Mrs Stagger and Tea and Cake went for a potter round the local off road routes.
Tea & Cake had her new Petzl Ultra, Mrs Stagger informed me thats it's a serious piece of kit for night time running.

Yes, it was a stupid amount of dosh (no lottery win for me either :() but worth every penny. I was a big girly wuss in the dark & would get spooked by everything, didn't even much like running on the dark lanes round us, forget the off road. Now i'm quite happy trogging off on my own, over the moors, through the woods. Its fantastic, has revolutionised my winter running :D
I will certainly be looking for the Ultra as i have a tikka and it's ok but it sounds like the ultra is a winner.

And for a very similar price to a Petzl Ultra, you could have a Hope Vision 4, with twice the light output! And crafted with love in Barnoldswick, to boot! As opposed to moulded on a plastics production line in Frog-land. That is how Hope get the full output from their LEDs, the machined aluminium housing acts as a heat sink, whereas Petzl go for a moulded plastic housing ( cheap & easy manufacturing ) that will not dissipate the heat, hence the LEDs have to be throttled back even on the highest setting.Quote:

just to say my silva LI is still working fine after years of use despite the bad comments from some on this site i still think its the best out there. and i have really give it stick and treated it rough and in terrible conditions and it has not let me down once.

Only run it up to about 300 Lumen with the small battery, put the 40g heavier one on and it will do 500+ Lumen.
On the comercial front Fenix have the HL10 (4AA) with 220 Lumen for reasonable money and are introducing twwo new models HL15 (2AA) and HL20 (1AA) which look interesting.
The best bang for the buck by far is the Magicshine quality can be a bit variable and it's more like 500-600 Lument not 900 but for the price it's a great deal.

I've been using mine for about a year now on the fells and wouldn't be without it. Variable beam length and colour (for map reading), light on the back to lead off the hills, central band etc etc. Probably sacfrifice a bit in weight but its negligible really...fifteen quid! :D
