Just read the first part of this and am surprised at you DT , this is an open forum not a cosy closed club, anyone can access or comment, this is a good thing. The fact someone only visits occasionally does not mean they cannot comment on things being said, or their opinion should be valued less. I agree self policing seems to work, but not all the time otherwise debates like this would not be raised.
Hmm...well I can see where you're coming from AntiS but also DerbyT's point of view. I think it depends on motive of the poster.
As a non-meat eater I wouldn't go on a "best-beef" or whatever forum and tell 'em they were being offensive to my parochial sensitivities. I'm not suggesting that's happened here but merely using an analogy in support that an occassional visitor may have a bias to peddle.
I'd not swapped posts/shared threads with Henry before and admit I was suprised to read them advocating a regime of warn-then-ban for racist or sexist (but not religous?) comments. The case for which I think is unproven (and in my view both uncessary and unwarranted)
I completely agree with jodg that I don't see why we need a code of conduct. Too much UKA-like that for comfort
Anyway, I'm too tired after today's race to think much more...:o I really must get out more and do some training than spend time on here...:D
Let's move on to running and racing!
I hope we are all a pretty tolerant bunch really - for what its worth I thought some of the earlier comments on this thread were taking the mickey out of paranoid heterosexuals - for example the comment '..unless a homosexual steals it..' surely says more about silly attitudes amongst the straight community than homosexuals proclivity to steal things. Its a bit like Little Britain - I dont really find it very funny and dont bother watching anymore but I thought it sent up the bigoted attitudes of some of the rest of us more than it ever did any ethnic minorities or gays.
Have I logged onto the Fellrunning forum or a round of Question time with David Dimbleby, lets get out there in the hills meet like minded people, have a bit of crack, and spend less time on here getting wound up, starting threads that have nothing at all to do with the pastime we love getting all wound up hiding behind pseudonyms and getting bogged down with PC and H&S leave that to the politicians and do gooders for god sake. ( Dont worry no religious connotation there.)
And er what makes you thing you've got the right to do that.
Are you the kind of "liberal" who thinks everyone should speak their mind as long as it agrees with you?
For my money this forum is the most welcoming, open and, paradoxically, sensible one of any kind I've found and the only one I now use.
The internet, text culture, the new user-controlled media generally is awash with filth insults bigotry and stupidity.
If I were you I'd go on an explore and find some better targets, though you will find a less good humoured response.
Sorry brother but behind your articulate and reasonable style my snout detects a troublemaker.
You're not Norbert Denstrangle reincarnated are you?
[QUOTE=The Piglit;244075]And er what makes you thing you've got the right to do that.
The same right as anyone else to express an opinion and start a debate on this website
For my money this forum is the most welcoming, open and, paradoxically, sensible one of any kind I've found and the only one I now use.
Because people can express and debate opinions, something you are apparently not in favour of.
Sorry brother but behind your articulate and reasonable style my snout detects a troublemaker.
So do I, perhaps you should leave eh piglit?
Not very successful at isolating Piglets quote above, but basically a response to his/her post.
I don't know who the hell I am really.
But I know the difference between telling people what to think and expressing an opinion
Probably
And satire only really works when people take it seriously
Oh yes he was!
Just wondered though :-
Bernard Manning (Stand up Comic)
Love thy Neighbour (70s sitcom)
Till Death us do Part (70s sitcom)
Dad's Army (60s/70s Sitcom)
Gimme, Gimme Gimme (recent sitcom)
Little Britain
Peter Kay / Pheonix Nights / Max & Paddy
Put them in an order of acceptance from least acceptable to most acceptable today.
The older stuff would be hoodoo for many, but I sit and watch Peter Kay and wonder how he gets away with some of the stuff he does - same with Little Britain.
I actually like them all as they are funny and at some point in all of the above, practically every walk of society has the piss taken out of them.
Frankie Boyle as well
The politics of acceptability is a fast moving cultural game where, if you keep your eye on the ball you will miss what is happening to the goal posts
If you really want the humour of hate, try this joker

I once heard a tape of him. He made Bernard Manning sound like Mark Thomas
Nice people? Oh who was it who said Satire is dead?
Bigotism isn't a word.
Cripes! I am amazed. As Piglit said all of my (only 8 out of 104) posts on this thread have been reasonable, never once have I bitten back or taken offence or sniped. Read them. I don't even think my points were particularly out of the ordinary. The only reason I started the thread was because I thought it a shame to continue this discussion on the Borrowdale thread, although it had already started there. Why do these ideas (and they have been presented as ideas) upset you so much?
I've just received a (spoof I'm guessing) pm from antisocial saying:
I think he's picking on me because I have sticky out ears :)Quote:
Hi
Just heard the news from Brett.
Sorry you are being banned from the forum for your perceived homophobic and racist comments (Al and the French I think).
Think its a bit harsh, but as he will have said its based on the number of PM's and other complaints he has had. I am sure you have tried to reason with him, but if this goes ahead, (assuming it has not already), I'll say goodbye now.
I have enjoyed sparring with you all on this forum and no doubt will bump into you in races in the future (well not Al as he is too fast).
Best wishes
paul
You and the others picked yourselves;)
It certainly got Merry, there was 45 mins between, the oh well I don't care if I am banned message and the "hah", its a wind up one and Stolly wasn't sure if it was a wind up.
Bet there were some PM's flying behind the scenes.
Couldn't resist, shame Al seems to be away at the moment.
haven't read all this, looks like a bit of a ding-dong
but in general I reckon a good rule to work by is, don't say owt on the internet that you wouldn't be prepared to say to someone to their face
There were some serious points made at the start of this, unfortunately I think the guy who made them felt so dispirited by the response to ideas that essentially came out his values and decency (whether you agree or not), that he appears to have removed himself from the forum.
Don't agree with your rule, there are people (racists, homophobes etc) who would be willing to spout abuse or offensive remarks to peoples faces - this does not make it right.
Some people are perfecvtly happy to spout offensive abuse to people to their faces - does
