My Wife ia an ambulance technician and she has to treat some patients with salbutamol. At the normal doses, some patients hands shake, showing the power of this drug at recommended levels. She isn't permitted to overdose them.As Daz H has implied, endurance athletes are abusing this drug and still testing within the permitted levels.
Another consideration is the cumulative effect of all those doses of drug over say a period of 15-20 years. It's bound to affect the chemistry of the body.
In the 1970s a drug called Clenbuterol was developed for asthmatic animals. The scientists observed the animals, and realised something was happening to them aside from being able to breath more freely. They were gaining weight, muscular weight! When these animals were tested, they showed an increase in bulk of 20%, and a loss of large quantities of fat.
Athletes soon cottoned on and started using clenbuterol. They found that taking big doses didn't necessarilly work any better than small doses. In fact only 20mcg(1/1000 of a gram)a day caused significant muscle growth in only 2 weeks.Yet this drug was supposed to be for asthma, and the side effects were unexpected.Clenbuterol is in the same group of drugs as Salbutamol(beta2 agonist).
Paula's body chemistry has been changed through the use of this drug.Ok she trains hard and also has strong will, BUT I believe its boosted her performance.
Additionally athletes who take drugs, don't feel the same degree of discomfort as the rest of us(it becomes easier).
The question is, what do we expect from our fellow competitors, when we stand on the starting line?
