The Rombalds is not and never has been organised by the LDWA. You can walk it if you want but there is plenty of racing going on and a table full of trophies for the fastest in various categories.

Put some runners together on the moors & it will soon become a "race" !
Well done Wooj on completing your first "fell race" !!
Untill Rombalds I have exclusively run on my own up on the tops away from crowds and people. This was the first time where I had to register, have a number, clock checkpoints and compete against others. It may not be an official FRA race but to me it was a "fell race". Any way the point is I loved it and I was impressed with what you got for the entrance fee and the all round nature of it. Thanks Jez, I hope to do more 😄.
There certainly seemed to be plenty of racing going on, there were published "winners". So if it looks like a duck and quacks, it's probably a duck...

LDWA-advertised under "challenge events". If it looks like a duck....... :D
Definition of race from Google:
noun
- 1.
a competition between runners, horses, vehicles, etc. to see which is the fastest in covering a set course.
Excellent, sounds like you had a cracking day. That's the beauty of LDWA events and why they should be protected, at all costs, from the "racing" mentality. What you get for the fee is astonishing and, as you say, the all round nature of it is so special....precisely because it's not a race but a challenge for people of all abilities. You meet such wonderful people, who inspire you and show you that you need not reduce your distances as you get older, just adjust your speed!
Clearly marked as "Non LDWA" in the events list at http://www.ldwa.org.uk/challenge_events/events_list.php (change the from date if needed).
It's a hybrid event like the Calderdale Hike or the Osmotherley Phoenix. You will find those in the LDWA events list (as "Non LDWA") but they have also featured in the Runfurther series.
All getting a bit pedantic about the semantics. Call it what you like, but there's no doubt people partake in it to race rather than just the challenge. I was certainly 'racing', even if just to try to better previous efforts, and certainly at times pushed harder to pass people. Felt like racing to me but different for different people I suppose; life is colourful not black and white.
Congratulations to Rombald who was fastest over the 'challenge'... We all tried in vain to beat him!
If it's not a race then why have results in order of finishing times and prizes for the winners? Just because an event isn't advertised as a 'race' doesn't mean that the people in that event aren't racing each other.
It's great that the event has a 10 hour limit though to cater for everyone. Thanks to all the volunteers who were willing to give up so much time.
Yes I've come back on after a long absence from the site. Agree with you Rob. I took the north trail marked by the cross and lost a couple of places to those who went left of the wall. That's that one sorted. What about going up the stairs instead of doing the rocky valley?
Could have told you LHS of wall was definitely quicker from reccies (and from looking at a map....)! ;)
Definitely quicker to go along Rocky Valley than up stairs. I've reccied that section a lot and always used RV on all three attempts. It's where people go at the end of RV that's still up for debate, but, for me, I've also nailed that section with what I think is the fastest route.
Bit sad to miss yesterday, but never mind, there's always next year. Placed 6th on the men's open course at the Northern Night O Champs in Middleton Woods in the evening instead, so I'll take that.
I take the RHS of the wall after the Whetstone Gate road, after 40 metres or so I break right and stick to the green stuff avoiding the heather. This leads to the path towards the East Buck Stones, I take that path for 20 metres or so then break right before the East Buck Stones to head across to the start of the flag stones by the wood. It cuts the corner off and I gained a few places and some time against those people who run faster than I can! Worth a reccie, because you need to know where the bogs are.
For Rocky Valley I took a punt this year and went up the steps and over the top (I had checked this on the map, but not reccied). This is a bit shorter than going through RV and climbing right at the end of RV), but involves maybe 10 metres of extra climbing. I found it better because of less "rock-hopping" than in RV, so seemed less draining, but no quicker.
Nice to meet you too, finishing a paltry amount over 3hrs is known in Horsforth Harriers patois as "doing a Raby" after one erstwhile club mate who completed London in 3hrs 6seconds! At least your certificate will say 3hrs though :)
For the record, I race it too as do most fell runners I know (although not all). Although for me the challenge is the time more than the position. There's no need to split hairs, it is what it is. We all get out of it what we want.
Them Adidas didn't slow you down much then? What was your finish time?
On a map it looks straightforward but the ground is saturated at the top whereas the cowpers cross route is a decent fast path. Although clearly not fast enough!
This was a heavily photographed event, what with SportSunday, the Woodentops and you, Jez (I'll see if I can find yours on fb when I get home). I took some as well as I bimbled my way round:

I hope the girl who cut her knee is alright. She retired at the Whetstone Gate CP as I was taking shelter to put my gloves on. Those flagstones are lethal. They have caused injuries every year since they appeared, with trips and slips. I go so carefully along them they provide a long breather opportunity in readiness for hitting it hard again along the LHS of the wall.
One of my club mates gashed his leg quite badly (well it looked bad) on those slabs. One day someone will need the air ambulance up there, even in relatively decent weather they're lethal. Only a matter of time before someone splits their head open.
I run alongside mostly but some bits (at least on Rombalds) you sort of have no choice. I used to love the unpredictable bog track that was there before. One day I'll recce it properly and find a better route out through the heather.

Results :-)
Jez - I will do, maybe springtime or early summer
Hope she's okay, the fall did look pretty bad. You guys had fluorescent green on I think. I was in an orange windtop. You both went past me going through the fields just before Menston. I was going through a mental battle at that point. When I recovered I just didn't have the juice to speed up 😞. I was impressed with some of the strong female runners. Got passed by a few going up the chevin. I was slipping about like Bambi on ice! Looking forward to next year already.
Hello chaps and chapesses :)
I've sadly missed out on getting an entry for this. :(
If any one can't do it, and it's allowed to Transfer, I'd be grateful of paying for your entry. Or maybe 2 places!
I did it two years ago so hoping that the (lack of!) navigation may still be partly lurking in my brain and can help me try and improve on 11th place this time.
Cheers, Tony (TC)
Has the course changed any from 2013?
I'm still after an entry or two if anyone can help ta :-)
TC, I guessing you've probably already thought of it but I suppose no harm in mentioning it; might be worth emailing the organiser and letting him know you'd appreciate a spot if there are any withdrawals. A few good sort in the past have been kind enough to do so for this event when they've had to pull out.
Oh and no, I don't think there's been any change, route description looks the same to me. Good luck!
That's good advice. Also, at the Hebden a couple of week's back there was a large amount of no-shows and I ran with a couple of guys who'd just turned up, banking on this happening .... admittedly the weather overnight had been terrible and I suppose the snow stopped people getting there.
Of course, you couldn't guarantee a place, but if you're desperate and it's not too far to travel, well, it might be worth the risk?
Almost certain the route hasn't changed.
Ta chaps. Organiser said defo NOT to turn up on day tho. Need to do any changes in advance, and I'm not so local either.
Tony (Toyota Crown), I'm injured and out of it for this year. Can you PM me about a transfer please?
