Yesterdays ride. The etape du dales.110miles and about 12,000ft. The weather was shocking but I have trained for months for this and managed a 6hrs 36mins which took me 25mins inside the gold standard of 7hrs and 9th place overall. Headwinds, sidewinds, hail, driving rain etc etc etc.
Average of 17mph according to the printout which I was a bit done by as I know if I would have managed 18mph I would have got i that special place of sub 6 1/2 hrs.
Only managed about 15 miles in a group, the rest solo. Skipped up the climbs and def must have topped 50mph on the first descent. A great ride and apart from say the Fred Witton I dont think there is any harder sportive in the UK.
Every bikie should do it once.
Hardest bit has to be the trudge to Tan Hill were its always a headwind.
Ady will know the cycling terrain which is just the best.

Just managed to sneak out for 30 miles stomp in the gales after work tonight, fairly feeble effort when set alongside Etape du Dales. Good 80 miler at the weekend, one more long one this weekend then it's up to Carlisle for a little cycle up to JOG....

Much less impressive ride for me, 3hrs pottering about rough back lanes on the rigid mtb, nabbed a new (to me marilyn) en route. Seemed to spend most of the ride pedaling into the wind

Found some nice cobbled climbs just a couple of minutes from where I live for some training for the Ronde.
Rode the Rapha Hell of the North this year and really enjoyed it... amazing how quickly you're in countryside considering you start in central London and the beer, chips and Paris Roubaix coverage on the big screen at the end is great... not bad for a free ride! Ronde Van Oost Lancashire looks great... have just downloaded the GPS trace so will probably head up one weekend over the summer.

I have been doing some poncy stuff, like race a circuit race on an airfield and do an uphill only mountain TT... all good fun, but not to be compared to daz's efforts :-O
On a satisfcatory note: the two races I have done so far have definitely shown me that
a- the knee is up to that kind of effort/loading and
b- I seem to be stronger than last year!!!
Time to put some designated sprint training and speedwork in me thinks, to build on this

Yes also clocked the Ronde Van Oost which I would have thought needs a recce or two. Cobbled climbs look great.

Got out today for just under 20 cold, wet and very windy miles. Ride included the first up and over of Holme Moss I've done which felt hard going on the ascent due to the weather, and scary on the descent again due to the weather. Pretty much feathered the brakes the whole way down out of fear that if I didn't, come the tight bends I'd be over the edge. Now got annoying pad marks on my lovely rims. Any tips for getting em off? Also any tips for descending in the rain would be much appreciated.
Despite the weather I throughly loved the ride, there was something strangely beautiful and wonderful about being out on the misty, wet roads all alone (apart from woodhead that is). And to top that I can feel myself getting better with each ride which is certainly putting a smile on my face.
