Just wondering how much this race differs from the Coniston Country Fair Fell Race in July, i believe that ones a shorter distance, but is it over roughly the same course. I was maybe going to have a go at it.
Anyone having a go at this at the weekend? What's it like?
I'll be there. Have never ran the route before though. If you haven't already seen it, race info here: http://www.conistonfellrace.org.uk/
I found it all pretty straight forward when i did it apart from getting the right line for the descent off Coniston Old Man
looks like i will be there now
Great race - good cakes at the start - long clib up Wetherlam and then rocky ridge to Swirl How and then runnable ridge to old man - downhill options are - follow a local - take a direct line and look out for some 10 ft drops - or chicken out and take the tourist track down.
The general idea is to take the fastest line to the bridge about 1k from the finish. Never managed a good line yet!
Went up Old Man twice yesterday afternoon. First time took a bad line, second time was much better. Not that I'll get it right on the day.
When i did it i think everyone took a direct line. I cant remember anyone using the tourist route
This must be the luscious green cutting the zigzags which I ve heard tell of
Indeed it is! Which is one of the reasons I think Coniston is a cracking race.
I'l probably decide depending who I'm trailing, how I'm feeling etc.
I was thinking it will take me about 2 hours, anyone else as slow as that, or is that being optimistic for a novice mountain runner?
I'll be at the back so I'll just follow everyone else and if I see anyone fall down a 10 foot drop, I'll know to change course :)
Mudlugger, I would expect to do this in 1:45 - 2 hours, so I'll be somewhere near you.
The weather forecast for tomorrow is for some rain and for it to be pretty windy on the tops. Anyone know if the organisers are concerned about the wind point ? I ask as driving up from London ! Cheers.
Its 8.51pm and its blue skies ans windless on Coniston but.....................................
..........but at that time it's probably dark so don't try a direct route off the top until tomorrow.
Great weather, great race, and only a kilometre from home. All I need now if a great performance!
Anyone know whether the ambulance was for a fell runner?
if = is
Fantastic weather, and home in time for tea. What a classic race, ~I cant wait to do more races in the lakes this year.
Good to see some familiar faces too.
I managed 1:48 exactly, well chuffed as I thought I would have been closer to 2hrs. Loved the decents off coniston, managed a fairly straight line: 20 mins from top to bottom. Wahoo!!
any results?
It was for me.
Managed to land awkwardly and have broken the lower part of my fibula. Off to hospital any minute to have it plated.
Bugger. Probably not doing the Old Counties any more!!!!!
PS Many thanks to the Steel family from NFR who looked after me 'til Fell Rescue arrived.......what a brilliant job they do. Donation will be in the post once I get sorted.
