    Re: Knee Pain

From a surgeon who specializes in knee problems:

"The sensitivity and specificity of MRI scans varies between conditions (chondral damage, meniscal tears, ligament injuries) and is between 80 and 95%. There is therefore a 5 to 20% chance something is found at arthroscopy that can be treated in people with a normal MRI scan. I do this quite often and it is rare not to find anything in someone who has such clear reduction of mobility."

I did not realize MRIs had such a high false negative rate.

    Re: Knee Pain

Having NEVER had any knee trouble in my life, I sprained some pinning tendons in my left leg last December. Regardless of running or walking, the innerside of the my left knee was painful.

After some rest and a few abortive attempts at resuming running (thank goodness there was no Tanky's last year !) I visited the physio. His suggestion was to cycle.

I overcame my reluctance (not a pushbike fan) and ventured out regularly for several weeks.

Guess what ? Knee is now OK, I've managed a couple hour long runs this week. Plus, I've got to like being on the bike so will keep that on too.

All the excercise and keeping the knee in one plane of motion has done the trick !

    Re: Knee Pain

Just been told that I have mild OA of the medial tibio-femoral and patello-femoral compartments and a large joint effusion.

In summary GP said that it was self inflicted. However I have managed to get a referral to a sports physio.

How utterly irresponsible of you to keep fit eh?

Poor attitude at times from doctors, I had a specialist doctor ask me why I was seeing him after spraining my ankle. His stance was that seeing as how I was back to full activity it wasn't worthwhile seeing him, to which I replied "if you had seen me 6 months ago when I did the injury instead of me having to wait so long for the referral I wouldn't have had to make up my own rehab routine would I"

    Hope you get sorted Wycoller

    Re: Knee Pain

I've had pain in my knee cap for about a week. Slowly easing but still feeling a little discomfort going down the stairs. My physio thinks it's ITB but from what I've read, this normally causes pain to be felt down the side of the knee. For me it is more central. Any other suggestions?

I'm very disappointed as I was supposed to be doing the 3 Peaks on Saturday and training had gone well until now. Clutching at straws I know but has anybody else had quick recoveries from this type of injury?

    Re: Knee Pain

Rest it, Ice it and wear a compression bandage of some sort (I use an old prosport knee "support" for when my knee is hurting) and also try putting a cushion under your mattress at the foot end to raise it slightly when you sleep. You're in the lap of the gods now though, provided you do everything you can to rest it it might be good for the day but no guarantees unfortunately

    Best of luck
