I'm gonna be pedantic for a second if I may Stagger?
It's Allan Greenwood;)
Confusingly, Alan Greenwood organises the Hebden etc as in: http://www.alangreenwood.biz/
Anyways going back to WHC I'm sure Allan/Stringman will post any updates on here (like he did re:Ovenden) if not on his ogdenwater site.
Aww i hope there's a big thaw im bored of the snow now and i fancied a long run on Sunday. If the snows anything like it is up on Bull Hill it ll be a struggle, it was quicker to crawl through the drifts the other day. The LDWA event 2 crosses, goes up there on Sunday, should be fun for them
The White Holme Circular fell race is now CANCELLED.
Conditions have not improved sufficiently to run a safe race - I have to consider runners of all abilities.
The short course I had in mind, through deep powder snow, now has a shin wrecking frozen crust - no fun at all; and the Pennine Way is an ice rink.
Runners only want to run. There is no fun for runners in a non-runnable course.
I have made the decision now as the pub needs to know for catering etc.
This is my second race cancellation of the year and it's only two weeks in.
Sorry if you were looking forward to competing.
Allan G
Appreciate you letting us know in good time. Thanks as always for your efforts, Allan.
Looking forward to next year already!
Good shout Allan, safety first. Lots of people may be dissapointed but thats a minor consideration compared to a risk to life and limb.
Note for Allan Greenwood;
Allan, I contribute to the Telegraph & Argus Athletics column. In the hope of supporting the White Holme race we'd already mentioned it an article that gets published on Saturday and was submitted before the race cancellation. It does stress that anyone thinking of doing the race should visit your website or this FRA forum page before setting out, so I fervently hope that it doesn't cause any problems. Apparently once the wheels are in motion it's not possible to submit changes.
Just thought I should offer an explanation rather than you or someone else read the paper and wonder why the cancellation isn't mentioned directly in the article.
Hello folks,
Please support this race on Sunday if you can.
Full waterproof whole body cover MUST be carried / worn.
NO KIT - NO RUN.
After last Saturday's snowstorm thwarting my Ovenden race, keep an eye on this thread for any late updates/cancellations due to freak weather...
Cheers, Allan Greenwood

Thanks Rob (and Bryan)
Looks like the weather's going to be like 2 years ago... rain, gusty wind with just a hint of brightness at the end. Quite warm for the time of year though... Looking forward to those conduits!
It was a lot colder than it will be tomorrow; I do remember the mud and I was bl**dy frozen!
My lasting impression of this race was 1998 when i was still drunk from the night before.
I was slower than a week in jail. Catch up with you tomorrow Greg:p
I've also uploaded the pdf copy of the map that's a few posts down from the original map.
PDF Map
tis a great race, alas a wrecked calf precludes me again!!
See you shortly folks - have a good run. I'll be at the junction of the drain / PW. Don't mind gusty wind it's the rain I want to avoid.
Thanks to Allan and the other helpers today for putting the race on. The weather wasn't too bad down at the start/finish but up on the tops it was filthy - windy and rainy and a real slog to be honest. Well done Manhar - your marshalling position was exposed to say the least! I ran with a team mate taking it in turns to act as wind break but to be honest not sure he got much protection from my spindly frame. I'm just about warm now. Time for a pint, pie and a hot bath!
Thanks Allan for a cracking race. Was 9th before pulling my hamstring 4 miles in. In no time i must've been 29th. Managed to run through it and pick back about 15 places.
Knew i should have run in me 3/4 tights. Happy to finish, even if it was in pain
Looked a bit foggy and chilly. Foggy pics on Sportsunday (including Stanners).
Thanks for a cracking race Alan, and special thanks for organising proper fellrunning weather! Kirsten was chuffed with winning team prize and suitably embarrassed by people singing happy birthday!! :-)
Tough luck there Stanners. You're not the only one to suffer though, I think it's the fact it's flat and runnable and we're not used to that. I know several others were tightening up, last 3 miles my right hamstring and quad were bothering me.....can hardly walk now!!
I watched the agony of Stanners' hamstring ping, but by the end he was storming past an exhausted Zero (but still clutching his offending leg). Respect.
Great race and just the thing to baptise my wife's newly valeted car interior:o.
Thanks.
It should have been the assembled fellrunners, me included, who felt embarrassed. What a pathetic rendition of "Happy Birthday' it was! You'd have thought that at least we could have finished the song. Perhaps not everyone was secure with the words.
Thanks to Stringman, Bo Peep, and the forumite now known as Frosty Patel (who arrived 40 minutes early at his mercilessly exposed marshalling point and jogged up and down for over an hour trying to prevent the blood from freezing in his veins).
It looked like a good turnout. Anyone know how many took part this year? I forgot to check the results board.
James Logue did brilliantly to threaten the record in conditions that (with a touch of understatement) could be described as 'damp and breezy'.
Thanks for your kind words folks. Here are the first few results...

Thanks to all my helpers, Jackie and Kathrine on registration and results, Charmaine and Manhar marshalling (thanks Manhar, hope you have thawed out by now) and Bill "Studmarks" Smith who came on public transport from Liverpool to help us with results compilation.
NO KIT - NO RUN. Where have you read that before eh ?? On every advert for this race no doubt. I kit checked half a dozen on the start line and made it absolutely clear that it is a VERY EXPOSED route. - But we still had one runner who went without full waterproofs and ended up coming a cropper and forced us to send out a rescue vehicle.
Let's hope a valuable lesson is learned.
Cheers everyone, see you again soon. Allan G

I notice there is to be a new route for 2012 -has anyone any idea of what the new route is?
new route????
It seems to have lost 4 miles or 6.4km which ever way you want it, am certain that it was about 12miles, now only 8ish....
Maybe someone moved the hill closer to the start???
The climb and descent will not go nearby the White House pub. Instead it is the path marked on the map running across Chelburn Moor, meeting the Pennine Way near Uttley Edge. That accounts for the route being shortened by four miles.
Very soon after the start you turn off up a rough track which takes you over a stone bridge. There are yellow posts in the ground marking the path over the moor.
What a sensible reason for the race being less than previously!! Much prefer the idea that someone had stolen 2 miles of land, moved it out in the dead of night so suddenly the race was smaller. Or maybe instead of running around the water at the top, you had to swim across it, hence the need for full kit, when it says it is mandatory maybe there was going to be a surprise and the mandatory kit was in actual fact a wetsuit or a canoe!!
Ho hum, I'll keep on dreaming.....:D
Anyone doing a recci of this new route will find that it is advantageous to STAY close to the yellow topped posts RIGHT TO THE VERY TOP-MOST ONE on both the outward AND return routes. They are there for a reason - to guide you along the trod over what is a really rough patch of moor. To cut a corner from the Pennine Way to join the trod (on the return route) would probably be much slower over such rough tussocky ground, with a risk of possible injury.
You have been warned!
Visit the 2012 fixture list and note the rider... "New route for 2012. MUST bring full waterproof whole body cover. NO KIT - NO RUN".
Map HERE... http://www.flickr.com/photos/ainley-...in/photostream
Lastly, following last years event;
Read the report @ post 589 on here.
Link HERE http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/showt...ar-race/page59
No windproof - one very distressed runner - one rescue vehicle dispatched - one worried organiser - I do not need this hassle.
Please just bring the kit.
See you there, Allan G
