went over leg 2 today,
parked at car park near withens clough res,
went up inside stoodley pike, great views.
it was not as boggy as i thought it would have been.
watch new fence stile near riding stables, nearlly hidden out of sight.
came back via centre vale/tod/kilnhurst/withins gate.
good 2 hours.
leg 4 next week.
last year I did leg 4, we set off from Blackshaw Head with three teams about 300m behind us we followed the Calderdale way to SD 9853 2779 just before Heptonstall and turned left following the 'Way' we went passed the church to the descent (as the hobble) but at the road crossing the other 3 teams joined us by taking a short cut down the road:confused: is this a reconised route?
I'm on this leg again and don't want to lose out.
This is very lazy....BUT....are there any maps anyone may have for Leg 3.:o

did you run through the church by way of the steps on the left?
as i understand it thats where the cw goes.
Not sure but we did go past the church following the signs but 300m was alot to catch up in a short time. (one of the groups we dropped tanother got away from us but it took another 5 miles for them to do that)
I think they cut up to the road at cross hill and ran down the road.
Is this a permitted short cut??
Ian,
I’m at work and without a map, so I can’t give you grid refs but;
Where you turn right into the woods before Heptonstall, if one were to keep going up the tarmac it would make up (at least) 300m I reckon. It is a cheat, but I believe some teams aren’t as honest as they should be. I few years ago I did Leg 4, and at this spot there was a couple out watching with their kids. As my partner and I turned into the woods the bloke shouted to us, asking if we were sure that we were following the correct route as ‘a few teams have carried on up the road’.
It’s only one of several places were cheating happens every year (and not the only place on Leg 4!). The organisers can’t police 50 miles so what can you do?
The other thing the teams following you may have done would be to go through the churchyard rather than alongside it, but this would only get you an advantage of maybe twenty seconds.
It looks like the start and finish have been moved to North Dean Woods (Grid Ref 080224) so by my reckoning that means the first leg is now just under 9 miles and the last leg about 11 miles
I agree it's cheating but iirc the gap into the woods is quite narrow and easily missed despite the CW sign (which I recall is also quite faded) - It's quite possible it may have been teams who hadn't fully reccied the route that continued along the road and thought nothing of it until they came to the next CW sign in Heptonstall (giving benefit of the doubt here!).
checked my map,
the cw DOES go through the church yard,
i will describe it better after the recce on sunday,
seem to remember the little steps rising into the church and it being very slippy.
shortcutting is cheating,end of.
another short cut taken by a local club was coming off the fell onto high house lane, the runners ignored the cw sign and went left/right down a path and made about 30 secs on a group of us,
we called them back, but were ignored.
we all reported them at finish,
the runners were defended by a team mate, saying it had not made them much time.
my argument was how many other short cuts had been made,
it being there own back yard!
it leaves a bitter taste and not in the nature of our sport.
This is a very deliberate shortcut. Since it was a point of controversy at the 2007 presentation, I stood here with camera last year to see what the leading teams did. About 8 of the first 12 teams took the shortcut, including the accusing team from the year before! (Credit to "local clubs" Todmorden and Calder Valley who took the correct route). Not wanting to marr the event, or some of the country's top athletes, I've kept the photos to myself.
Marshalling the entire route is impractical, but maybe if was made known that one or two marshalls would be randomly placed at places like this, it might keep people on their toes and remove the temptation of cheating. Most people stick to kit requirements because checks are carried out, so the same should hold true when it comes to being honest about the route.
I'm on Leg 6 for the first time.
Can anyone recommend what sort of footwear - is it too rough for a pure road shoe - or will a trail shoe be a better choice?
Ta
MH
its not rough, just sloppy in some places, the rest is good trails/track/road.
you will be glad of the grip on a couple of sections.
i have run it in a pair of nike pegasus and the grip was goos enough but it all depends on just how much rain we have.
OK this is a first for me and got leg 5. any advice please? thinking of going to recce it on Sunday
I ran leg 6 in trail shoes last year and was sliding all over the place on the sloppy first three miles. I'm going to wear Walshes this year.
Shoe choice for leg 6. Your Walshes won't last long on the roads towards the end of this stage. I wore Mizuno Wave Harriers last year: they provided enough grip everywhere except the descent down the field to the footbridge by the waterfall (132280).
OK this is a first for me and got leg 5. any advice please? thinking of going to recce it on Sunday
Today 04:30 PM
Leg5 can be tricky,
starts on sloppy fell,muddy fields/path,muddy climb,good grass
descent,tarmac climb,tricky following of way through yards/gardens/paths
with loose dogs, tracks to muddy fields, tarmac descent, cobbled big climb, muddy slippy track descent, muddy climb, fast track running,
muddy fields then about mile and half tarmac undulating finishing with a narrow ginnel to finish, you do not exchange a batton at finish.
hope that helps, you need to recce as its easy to get lost.
crikey, after printing maps etc i am doing leg 3 now so back to the bloomin drawing board. sorry to those that i agreed to recce leg 5 with on Sunday. now got to recce leg 3 on Sunday now
hee, hee, i'm glad other clubs do that to their runners as well!
I'm down for leg 6, am doing a group reccie on sunday but i don't doubt that it'll change on the day. I was down for this leg last year and ended up being swapped to Leg 2 with less than 24h notice. If that weren't bad enough, i was also promoted to the A-team:eek:
From what i remember of Leg 6, it's mostly good going but there are a couple of really sludgy bits near to field/stile corners. I'm wearing Mudclaws, but then they don't really bother me to run on tarmac in.
Thanks for the advice on Leg 6 guys - I think I'll go with worn down Mudclaws...
Unfortunately as we're coming over 200 miles to the event it means a recce on Saturday afternoon followed by the race on Sunday:eek:
At least I get a lie-in:)
MH
I'm doing a recce of leg 5 on Sunday. No doubt come race day I'll have been switched to another leg too !
More than last year? When I reccied leg 6 on the Saturday last year parts of it were under water (literally in the case of the footbridge just before Thornhill Beck Road at 152240). I'm doing leg 1 this year. Any comments on that leg?
Yes, you need to get up very early :D its my club xmas bash the night before so I don't know what state our leg 1 runners will be in !
Done leg 5 today, wet, muddy, boggy and very slippy. Never done it before only a couple of navigation errors. Enjoyed afternoon, can't wait to do it properly now!!
Yes Biara, it did get interesting when we were trying to read the route description in the dark!
Leg 1 for me as well. I thought it would be a case of follow my leader early on but my partner is a leg 1 veteran and he tells me they soon lost sight of everyone else last year.
Even though the start seems to have moved to North Dean Woods do we still register at Clay House Park?
The Halifax Harriers website says that registration and the start are at Clay House Park.
Map on the website is showing leg 1 starting from Clay House and going through North Dean Woods
Plenty of folk out doing leg 5 recce today. Muddy, boggy, slippy. At least the rain held off until we finished.
