Al forget all the technical stuff , that will come.
Your best bet would be to have a word with our Emma and go down to Ribble Bikes one day and get fitted out.
They will no doubt do you a good deal
Emma will advise you on spec etc. But Dom is right , its the fit thats important.
They do loads of frames at different prices so should have something to suit your pocket.
Start saving though as its not a cheap sport.
You could always have a go on Emmas ( hardly used winter hack)
Id bet your about the same size.
Toffer.....whilst stacking the shelfs of Isle 18 last night, putting the likes of long-life milk, plain flour and jelly on....i was thinking about bikes etc etc and your 100 miles challenge popped into my head and a little idea came to mind.
As im probably the weakest cyclist with some hope of trying to do the 100 miles (but no chance on the time)....could you come up with a kind of (cant think of the words) levels to work up to.
Say 50,60,70,80 mile rides in a certain amount of time?
What do want to do Al, just cover 100 miles or cover it in a certain time, all depends on terrain and weather conditions. If you just want to cover the distance, build up your mileage sensibly.
I've covered 100 miles a few times, slowest time 8 hours, fastest 5 hours 17 mins, the latter was easier due to good weather and flatter terrain.
Hills and Guinness!

I once did 130 miles in a day, over Shap fell with full panniers. Seemed a good idea when i started. Lands end- John o Groats was a very good trip. Just need to work up to it Al.
