One thing that always made me raise an eyebrow were the big signs over new roads or building projects proclaiming 'Built with EU funds'.
Whereas the truth would always have been 'Built with UK Money taken by the EU and then given back'.

I always wondered what the 'middleman' took???

While that's true, I'm not sure a UK government would have funded useful infrastructure projects such as trams in northern cities.

Hmm, I think you may be on shaky ground if you’re extolling the virtues of EU spending. All Governments can be wasteful but the EU has managed to get it down to a fine art. Their auditors invariably have to qualify their report on the grounds of material error.
