Presume it's still on? Anyone know what conditions are like around there? Lots of ice on the Wolds anyway.
Theres still quite a bit of snow up on Ayton moor all runnable though. The lower you are the more slushy it gets so the path up from the railway bridge to the bottom of green bank will be pretty mucky and the drop down to the cottages will be slippy. Id wear full fell shoes - you'll probably need them for the last section through the fields as well. Tread carefully on the stone steps from the monument as under the snow is still a lot of ice which could potentially be bad but that might have gone by Saturday.
Just been re-reading the posts on this thread. Cross country - mud and fields. Trail - cart paths. Fell - big hills. NEHRA winter and summer series - fell. Not as challenging as the lakes in the sense of height but challenging in different way - reading the weather, and the landscape, and the quirks of the moors. As fell territory the NYMs shouldnt be taken lightly I think - they can be deceptive and catastrophic for anyone who isn't properly prepared.
Enjoy the race!
The race is going ahead as it stands , there has been no discussion of cancellation within the club:).
Recce'd the whole route this afternoon, conditions are variable, clear, slush, ice and snow. I would advise fell shoes if you have them available.
The icy bits are on the ascent once past the railway bridge and upto the woods, the snow is up top and on the descent, still up to 12 inches deep where it has drifted.
Take it steady if it its a cold New Years Eve!
Antisocial Antisocial Antisocial
So good to hear from you, the Captain Cook's race thread wouldn't be the same without you:rolleyes:!
Happy New Year!
Best Wishes
Cant wait, one of the best races anywhere :-)
This was an awesome race today..loved it and I don't mind telling you all! I fairly flew down the hill only to be met with a sneaky uphill at the bottom of it..buggar!
but the beat goes on - name the group who recorded this live album (a clue it was released after they split up and was of their final gig at the time)
Always happy to help those living in wannabe fell race areas:wink: perhaps you can ask for hills for xmas next year:D
No doubt we will discuss this again next december - Happy new year
Anyone going along? I will be there, cant run pain free but with some tablets inside should be alright :p
As ever looking forward to this one:D, i not sure you ever run absolutely pain free in fell running:closed:.
Its forecast another mild day, so turnout could be large again.

Aye Stolly, I almost mentioned the beard when we were chatting, just in case you hadn't noticed it ;-)
Results are here and they misread my daughter Kelly's number and gave her position to an interloper. Kelly ran brilliantly and came in 136th with race number 1939 but unfortunately they took her number down as 1999 and Jen Milsom came 136th instead. Never mind, its character building :)
There were a few difficulties in some of the results, i'll pass on, an amended result sheet will come out in the nearish future.
Cracking event though:D.
I know its a few weeks away, but is anyone doing it this year? I was meant to do it last year, but sherrys took over. Instead I had to watch my friend set off and return very muddy, whilst drinking coffee and eating a bacon sandwich. I will not be making the same mistake this year! Am I right in thinking that gate near the end only gets opened that 1 day a year?
Yes the gate is normally closed, but if you are wanting to do a recce there is a small kissing gate on the footpath about 100 meters down the road.
I hope to be there on the day
I'm from GA so know the route pretty well, though I prefer to run round roseberry and across to captain cook across the moors than through the farm. Should be good though!
There are plenty of fell race routes that do take in Roseberry, Captain Cook's Monument and other parts of the North Yorkshire Moors, check out the Esk Valley Fell Club Website.
The Captain Cook's race is a multi-terrain race really, good enjoyable diversion for New Years Day and great to have a chat in the pub after, you didn't have too bad a deal last year Daleyboy1234 in terms of Bacon Sandwiches and Coffee, i recall it was freezing on the tops with the icy drizzle, though i always enjoy the race.
This is a perfect race in that its over the xmas period so I'm home, the roseberry topping one was midweek so couldn't and my friend forgot her fell gear for the three tops. I walked up through the cut to cheer my friend on last year and remember it was extremely bitter. It was fun cheering people on though and I got a Suggitts after!
Can't wait for this one. Missed it this year due to injury, in fact only managed two races all year. Will arrive at the start line with a smile on my face that I will hopefully carry into lots of races in 2013. A great little race with a lovely social atmosphere.
hoping to be there, minus the man flu ive been carrying for a week now
What are shoe recommendations? Fair bit of road/trail, so trail shoes? Or mudfest, so fell?
Looking forward to it!
Did you do Guisborough Woods Rev?
Brilliant today, a great way to start the year off, sunny, mud glorious mud, good turnout, and a nice pint in the oak after to round things off for the day and start things up for the year,
Its was a terrific morning in Great Ayton, 250+ in the senior race and nigh on 20 juniors, plenty of support around the course and great to see faces old and new.
Photographs courtesy of Dave Aspin and Rob Pollard are up on the Esk Valley website link.
For the record. Jim Bulman (New Marske Harriers), made it a festive double after his win at Guisborough, Paul Lowe (NYMAC) second from Cameron Taylor (Esk Valley), Paul Butler (Loftus and Whitby) and Ian McGrath (Durham FR).
Cath Williamson (Loftus and Whitby) was first in the ladies race.
Next up Clay Bank East 06/01/13.
Great start to the new year, and some SUN for a change.
The icy roads were probably the trickiest bit; I loved the fast descent off the top, then left down the track, really let myself go.
Any idea when full results are likely to be out?
