race in the FRA Calendar and no one forced him to lie about the height figures to gain inclusion.

There are several well known "fell" races not listed in the Calendar that survive so if Allan's race is so attractive presumably people would beat a path to his door anyway...?

What next? Can I organise a race round my garden and special plead that my race doesn't quite meet the FRA criteria but I 'd like it to be included in the Calendar, oh and insured by the FRA as well?

Thirty years ago there were only around 40 races in the FRA Calendar. Not many I agree but at least they were fell races and not a tour of my lawns.

I take your point Edam, though i feel trying to draw an analogy between a race on your back garden lawn and a proper moorland race is a bit extreme.

I'd not considered that FITC, I bet Edam is a specialist turf and lawn supplier and lives in a massive country estate with huge grounds and a colossal lanscape.

jeez , no wonder alan gets cheesed off with it all
he tries to introduce a new race to the calendar which is not easy, gives up his time etc etc, okay criteria should be met but im sure he just really wants to put a race on and give a bit back
no wonder on his website he says it could be his last year
im surprised he doesnt stand outside the summit pub and shout bollox to it all.
    see you all tomorrow
alan, the words patience and saint spring to mind

I want to organise a fellrace round the valley/woods i live in - you get about 500ft in 2miles - do you think it would make it into the calendar?

you have to do the course four times to make it 8m and 2000ft but it would be REALLY confusing for the competitors!

the race will be called the 'gledhow w' as it involves running up and down the same tiny bit of innercity woodland 5 times ! plenty of parking at tesco - infact - they can sponsor it and provide us with tea and cakes after the race, an opportunity for them to contribute to the community perhaps!

dont think we can call it a fell race though - daz - we have to call it an 'suburban steep sided offroad non competitive community excercise opportunity' (sponsored by tesco)
