Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
If you really have a complaint about the FRA, please address it to me directly. My contact details are readily available from the magazine, website, handbook etc.
The forum is a good place for airing opinions - and everybody is free to do that, members, non-members, committee members, grumps - they are all entitled to their own opinions.
The forum is a public place, however, and it is possible that readers of the forum may not be receiving the full facts - or even facts - so I tend not to consider anything on here official. So, if you've something to say, and you really want me to hear it, let me have it by post, email or phone.
Yours in sport,
Alan Brentnall

An accurate remark in the saga of events don't you think?

Actually you weren't Graham - at least that's not how I interpret what you said. I did find your postings quite aloof.
Alluding that certain forumites were dim, uncontrollable fellrunners, and post 774 further emphasises that you are of the opinion that the majority of posters on this topic are dim and ill informed.
Following the Sportsunday post it seems it is not quite as cut and dry as you were making it out to be - ie. UU, Tenant framers, the Grump etc are all good, the plebes are all dim.

Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
On a positive note, I see that the PBR interactive map shows the location of the two most 'sensitive' gates, and emphasises the need to comply with PBR rule 19.

Interesting that there's two rule 19's  It always surprises me that this has to be stated over and over again though, when you open a gate you close it afterwards, simples.
Interesting to see that gps as a navigational aid are not allowed (fair enough), but you are allowed to carry or wear such devices to record your run. How on earth that could be successfully policed I have no idea

I think that the problem could be one team opens a gate but doesnt close it because there is another team approaching. If they then leave it open for another team following them, the third team might not realise that the gate needs closing if they were out of sight when the first team went through.
Then again there might be some ignorant bastards who think 'f**k it closing the gate will cost us a few seconds' but you would hope these are few and far between
-
Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
Ultimately everyone just has to shut gates, except where it is not feasible as the runners behind are already at the gate and we have to accept that it is not ignorant when someone in front of us closes the gate on us.
-
Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
On the first leg of Calderdale 2 years ago the team about 50 yards in front of us opened a gate and it fell off its hinges, just in case it happens agian what is the correct procedure to follow in this situation
-
Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
Can I remind runners about Rule 14:
"This is a bridleway and you may encounter horses and cycles on the route. Please slow down and give way and take extra special care around horses. Please show care and respect for other users."
As a check point marshal on this event, I have had to deal with two incidents, where runners have passed horses without slowing. On the first occasion the horse bolted, very fortunately without throwing the rider, who nevertheless was very badly shaken. On the second the rider maintained control but quite rightly complained about lack of consideration.

I think the rules require at least one team member to have carpentry skills

Personally Jim, I always do, but it would be nice if the riders, cyclists or walkers reciprocated. I find the "rambler" types particularly ignorant sometimes - not necessarily in races.

Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
I think i'ts a good move by the R.O. to say the mixed teams now have to be man+lady on each leg......make team captains think about selection a bit more. See Accy have entered four mixed teams.

Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
Any volunteers to marshall the remote gate at the top of the Gorple Road
( i have had to give an undertaking to UU that we will marshall this and one other gate) Thanks
-
Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
Only 1 rule 19 now...corrected, thanks for pointing out this very serious matter. Cant police the gps thingy....must have got a dozen emails from people last year who obviously had never done a fell race but owned a smartphone with a map on it !

I'll volunteer to help if i can. I know we talked about this today, over at Halifax, but thought I'd get the ball rolling on this forum as well.
I probably can't help with this gate though; i seemed to get lumbered with running leg 2 and even if i don't then the logistics of racing a leg and marshalling that gate (probably for several hours) are too difficult to resolve. Provided i get on a later leg (e.g Leg 3 onwards) then i can certainly help out at the start or on Leg 1.
I'll be in touch either way.
-
Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
Andy. Thanks for your offer of help. If you are running a leg it's difficult to help out as the logistics tie you up for quite a bit more than just running. Maybe someone else will step up to offer to Marshall the 'problem' gates.
Good to meet you this weekend on the Fmr coaching course.
Event full up with 110 teams !

Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
Seen a few teams out on leg recce's although after Christmas seems to be when the clubs get out on their Sunday morning course checking forays. The host club are doing leg recce's most Sunday mornings. If anyone is interested in coming along the contact details are on the event website. www.penninebridlewayrelay.co.uk

Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
With the ridiculous moving of the CWR realistically taking the shine of the evnt is it time for the PBR to step up and become the best off road relay in the calender?

I didnt think it was ever a contest, Pennine has always been a far bettter relay than the CVR !!!!! leg 4 on CVR is pretty good, but thats the only leg i'd take across, infact i enjoy Bradford more than CVR, but Pennine every time ;)

Agreed I just meant in terms of prestige and popularity
-
Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
With the more relaxed mass start times the PBR is at least a relay whereas CWR turns into a series of mass starts
-
Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
The mini mass starts at the 2 last changeovers are only there to ensure that everyone finishes in daylight and so far it's worked out ok. We find that there are usually only a few teams who are set off before their handover. We do though have informal cut off times at the other changeovers if incoming teams are overdue. This ensures that the outgoing teams are not left hanging around and getting cold. We issue them with a new dibber timer chip and send them on their way.The Sportident timing system makes all of this easy and I hate to think of the problems we would have if we had to do the timing longhand. Last year we used a system whereby the times from each changeover are sent back to base by SMS which gives instant results. 112 teams entered now ! Close the gates !
-
Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
Just one or two stragglers still to enter. We have just about let everyone in who wanted to. Any teams on the 'Waiting list' have been let in. We will be assigning team numbers this weekend so have a look on the event website soon to see what your team number is. If you are unsure please speak to your team captain or the person who entered your team. With multiple teams entered from some clubs it can be confusing. We want to make sure that you collect your correct number at the start of your leg.

Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
Check out the event website as we have now assigned numbers to the teams. It's important that everyone knows their team number in order that they collect the correct number at the start of each leg. It can be confusing when clubs have multiple teams entered. www.penninebridlewayrelay.co.uk

Some parking secured ( at a cost) at Callis Bridge, could still be a bit tight. Car share if possible, spectators please avoid the changeovers. It's looking good though !

Re: Pennine Bridleway Relay
Just this week had a letter from the Fra sent out to all relay organisers reminding us of our responsibilities regarding kit and kit checks. We treat our kit checking seriously everyone's kit is checked at the start of their leg, hope everyone knows the rules. We get lots of non regular fell runners which worries me a bit. Check out the website.

I'm doing a recce for leg 5 on Thursday 26th, 10.30 at the leg start. All welcome, I've not done it before so don't blame me if we get lost!Pace will be steady, to suit the slowest runner; there's no point doing a recce with your head down and your tongue hanging out.
