This link should help you TT. The kit checks are stringent (I'm in charge of the changeover  ) so make sure you and your partner have everything required. Also, the location of the changeover is exposed to the prevailing wind with no shelter, so you will need to be able to keep warm while you wait.
Reports from club members last Sunday on a leg 4 recce is that it took them 2 hrs ploughing through deep snow. Lots of rain today and higher temperatures and more rain forecasted for the next few days should see a great improvement in the conditions underfoot. With just over 2 weeks to go only 2 weekends left for a leg recce. Take care out there still lots of icy patches.
great - I'll get us there - I've been there lots of times and I'll take my car up to meet you somewhere convenient - like ring road (I'm chapel allerton)
I usually go m62 then in to calder valley on a particular road - i think through elland - but i'll check it out and be in touch via pm
cheers ;-)
Not sure for definite about the recce because its a fair drive down for us. If i do come down it will be next Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Are any of those days OK for you. Can you get to Summit because we will be coming from the North.
It could be just me, me amd my partner or we might also have someone from our mixed team with us. I will get in touch if we are coming down.
Leg 3 reccie today; still some big patches of ice on the trails, had to take it very steady!
Has anyone recce'd Leg 2 yet? Looks like next weekend will be my only opportunity & I'm guessing after this weekend it'll be clear, there doesn't seem to be much about at all now.
After all this bad weather it may well be like raceday next weekend, evryone doing it last minute!
There is a chance of more snow in the area at the end of this week so that could mean we are back to square one with the conditions for any recce's and the race:(
Thanks for that, yea I've seen the weather & it's now looking a bit iffy later on in the week.
We're planning to recce Sunday too, but hell 2 & a quarter hours is a fair slog round, I was assuming with all the rain most of it would've gone.
Hey ho, still be fun
Most of the snow has now gone from most of the legs but some sections of some of the legs are still unrunnable and dangerous as the ice is taking its time to shift. If the ice doesnt go the event wont go ahead, it will be just to dangerous, we have to consider runners of all abilities. If its just a sprinkling of snow that might be ok. Still a couple of weeks to go yet but only one weekend left for a recce. Im more optimistic than I was a couple of weeks ago.
Good; 'cos you couldn't have sounded less optimistic!
Runners just need to slow down on ice; it's not an ability thing, it affects everybody. I reckon a reinforcing warning from the marshalls at the leg start wouldn't go amiss, it would be a shame to cancel the event for something so minor.
So Lefty should ignore the Safety Requirements for Fell Races document, and suffer the consequences, along with a potentially large number of injured competitors requiring help from marshals and MRT?
Disappointing if the relay has to be cancelled, but the safety requirements and obligations are there for a good reason.
Hmmm, don't want to get dragged in on this one (especially as the resident pedant seems to have shown up) but i cannot find anything specific in the Regs that says 'courses with a bit of ice on cannot be used'. The regs are deliberately vague;
Quote:
Should weather conditions on the hills be of such severity as to endanger competitors, or prevent marshals carrying out the race checking procedures efficiently, the race must either be abandoned or the bad weather alternative route used. The main factor in making such a judgement must be the safety of competitors and race organisers must be prepared to take firm decisions which may prove unpopular at the time.
I fully defend the right of organisers to cancel a race if it proves unrunnable, it happened to me last sunday and i understand why. To quote Lefty though;
Quote:
If the ice doesnt go the event wont go ahead
How much does it have to go? All of it?, Most of it? Some of it?
I stand by my comment; for someone who feels he is an optimist, i'd hate to meet him in a pessimistic mood!
The main area of concern at this time is a large of ice through Cragg Quarry on leg 5.At this time there is no way of avoiding it but hopefully with improving weather a safe path will appear.
Although AndyA will probably have little problem, the nature of this event attracts runners of varying ability's,some with not a lot of offroad experience.
On the old Rossendale Way relay race, a member of Horwich suffered a broken leg after slipping on ice ,'fortunately' near a main road crossing, not in the the back of beyond.........
Believe me the section that we have been talking about is unrunable to just about everyone at the moment. I have been running that section everyday for the last couple of weeks ( you can when you are retired) and I would not yet want to risk anyone running let alone racing it. I have been fell racing for 45 years and organising fell races for just about as long so I do have some experience in our sport. These type of events attract non fellrunning clubs and with that inexperienced people and we have to take that into account. (I get emails from people asking for advice on what type of shoes to wear ) If I have sounded pessimistic its probably because I have been anxious for the last couple of weeks, this type of event takes a lot more work to organise that a standard fell race which is a doddle in comparison and all of the work has been done already, if It had to be called off I would be devastated but I have to safety concious first and foremost, hope you understand that.
Lefty,
Just as a thought, if the only remaining icy section turns out to be the quarry, an alternative to cancellation would be to finish the race this year at Lobden (end leg 4).
Or could the quarry be cut out by coming down Rooley moor road?
A little bit more road.
Just seems such a shame with all the work that Lefty and his helpers have put into planning the event
Certainly I could " alter " the route if possible to avoid and dangerous bits although it could prove problematic it is something we could look at. I am still hoping that the troublesome sections will be ok come the day though and I am just about to don my trusty Walshies and get out there to do my daily check !
I see on the relay website it says the icy bits are improving day by day. Given that are you still going to make a descision on the 27th as to whether the race can go ahead or if its looking touch and go on the 27th might you leave it a couple of days to see if it improves further?
Looks like I'll be running this now.
Latest news on the race website is that the ice is no longer a problem and the race can go ahead:D Could be a busy weekend of reccying out there. Early start in the morning for us to recce leg 4
Blimey I only posted that notice on the event website a few minutes ago and its been seen already.......the power of the website !. Well yes as it says I had my daily trot out on the worst affected part of the route yesterday and in my opinion as race organiser its now safe to go ahead much to my relief !
The remaining patches of ice which may still go with a week to go can be avoided or safely negotiated.
Last chance for a recce this weekend so if you have never done your leg before get out there and have a look at it. It is still fairly well waymarked and if you were walking around with a map you wouldnt have a problem finding your way but you know what its like in a race, the signs can easily be missed.
Nice bit of ice all adds to the spice mix :)
I am checking leg 2 out on Sunday morning. Not sure of time yet but it will be early doors.
Leg 2 is a toughie...hardest leg of all, record set by Holmsey and Jebby in 2006 1.16.17 ! Ladies record also 2006 Joe Waity and Jo Smith from Calder Valley 1.32.04.......now thats a good time. Good luck
We did Leg 2 last year; horizontal snow in the face, all the way along the Gorple Track!
It's very exposed up at the start; i'd recommend making an arrangement with your Leg 1 runners so that you can have a thick jacket to wear, then handover to them when they turn up.
A pleasent recce of leg 4 for us this morning from Summit to the golf club and back. It all looks pretty straight forward. Looking forward to race day now
Thanks for the names update, must be a mistake on the first name which I can update, probably leave the other as she ran in her maiden name, still a hell of a time though which will take some beating as will the mens record.
Leg 4 is the easiest and lots of clubs put their speed merchants or younger runners on this leg. Its fairly easy to follow the route although care should be taken around the Wardle Reservoir area.
The changeover points can be a cold affair if you are stood around waiting for your incoming runners as its difficult to predict just when they will arrive. The first, third and fourth changeovers are all pretty exposed and are cold spots to be sure.
Three of us ran leg 2 this morning. Was an enjoyable route from what I could see in the fog. Very little snow to contend with but can imagine how much snow there was two weeks ago!
A very runnable route and fast in places. Nice downhill finish!!!!
Looking forward to the relay next Sunday now.
Seemed to be another group setting off just as I retruned to the top car park. Bet there have been lots of klast minute recce's this weekend.
Is the kit checked as we start each leg similar to the CWR?
