Great video guys, you have really stepped it up.
I guess Kev in his skin colour undercrackers did not make the final cut. Is it on the directors commentary or extras
Excellent video - well done!!:D :D
Nice to meet you too!!
Great day out - fab race - loved it!! 'Big Up' to NOYH for the bon bons and dates - got me up wetherlam a treat those J - cheers hun!!:D
A smashing turn out - weather stayed reasonable although slightly dicey round Swirl How given there was very little to see bar the hand in front of your face!
Lovely sarnies at the end too - thanks to all involved!:D
God - I'm aching today!
What a fantastic race - classic route, good atmosphere and a nice pub at the end. Tasty tuna buttie too. Thanks to Ambleside AC and everyone else who helped out. Reckon I'll be back next year for the 25th.
It was a bit misty wasn't it. I think that's the first time I've ever had my map & compass out of the bumbag on a fellrace. Weather not as bad as today though, my missus just ran the langdale half and it absolutely hammered it down.
Any sign of results.
Did anyone measure saturdays race on a GPS?
I have put the route into memory map and it comes out at roughly 10miles 5100ft of climb.
The handbook says 13miles and 4000ft of climb. Have carried out a complete cockup in my plotting?
Anyone know where the results will appear. Thanks.
should appear here

I dropped 'em an email with a link to the video and asked when the results would be up but got no reply.
no news is good news:confused: maybe.......................hopefully:o
I can't keep asking cos Brett'll tell me off!!:o
:o ahemmm - sorry been very busy, but results only came in today & they are now up @ http://www.amblesideac.org.uk/3shires_2007.htm
Good to meet so many folk at the race - bit cold up on Lingmoor but quite enjoyed watching for a change!
Britta
Good to meet you Britta,
Even the dogs gave me a bark as I passed on the way up Lingmoor
Oh god,the embarrassment I was nearly last !!:o Fortunately my name is mis-spelt in the results so people will not know its me !!:D
By the way,my friend lent me his 1997 video of this race, won in record times, which still stand today,by Gavin Bland and Marie Todd. I know Gavin is still on the scene but what is Marie doing nowadays ??
I was so impressed by her strong running style when I watched the video and also being interviewed afterwards she was a lovely, delightful girl too.
I think she was running for Borrowdale ?
Marie Todd ran for Ambleside
[I]Re: where is Mari now?
busy living north of inverness, organising toddlers, Munlochy school council and trying to fit in a bit of training. Can't recall the climbs being steep in the 3 shires, but my Dad just reminded me of the shoe eating bogs on the descent to Blea Tarn where I lost a shoe in 1997. I remember the descent bfore Pike o' Blisco was steep....bet Jackie passed a few going down that.
Having completed Kentmere I’m keen to maybe have a go at Three Shires in Sept. Just wandering how much of a step up is the Three Shires and if I did Kentmere in 2.5hrs will I be struggling to meet the cut off at 3 shires stone after 2 hrs
Many thanks
if you did 2 and a half hours at kentmere you wont have a problem, just go for it :D,see you there
My favourite race (probably as it was my first fell race) but can't do it this year :(
just save a bit in your legs for the last climb up Lingmoor
Best of luck with this one Novice, I'll be doing it myself, no idea what sort of time I'll do it in maybe around 2:30 ish I would guess.
You should have no problems meeting the 2 hr cut off, it's no more than 6 mile into the race so you should be well past there by two hours.
Hi again novice, I've never mastered 3 Shires because the 1st climb is a killer and has always caused me pain in my lower back. Never known anything quite like it and I've done the Ben race 4 times! After that there's not that much more to it but I'd say it's considerably harder than Kentmere just because of that opening climb. All the Lakeland Classics are.
Mindyou, someone said to me he thought Sedbergh Hills was a harder race than 3 Shires because it's longer and has more climbing. To me it's not because it's more runnable so it can depend who you talk to, horses for courses. Re cut offs I don't know sorry.
Parking fields are flooded, keep an eye on http://www.amblesideac.org.uk/news.htm for updates
Selwyn always said "If you can get to the race then the race is on".
I'll be there alright, it's one of my favourites, so lets hope he's right and the weather doesn't scupper it for us all.
Oh, and not forgetting ".......and the sun always shines for the 3 Shires".
Not done a long race before, only managed Hutton roof and Lingmell dash, also I'm not confident navigating in the mist so not sure if I'm doing this race or not yet. If the weather is ok I'm up for it. I'm going up for the weekend anyway as my mate is doing the race also so I'll decide on the day.
We did the first half of the route a few weeks ago and I made it to the 3 shires stone in about 1:50 so I'll be close to the cut-off anyway. That climb up wetherlam killed me!
Hoping for sunshine!!
From the website it looks as though they are trying to arrange parking at Hodge Close. Quite fancy this race, is there a more nifty way between Wetherlam and Swirl How than Prison Band ?
I think the prison band's the best way. It's not too bad, and it makes it a tad more interesting than most plods.
The only way is to straight line it up Prison Band.

As I write all of the parking fields for the Three Shires Race are completely waterlogged, and the forecast is bad. We're looking at alternatives but the race may not go ahead. We've already cancelled the junior races. Further information will be posted here and on the Ambleside AC website by next Wednesday (17.9) so please check before you come.
Sorry! Selwyn
FYI - update taken from the Ambleside web site this afternoon. :)
Ian tells me that folk are keen on the race going ahead with parking at Hodge Close. We'll work on arranging that with the quarry but we're going to need even more help to make that happen. I reckon a marshall on the main road from about 9am directing folk down to the Hodge Close lane end and another on that junction. Then two parking folk up at the quarry. I'll flag the route back to the Shires (about 2k) beforehand. That will neccessitate starting the race at 11.30.
At the moment I have offers of help from yourself, Jane Reedy, and John B. We need in the region of 20 to make it work! At the moment that leaves something of a shortfall!! Step up to the plate now please folks. Emails to me :- 'Any reasonable offer....'
Anyone with a large frame tent?....
For 24 years we've never had more than four or five volunteers a fortnight before the race - as I've said before though, this is where it starts to feel a tad lonely and a even a little bit scary being the organiser of a 'fairly' high profile long race.
Given that for the last couple of years hardly any juniors have turned up, and that as it stands they would be parking 2k away, I think we need to take the decision now to abandon the Junior Races, so please pass that on as a definite decision to any juniors you know (or parents of juniors).
Thanks folks!

THREE SHIRES RACE - GAME ON!!
We've been very lucky to arrange last minute parking at Hodge Close Quarry about 2k from the race venue at the Three Shires Inn.
Just follow the signs and marshalls directions. Afraid we'll have to take another quid off you for the privilege of a 25 minute walk in and out!
We'll delay the start to 11.30am by which time everyone should be there. We'll have a dry-ish, secure-ish clothing store in the race field so you may want to bring spare kit in a distinctive bag. It wont be much fun sorting through 250 Tesco bags to find yours!
Please follow the directions and dont try to find your own parking space somewhere nearer. This is a sensitive issue and the future of the race is in your hands!
Our message has always been:-
'If you can get to Little Langdale, the race will be on.' This has now changed to:-
'Even if you cant get to Little Langdale - the race will still be on!'
Selwyn and Elaine 15.9.08
Fantastic. Well done to Selwyn and his team.
See you there. :):):)
