Always wondered whether anyone went that way, may have to try it next year!:)

I went that way one year with Deejay. It felt a bit naughty when everybody else was going the other way.
It was pretty good underfoot and I quite enjoyed the novelty, but I think that although it encouraged a faster pace, the extra distance more than cancelled out that advantage and it ended up being slightly slower. Not much in it, though.
I tried that way a few years ago and bottled out (hadn't reccied it) so ran back up the track to follow the route I knew. Thanks for the advice Tussockface. I won't be left forever wondering (not to mention wandering) now.
Thanks All! I might have to recce both ways this Sunday and find out for sure, instinct (and looking at peoples GPS traces :-D ) leads me to believe that Jez has outlined the fastest route..
It is interesting watching the split at Keighley Gate Dan. The "lefties", the "righties" & the rebels who go down Keighley Gate, then cut across ! What time are you hoping for, sub 3 ?
Hoping for 3 hours yeah, are you entered Jez?
I'm running Rombalds for the first time this year and was wondering what you elite lot will be wearing on your feet? I'm using it as training for my BG attempt later on in the year so I won't be going fast. I have inov8 mudclaws and flyroc's. With the boggyness I'm thinking about my mudclaws. Any suggestions? Thanks Wooj
Thanks fellas. Ill pop my flyroc's on. I tried a pair of x talons on in the shop and they were too narrow for me 😞. I could do with a light pair of shoes.
Evening all,
Debut attempt for me next week - bit sketchy on Ilkley Moor but I'm hoping, depending on conditions I may be able to follow someone! My major concern is West Chevin Forest - can anyone give me any tips on the correct direction?
Lets hope we get some freezing weather this week, its an absolute bog bath on the moors!
Richard, worth a review of the thread to get a handle on the trickier sections covered previously such as the conduit crossing on Ilkley moor and the cheeky ginnel in Menston.
When you get almost to the bottom of West Chevin Road there's a brown sign at the bottom of the hill, head straight up the hill (don't miss the self-clip) then bear right slightly until you get to the steps. When up the steps head 'up-left' roughly on the diagonal until you reach the path then bung a right down to the check-point.
Think that's right? Hope that's useful?!
Looks like pretty much non-stop rain today and tonight on the route easing off but with a stiff wind expected tomorrow. Should be a very muddy, tough un.
Going was very heavy between keighly gate and pipers gate last weekend, made worse by having constantly wet feet with severe windchill. That section and the climb to 12 apostles will be the worst.
Weather could have been worse I think, especially after the downpours we had yesterday. Started clouding over around midday and I felt a few drops of rain as I was trying to climb up the side of the Chevin.
I wore an old pair of Mudclaws in deference to the conditions and was skating around a bit on the Ilkley Moor slabs .... in fact I saw a small pool of blood up near where Dave Woodhead was taking photos. I hope nobody was seriously injured ....
Someone fell coming off Baildon Moor and the blood at Lanshaw Lad is from a lady who fell on the flagstones and gashed her knee. I did a spectacular tumble on the flags as well, but managed to land on the soft ground next to the path...and before I reached Dave Woodhead and his camera!
Must have been a day for it, I took a fall as well and it could have been disastrous; must have looked comical but 'broken neck' flashed through my mind briefly.
Climbed over the wall just before the slog to buck stones and part of the wall gave way, went head first, raked my legs down the barbed wire, landed on my windpipe somehow AND a large stone fell off the wall onto my ankle. My own fault for rushing and not looking for a safe place to get on the left hand side (and not properly recceing this section!).
Hobbled on for 200m then decided to head back to Whetstone gate to retire, however on getting there ankle had numbed up and I (stupidly?) decided to man up and get back on with it and finished in a reasonable 3:26, only about 30seconds slower than last year. Annoyed with myself as I was going really well but more so for wrecking the wall. Lesson learned.
Now nursing cut legs, bruised throat and a satsuma size swelling on my ankle.
Anyway, great marshall's and pie as expected and credit to the guy who twice made sure I was OK. Another well organised day.
Turned out to be a cracking morning for it, views right up upper wharfedale from pipers gate were some of the clearest I've seen to a snow capped buck den pike and gt. whernside, that was the only glimpse I got of a view I think. Bonked on the chevin (don't we all??!) for a 3:02
Well done Dan, glad you enjoyed it. Bet there's not too many who have done a time like that on their first attempt at the race.
2 sets of Rombalds Stride pictures up very soon on http://www.woodentops.org.uk/
I can now confirm that the left of the wall is quicker. I was running with Dan and Will at whetstone gate and left ahead of them to do the cowpers cross route. They took the top line and came out about 50m ahead of me at buck stones.
I had a good run, started to flag a little up the chevin but ate something and was fine by the top. Finished 2:58 which I'm very happy with :)
What were the pies like? Do you still get a mug as a momento?
Well done Rob, was good to meet you yesterday. Someone mentioned to me over pie, a different route to the right of the wall which they said was faster than both the left route and the cowpers cross route. I'll do a recce and post my findings.
Happy with my time of 3:00:45, would have been nice to get under 3 but still a big PB. There's always next year!
I completed Rombalds yesterday too. My first race ever!! I came in at 4hr13min. A woman in front of me took a bad fall coming down to burley wood head. I stopped and helped her and made sure she was ok before carrying on. She can't of been hurt that bad cos she caught me up and passed me (or maybe she was just hard as nails). I could keep up with her lol.
A great day 😄😄.
Sorry to disappoint you, no it wasn't. Although you may be forgiven for thinking so when you read some of the comments about LDWA events these days.
The Rombalds Stride is an LDWA Challenge Event in which walkers and runners are invited to complete a 23 mile route in anything up to 10 hours. It's not a race. If you complete in under 3 hours, you complete the challenge, if you complete in 9hrs 59mins, you complete the challenge (and, in fact, some would say you deserve far more respect for having been out that long).
Good luck with your first race when you go to one though, glad you enjoyed yourself at Rombalds.
