Nice afternoon for a bike ride. So off I went.
37 mile later and after visiting Halifax, Tod, Littleboro and a steady climb up Blackstone edge back to Sowerby and home.
I looked at the garmin to see I've averaged 16.4mph. Loads better than I used to do last year although there was only 2200ft of climb in the route.
Feeling fitter just need to cycle more.
Off to watch the Halfords race in Oldham after tea.
Weather is kind so should be an entertaining evening.

Not been on the bike since Sunday morning... A niggly shoulder (doc says bursitis) became seriously sore in the course of Tuesday, so forwent the crit I was going to race... Had to forego track training wednesday morning, and tonights circuit race hs also been abandoned... It got so bad, I have spent all of today hanging into some pillows on my bed, in a postion that gives the joint as much space as I can give it for the bursa to not impinge... AUCH AUCH auch :(
Doesn't look likely I will be racing the Etape de la Defonce, a two day stage race for teams I have been looking forward to :( It is this weekend and although the shoulder is better than yesterday this time, I fear it may need a few more days of rest :(
Coachy friend says rest... I am waiting till tomorrow morning before I call our team manager... :( Hope we have a reserve, otherwise it is no race for the team :(
Watch it on ITV4 tomorrow night.
Excellent race.
Got to take my hat off to them boys, they go at one hell of a pace.
Saw a couple of high speed spills and they get right back on again.
I walked the course and watche from all different positions.
Cracking finish to the race.
a 20 odd mile XC blast on some skinny woodsy trail with some locals who clearly train more than me... great fun. Certainly more fun that the swimming session this morning, 45 minutes of watching tiles pass slowly by!!
and Wiggo seems to be going well:thumbup:
Quite a dilema for you
Race or Rest. Can you not nip out on your bike today and see how you go. What about lifting your bars up a bit on your bike to ease the pain ??. Flip your stem around ? .
Maybe lower your seat a tad just for this race.
Good luck whatever you choose.
Interestingly Daz, it got worse when I stopped cycling... but am going to try a ride in a minute, when I leave work, then make my decision... If it is painful to ride or if it gets more painful after riding, I won't race... Thing is, working on the computer aggravates things so far, not the riding... :(
Just nipped out for a quick 5o miles. Bit windy but loads of bikies out down here.
Nearly had a cafe stop at ambergate but just resisted the lure of the cake.
Nice and sunny mind.
Richmond Park x 3 for me, plus there 'n' back. Busy it was, and legs pretty dead after a 10km race (run) earlier.
Finished strongly though. I'm getting there with this cyclling lark, gradually... Need some longer rides and climbs though to build endurance in the legs.
I went out for a swift 1.5 hour... legs still there, as taking it easy at 29.8 km/hr average and it is a tad lumpy around here... interestingly, now the shoulder feels BETTER not worse :( If only I had had a chance to test it yesterday, I would have been racing this weekend :(
Pinched my neighbours mtb in my mid revision interval to do 3*4 mile tts with 800ft ascent. Just over 1.25
No ones mentioned wiggins historic yes historic win in the dauphine race. I was so excited as he rode over the last climb.
A brilliant occasion, seeing one of ours on the podium.
Great stuff.
Eavesy a very special person who should be in your thoughts was born on this day in 1894. Mr francis pelisser. Master anquetil had a lot to thank him for.
He launched anquetil at exactly the right moment.
Not been following the cycling much lately :( I do however have a soft spot for Geraint Thomas :)
Went to the track this afternoon, for 2 hours of sprint training... 30 mins warmup, then 3x 500 and 3x 750 either standing or rolling start... Needless to say, I am knackered and my quads are tender, so it must have done some good :) spinning out on a 90 gear, so well pleased :)
Agree, terrific performance overall by Wiggo, I've just watched the Eurosport highlights I recorded at the weekend. I wonder how 8 days of DL will translate into 3 weeks of the Tour when it will get really attritional in the mountains, can he stay in touch with the big climbers?
Talking of the Dauphine, how about Hinault's crash in the race in the 1970s. Lucky or what?
It's at the beginning. can't edit.

Brilliant and thought provoking article from Michael Barry aka Le Metier: http://michaelbarry.ca/2011/06/organ...fety/#more-653
Must admit after wouters death it has had me thinking. I am a crazy descender and do take risks. Yep sit onmthe top tube at 50 mph and all that but its just such a buzz i suppose.
The road into grindelwald on the tour of switzerland yesterday was an amazing spectacle with sagan chasing down cunego.
You couldnt help but be amazed.
Its racing i suppose.
One of the best training days i ever had was one night when my dad passed me on the top road and i was going flat out down into kirk hallam and my mum wound down the window and said. Only you darren only you. I suppose not many mums witness their son doing 50mph on a bike 3 ft away whilst saying hello.
2 minutes later she had the kettle on and was telling me off for riding to fast
Interesting read that Donkey... as more and more racing cyclists get themsleves injured or even killed while racing and training and ever more amateurs do as well, this gives a lot of food for thought...
It's great to watch I agree but it's definitely getting more dangerous for them in towns with all the traffic calming measures. He's right about carbon too I've seen frames snap from crashes on the track.
But you're right riding bikes fast is always a risky business, I can remember overtaking a van on a descent in my teens and nearly getting wiped out. The magic 50mph mark was reached a fair few times in my youth too, I nearly got there coming off Exmoor in the Tour of Wessex but held back a bit in the wet.
One thing that surprised me during all these sportives is how so many people work so hard on their fitness but neglect the skills of cornering and descending, staying still and staying off the brakes.
My Dad said during La Marmotte loads of people's inner tubes were exploding from heat where they were breaking too much and overheating the rims on the Alpine descents!
I enjoy watching the pros descending as much as climbing. It's a real skill and show of bravery. They also know that the risk of an accident is much less than you may think. But if there was no risk attached it would detract from the spectacle and the 'buzz' as Daz puts it.
The problem is when teams or organisers push things too far as in the article. I hope there isn't a safety backlash as it would be a shame to sanitize the sport.
Good post Eavesy, I've enjoyed watching that a few times. Panache is the word I think.
What I like about the Hinault incident is the lack of helmet and the fact he immediately jumps on his bike and carries on. After checking his hair of course.
Re. breaking: I don't wear out my brake blocks much... had a conversation about that with club members the other day. They were surprised that I haven't replaced the ones for my training wheels or racing wheels (carbon and alloy rims, so different block for the different wheels) since I got them 3 years ago... Still plenty of life in them yet!

Ya wah, 3 yrs thats impossible. How many miles you clocked up. In winter you can destroy pads in weeks
HAnn - is it cos you never ride in the wet??
I am now a stone heavier (at half way)!
Scan tomorrow.
Still bike commuting to station and back - considering a little ride after swimming this evening - will decide on how i feel after swimming and report back :)
Hey you be careful now ratfink.
Keep us posted but just take it steady on that bike.
50 miles for me on a different route down to the charnwood forest, hard work heading in the wind going down but nice coming back. Oh and an hours run with badger before.
Yes hann get some wet riding done
[QUOTE=daz h;417898]Sorry, it wasn't... got those Mavic wheels in january 2009... so that is how long I have had the pads... I got the carbon dep section wheels summer 2009... and only use them for racing, which does sometimes take place in the wet. The Mavics get used in all weathers... I just don't brake very much I suppose LOL but I have to say that I didn't ride from the end of September till the beginning of February this year and that in winter I ride the track 3x a week and harldy ride the road at all IF I am not off injured...
Winter 2009 I spent running and training for Everest Marathon, so again, not on the bike from after Three Peaks til some time in February, as I got ill in Nepal...
I also ride a cyclocross bike in winter, which has had its brakeblock replaced very regularly!!!
On another note: I have recently started to pull my feet out of my Look Delta pedals...
I have done it three times now this week, in as many rides: once on the track, once in a TT (at the start) and once tonight, when sprinting for the village sign. Seems that whenever I use explosive power, I am pulling a foot out... I must have gotten stronger!
I have been told those Delta pedals are notorious for this so am now looking into buying nw pedals. Alas, I will need three sets, for track, road and TT bike... Any tips or hints or advice?
I think it is a toss up between Look Keo Blades and Shimano SPD-SL???
oop exercise induced mignight feasting :)
did 25 minutes v. steady swimming (I atually can't do any other kind) - then about 25-30 minutes riding up to Ringinglow from the swimming pool - which is about 4 miles up - not too far, uphill but not too steep - felt fantastic. My fitness confidence was really low because when I cycle up another hill from the staiton after work (with now i come to think of it work bag) I feel pretty tired compared to "normal" :)
Hann will you need new shoes for yor new pedals - if you are buying 3 lots will bike shop let you test drive some??
Any look keo pedals Hann.
The black cleats dont have any float
The grey cleats have a bit of float
The red cleats have a bit more float
In fact there are various options of floatyyyyyyness available at a wide range of prices
They do indeed therefore as cleats go provide everything that floats your boat.
Of course non of this information is any use if you dont regulary tighten the bolts up that hold your cleats onto your shoes.
That can be interesting sat at the side of the road fiddling with allen keys. Ah the joys of being a roadie.
Best cycling cafes?
Based in Saddleworth and looking to get out for a good 50-70 miles on a weekend- probably sunday.
I know Grindleford as its the dogs bollocks but where else in the peak/w.yorks
With regards to the track if you're doing more serious sprint work like 500m tts and track sprints you'll want double toe straps not clippless pedals. But that means a different pair of shoes too.
Ten years ago when I was doing a lot of track riding no serious sprinters were using clippless pedals but technology could've moved on (I suspect straps are still involved somewhere)...If I were you I'd smile sweetly at Legro and ask him what he thinks!!!
