    Re: Types of head torch

I have the Myobelt XP (the one with the wires and batterry pack), and as I generally use this for longer night runs/races I normally have a bumbag so I stuff the battery pack into it as I find it bounces off the waist strap/trousers/shorts etc. The lead is long enough to route most ways, inside jacket etc so I never have a problem. I also use the Zipka but I don't find it as bright as the XP

    Re: Types of head torch

    Thanks for the advice everybody.

In the end I went for a Myo...partly because they had one in Hebden Bridge (a bit more expensive than online, but I could have one now!).

I can't believe how light it is, I always thought head torches were heavy, cumbersome things. Doesn't seem to shift at all when I run/jump on the spot and I can't even feel I'm wearing it.

The dark is no longer my enemy!

And now you have your brand new Myo if you are realy sad you go and modify is as per the instructions here http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/...&highlight=myo

Have not done this to a Myo but have done the equiverlent to a Princton tech Apex. Curently working on a multi led custom build though for night Orientearing.

The headtorch worked well, and I could hardly feel I had it on. But boy, was that scary! I ran alongside a railway line, through some woods after watching the film 'I am legend!' Its eerie how you get this thin channel of light and everything round the outside is extra black.

There is no doubt about it; using an artificial light source does ruin your night vision. On Thursday nights, I do hill reps on a steep but well surfaced farm lane on the NW corner of Bowland, that does not warrant the use of a torch. Last night was overcast and no moon, but visibility was ok and I really felt in touch with my surroundings, able to see trees a good 100 yards away and fabulous views across Morecambe Bay. With the head torch on, all that would have been in the 'invisible blackness' outside the beam of light.
One of the 'problems' with the Petzl XP range (Tikka & Myo) is that, to obtain the range, they use a narrow beam (or spot lamp) lens and at relatively close quarters ( upto 25m ) the pool of light is too concentrated (not wide enough). True, you can use the diffuser to obtain more of a spread of light but this seriously eats into the emitted lumens and in the case of a 1W Tikka XP it leaves barely enough output to give clear ground definition only 3 or 4 metres ahead.

Petzl Myo XP okay for training at nights on the fells. For racing it has to be the Hope light. But is not cheap.
Offer here for XP £38 http://secure.lakesrunner.com/petzl-...html?p=product
