looks like Lakesrunner / PB don't do a race map for this one?
Was looking to enter this one having sat it out for the last 2 years, only to discover entries are full as of last week (ie when I looked to enter)- hey ho - will have to get my rear in gear in time for next years race.
I bought one last year, from Lakesrunner I think. They tend to stock up nearer the race (presumably holding back in case of route changes)?
It was useful but far from essential. You can work out a decent route from the grid references and the forum reccy is good for insider knowledge!
heh, OK cheers Ian
That wouldn't be taking the most direct route between Grindsbrook Knoll and Ringing Roger would it Ian? :D
I did a gentle recce with a mate of mine from the start round to Hollins Cross in around 3hrs just after Christmas. Mind you, that was in deep snow and did include an unplanned detour to the Kinder Trig point  If there's that much snow around on race day, I'm not confident of making the cutoff simply because it's so much harder.
Was thinking of maybe attempting a recce this week. How bad is the weather/ground at the moment? Not so much for the running, that's the easy bit. I'm thinking more of my donkey of a car getting stuck.
Maybe I should wait until the week after.....
The cut off believe it or not is easy to make, as cut offs go. After the first climb from the village hall its a good track that only gets better all the way round to Mam Nick. The track after Mam Nick though goes tits up big time - I suggest you train by wading through bogs rather than worrying about the first half.
Last year I ran off like an idiot and completed the first half like speedy gonzalez. My wheels though fell of hugely in the second half, not particularly assisted by a crocked ankle coming off of Win Hill, and I was overtaken by 1000's if not 1,000,000's of runners :D
Seconded; the cut-off is not too difficult to make. I did my first skyline in 2008, having done only one previous AL event, made the cut-off with plenty to spare and finished in 4h10m. Comparatively, i reckon that tough Middle distance Triathlons (HIMUK, wensleydale, Hellvellyn etc) were probably harder than this race.
The first half is fairly straightforward; it's all good running (trail rather than fell) and well marked.
The second half is definitely more of a challenge; endless bogs from Lord's Seat to Brown Knoll really sap all the strength out of the legs, then all the exposed gritstone around to Ringing Roger gives them plenty of opportunities to get tangled up!!
The last section is the only real navigational challenge; can be hard to find your way if the clag is down.
I agree; do plenty of long hill intervals (at least 10 minutes) and get off the paths and into the bogs. Don't worry about speedwork; you won't need it.
Not sure I agree about the cut-off being easy, depends on your fitness obviously. The first half has 2 big climbs (Ringing Roger, Lose Hill) and a long drag up to Winn Hill but is mostly on good paths / tracks apart from a short section at the top of the first hill.
Ok, I admit, I just haven't been fit enough in previous years :) but relatively speaking I am stronger on the second part usually picking up a few places.
So this year, less fit than ever not having raced since Mickledon Straddle last year the cut-off is certainly a worry.
I'm rather slow (3/4 of the way down the results is a good race for me) and I've only been missing the cut off by 5 to 10 minutes in my reccys. (I've never raced it before - this year will be my first.)
If I'm getting near the cut off then it really cannot be that tough!
I would recomend having a look at the second half - easy to get lost in bad weather when tired.

is this full now? If so can you still get put on a waiting list?
don't think it is full: there are about 350 entered at the moment, but no mention on the facebook page of what the limit is ....
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Edale-...583#/?ref=home
The DPFR http://www.dpfr.org.uk/#skylineTabid0 web site says its full, I think the limit was 350.
Is there a list of entries anywhere, can't seem to see anything on the DPFR site
Got an email conf last year of entry is this happening this year? Sent the entry off ages ago but not heard anything :(
Entry list is on the facebook group
http://www.facebook.com/#/pages/Edal...3207583?ref=ts
There's an Edale Skyline face book page at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/p...856&ref=search
If the link doesn't work just log on to facebook and search for Edale Skyline.
Seems I was a bit slow posting this, not a big fan of facebook myself either.
There is an Emma Gregory on the entry list, is that you?
I have been recceing the first half of the Edale Skyline today and i will be doing the second half tomorrow. Now i know some of you guys find this sort of questioning bad form but here goes. Since this is my first go at this race would any of you more experienced guys be prepared to give us some advice on the best lines and other tips. Just want to give myself best chance of getting round as not the speediest. Cheers Matt.
How did you get on today tri-mind ? I attempted to recce the 2nd half today but found the knee high snow tough going for a training run. Couldn't find any obvious routes across the untouched snow so did a bit of hill work and pootled home instead. Maybe next week..............
Agreed was a bit wintry just as a reference first half was do-able yesterday. Yes just decided to have a nice morning out.As i mentioned above with it being my first attempt at this race i'm hoping someone will give me some tips for lines etc. Because you assume your choosing the right line but not having done it before you do not have any previous reference to go on. Experience is the best thing for learning this and i am recceing but anything to help would be great anyone.
There will be a big recce happening soon mate, date to be arranged i think, but keep your eyes open on the edale skyline recce thread, last year about 20 of us showed up and got to know a few secrets.
Cheers will look out for the big recce.
For those not on Face book or just those who would like to know the Entry list Is here
Not sure i can do big sun 21st feb recce. Is there anyone out there doing a recce in the next week who would not mind company. If so PM me {I am very Slow}.
Very quiet on this thread, is everyone over on Facebook? Not on there, I'm afraid.
Went up for a reccy yesterday, did Mam Nick to Brown Knoll, then all the way around to Ringing Roger, and down the the finish (of course, then hed to get back to car at Mam Nick...). Great fun with the deep snow on top - apparently made the running easier in places that are usually muddy. This will be my first Skyline, so am looking forward to it. I'm not convince I have it sussed yet, so will be relying on following tracks in snow, or simply runners in front. Hope I sahll not have to use the map and compass in anger!
well you've reccied the tricky bit there I think
the sections before and after brown knoll struck me as the only bits where the compass might come out to head on the best line, if you don't trust the people in front
the last four, five miles or so is pretty much on the walkers' path round the edge of kinder as I remember it?
but then I'm talking from only reccying it once
Just to check with everyone Mam Nick car park is on the Rushup Edge rd.
Thanks IDP. Where are you training today ?.
Can anyone offer any route advice from Lords Seat to Brown Knoll trig?
Reccyd it recently & a couple of times a few years back & have always followed a broken wall then run on a bearing, always ending up following a kind of trough up the last bit which is just to the right of the trig. This works ok but takes you through all the bogs. When i raced it 2 years ago I played follow my leader & seemed to go much further left avoiding most of the bogs. Wondered which route is best. If the "race route" is the better option any hints on how I can find it again please :D
The way you describe is the way I go normally and seems to avoid the worst of the bogs. It may be different if its frozen though as the signposted path (at least I think there is a sign) further to the left is arguably easier running although a bit longer.
thats pretty much it. after the wall watch for the BS you can run either side of the ditch. Left is shorter but right is dryer (Usually):D
If there is a frost before the race the gully looks like a fast way up with compacted snow.
Thats why BK is the most feared part of the route
