Never mind the weather mate just get out there
Yesterdays ride. The etape du dales.110miles and about 12,000ft. The weather was shocking but I have trained for months for this and managed a 6hrs 36mins which took me 25mins inside the gold standard of 7hrs and 9th place overall. Headwinds, sidewinds, hail, driving rain etc etc etc.
Average of 17mph according to the printout which I was a bit done by as I know if I would have managed 18mph I would have got i that special place of sub 6 1/2 hrs.
Only managed about 15 miles in a group, the rest solo. Skipped up the climbs and def must have topped 50mph on the first descent. A great ride and apart from say the Fred Witton I dont think there is any harder sportive in the UK.
Every bikie should do it once.
Hardest bit has to be the trudge to Tan Hill were its always a headwind.
Ady will know the cycling terrain which is just the best.
Blimey Daz, bl**dy good ride, especially in those conditions. Chapeau to you!!
Just managed to sneak out for 30 miles stomp in the gales after work tonight, fairly feeble effort when set alongside Etape du Dales. Good 80 miler at the weekend, one more long one this weekend then it's up to Carlisle for a little cycle up to JOG....
As Toffer says
Blimey Daz, bl**dy good ride
Much less impressive ride for me, 3hrs pottering about rough back lanes on the rigid mtb, nabbed a new (to me marilyn) en route. Seemed to spend most of the ride pedaling into the wind
Cracking ride Daz. Got my eye on the RONDE VAN OOST LANCASHIRE, and the HELL OF THE NORTH for next year.

Found some nice cobbled climbs just a couple of minutes from where I live for some training for the Ronde.
Rode the Rapha Hell of the North this year and really enjoyed it... amazing how quickly you're in countryside considering you start in central London and the beer, chips and Paris Roubaix coverage on the big screen at the end is great... not bad for a free ride! Nice little video here http://vimeo.com/22694993
Ronde Van Oost Lancashire looks great... have just downloaded the GPS trace so will probably head up one weekend over the summer.
WOW! Brilliant riding Daz :) < bows down >
I have been doing some poncy stuff, like race a circuit race on an airfield and do an uphill only mountain TT... all good fun, but not to be compared to daz's efforts :-O
On a satisfcatory note: the two races I have done so far have definitely shown me that
a- the knee is up to that kind of effort/loading and
b- I seem to be stronger than last year!!!
Time to put some designated sprint training and speedwork in me thinks, to build on this :)

Got out today for just under 20 cold, wet and very windy miles. Ride included the first up and over of Holme Moss I've done which felt hard going on the ascent due to the weather, and scary on the descent again due to the weather. Pretty much feathered the brakes the whole way down out of fear that if I didn't, come the tight bends I'd be over the edge. Now got annoying pad marks on my lovely rims. Any tips for getting em off? Also any tips for descending in the rain would be much appreciated.
Despite the weather I throughly loved the ride, there was something strangely beautiful and wonderful about being out on the misty, wet roads all alone (apart from woodhead that is). And to top that I can feel myself getting better with each ride which is certainly putting a smile on my face.
My usual 54 mile route tonight on very tired legs still. Weather was dry here but very windy. Took it steadier tonight and met 3 Derby Mercury riders coming back down the A6 and they let me sit in with them.
Eavsey you will get used to rding in the wet. Its wise to be cautious. I put my centre of gravity slightly further back if I am cornering but then again Its an individual choice. For straight descents I sit on the toptube with hands on the tops and keep really low. You will see some of the pros doing it in races. It takes a bit of mastering but its quite comfy.
Cleaned my bike after the ride and I just use soapy water on my rims and a wet cloth.
24 mile this lunch time. Nice to be out and just pottering round.
Managed 1700 feet up on the moorland roads round Junction 22 M62.
Felt good on the quicker downs as I had just fitted my brand new Ultremo ZX tyres. Always nice with a fresh set of rubber.
I cycle to work and back most days.
On friday in the rain i was travelling along the leeds/liverpool canal,i was near to apperley bridge(sunken barge)
it was about 19.00 and raining, the ruts were full of water and some sections were getting a bit sloppy.
i was clocking about 16-18 mph.
this section is quite rough and difficult to find a good line.
i went through a puddle,my wheel was knocked side ways,i had a choice, right myself left, fall flat on my face, right, fall side ways into the canal,or keep straight into the canal.
i stood on my pedals and headed into the water.i thought my front wheel would take the impact on the bottom but instead, because of the drop i started to somersault.I was under water trying to figure which way was up,while slowly blowing down my nose to stop water entering.i saw a faint green blur of the sun,
i got to the surface, feet still in the spds, unclipped on foot and swam bike in tow to the side.pulled the bike and self out.
checked bike, just chain off, coated in a nice green slime and the odd leaf.
checked self, fine.absolutely soaked,i had no option but to burst out laughing.fortunately there was no one about.
i made my way home(about another 4 miles)i really hammered it as the cold was starting to bite.
got home and just threw everything in the wash, showered then steam cleaned bike.
my lights have stopped working,my mobile has fallen out with me and my shoes smell something special.
a good experience is priceless.
Wow storming etape Daz
Dylan you just made me laugh!
30 minutes of hill reps on a steep twisty cobbled number I've found, and then a little 6 mile loop ride cool down. Legs weren't too clever today so ride cut short.
Dylan,
I too live in Thackley and often cycle on the canal past the sunken barge (wonder what happened to the interesting character who used to live in it..?)
Next time you are about to attempt one of these stunts please let me know as I think a performance like that is definitely deserving of an audience....!;)
Neil
Dylan, EPIC :)
Did my first race of the season last night... managed to stay at the front, tried to break away a couple of times, got chased back... was a tad fast, Garmin says 72 kms in 1.30.34 and that includes the neutralised section :w00t:
Got complacent on the 2nd half of the last lap... was too far back in the bunch for final sprint and ended just inside the top 20 but on hindsight should have tried for top 10 as legs feeling fresh afterwards... mind, not bad in a men's race with a full field of 80... and I have the vets handicap national champs road race tomorrow, so probably good to not have given it all :) Best of all, knee held out! Oh and I never have had the need for bigger gears... but last night I felt 53/12 wasn't quite enough, tanking down the dual carriageway going through and off with the break at 58 km/hr :w00t:
Well done hanneke on your race. Remember one of the most important things in racing is being in the right place at the right time. But glad your comeback is going well. A steady 45 miles for me last night and then a hard spin session follwed by 10 miles to home.
You maybe want an 11 sprocket on for racing. Always handy to have it.
I hope you was keeping those guys in check. Well done again
Windy(very) and wet 55 miles this morning. Nearly got blown off the bike a few times on the Rhigos, just as well I was riding a solid Alu number rather than anything fancy! Scuttled back down the valley for lunch rather than push it over the bleak looking Bwlch.
Pouf.
100 miles Midland Monster Sportive lovely route through the staffs moors and derby dales, but strong winds made a fairly tough ride a brutal one! Tour of Wessex next week...
I sat on the turbo on the patio yesterday morning, doing standing start intervals... in a howling headwind, to keep me cool... the occasional rain helped as well :) Deemed it too dangerous to head out, thought I'd get blown away! Managed an easy ride in the evening after work though with a mate for shelter. Wind had died down by then. Picked up again in the night now blowing a gale again, so glad it is a restday today :)
Oh and another race on Saturday... bliddy flippin 'ard is all I say about it... :)
I hate wind... crosswinds blow me off the bike, headwinds make me go backwards... don't mind a tailwind though ;)
I remember toe-straps.................and bicycle clips, still got some somewhere.
Attachment 4729 Hann these are the wheels you need when the wind dies down. I thought it was you when I saw the advert. Are you racing for campagnolo now ?????
LOL Daz :) nah, no campy sh*te for me, I am a Shimano lady ;)
I only started cycling recently Daz, so no, I dont remember toestraps... think you are right about roadies... it is so hard, not many do it and certainly even fewer women... now explain, why am I doing this bikle racing lark? ;)
Bit belated post but 12 of us did the Pennine Bridleway, Kirkby Stephen back to Penistone, over 4 days starting Royal wedding day.
146.5 miles (110 off road) with 7070 metres of uphill. A brilliant long weekend out.
[QUOTE=Hanneke;412808]I sat on the the patio yesterday morning, in a howling headwind, to keep me cool... dangerous thought I'd get blown away!

First stage of the Tour of Wessex 107 miles around Somerset and Cheddar Gorge. Stage 2 tomorrow 117 miles....
Nowt today but I was a giving it some around n up n down longridge fell on the old steel crosser yesterday, But must have given it to much as ive snapped a fork!
God I've had enough of this wind!!!!!
VERY windy and cold women's omnium at herne Hill yesterday... second ever track racing and first ever on an outdoor track. Was interesting, but too much getting cold inbetween short efforts. Think I prefer road racing...
Recovery ride today, in full winter gear, it was wet and windy... made me feel almost like a fell runner again :)
Yes windy but its just a case of simply riding it out. Great ride today, i reckon about 57miles, even had a cake stop. Some cracking scenery in the peak district.
Heavy rain one minute, sun the next , wind blowing strong.
So strong it could have blown a rider off their bike, very gusty.
Bring it on i say
It wont last much longer.
Stage 2 of The Tour of Wessex 118 miles very lumpy and windy by the coast. Felt stronger but suffered more if that makes sense. 100 miles over Exmoor tomorrow...
