Thanks for that, yea I've seen the weather & it's now looking a bit iffy later on in the week.
We're planning to recce Sunday too, but hell 2 & a quarter hours is a fair slog round, I was assuming with all the rain most of it would've gone.

Most of the snow has now gone from most of the legs but some sections of some of the legs are still unrunnable and dangerous as the ice is taking its time to shift. If the ice doesnt go the event wont go ahead, it will be just to dangerous, we have to consider runners of all abilities. If its just a sprinkling of snow that might be ok. Still a couple of weeks to go yet but only one weekend left for a recce. Im more optimistic than I was a couple of weeks ago.
Yeah, could've done with studs but I reckon it will all have melted by the 31st. Might give us an even better chance of a decent result if those that haven't reccied cock it up on the daySame as last leg then.
Ran with Mapper this morning, Rooley Moor Road was like 'dancing on ice' fell twice so nothing new there

Runners just need to slow down on ice; it's not an ability thing, it affects everybody. I reckon a reinforcing warning from the marshalls at the leg start wouldn't go amiss, it would be a shame to cancel the event for something so minor.
So Lefty should ignore the Safety Requirements for Fell Races document, and suffer the consequences, along with a potentially large number of injured competitors requiring help from marshals and MRT?
Disappointing if the relay has to be cancelled, but the safety requirements and obligations are there for a good reason.
I was going to reply in a similar manner but this puts it so much better.
Hmmm, don't want to get dragged in on this one (especially as the resident pedant seems to have shown up) but i cannot find anything specific in the Regs that says 'courses with a bit of ice on cannot be used'. The regs are deliberately vague;
Should weather conditions on the hills be of such severity as to endanger competitors, or prevent marshals carrying out the race checking procedures efficiently, the race must either be abandoned or the bad weather alternative route used. The main factor in making such a judgement must be the safety of competitors and race organisers must be prepared to take firm decisions which may prove unpopular at the time.
I fully defend the right of organisers to cancel a race if it proves unrunnable, it happened to me last sunday and i understand why. To quote Lefty though;

I stand by my comment; for someone who feels he is an optimist, i'd hate to meet him in a pessimistic mood!
The main area of concern at this time is a large of ice through Cragg Quarry on leg 5.At this time there is no way of avoiding it but hopefully with improving weather a safe path will appear.
Although AndyA will probably have little problem, the nature of this event attracts runners of varying ability's,some with not a lot of offroad experience.
On the old Rossendale Way relay race, a member of Horwich suffered a broken leg after slipping on ice ,'fortunately' near a main road crossing, not in the the back of beyond.........
