So mental note to myself , don't follow he's over fleetmoss !
Sorry to hear that some of you have aches and pains. I really hope that you're all fit by next Saturday. However... if you do need to pull out I'd like to mention that we still have a waiting list of eager potential entrants. There will be someone keen to take your place, so please do let us know, even if it's quite close to the event. I think there's going to be a posting on the Fellsman site that says when the last time will be that emails will be checked.
To be honest old un the worst of the fleet moss bogs are avoided by running alongside the southern fence, which with the new middle tongue CP probably makes even more sense than it even did before - I have been through the fleet moss bogs twice though following the Jeffrey Pot line and its a bit like going over the top at the Somme :)
I reckon the best boggy/wet bits will be the drop down to Flinters Gill from Great Coum, the crossing of the valley from the Craven Way (after the ruined shack) to the Blea Moor trig, probably the drop down through the woods after that, Great Knoutberry as you scoot up and back down from the Artengill Beck cart track, the run down from there to Redshaw, then the following the wall past Snaizeholme until the Ribble Way before Dodd Fell and....... heck its not worth listing any more; suffice to say expect to get wet feet and muddy socks :)
Enjoying the "Fellsman Banter"..........whilst nervously mulling over all the 1st timer concerns.
Not least the fact that I'm still waiting for delivery of a pair of Speedcross 3's. Delivery promised for Monday, but leaves little time to try them!!!
Old Wave Harriers completely shot and wouldn't pass inspection!!
Oh well, if i wasn't worrying over this it would be have I got the correct Number of Safety Pins....splints.... tool for removing stones from Horses hoof......
Nah then Steamy .By the sound of it you may be better with wellies! Top prep tho',ordering new shoes a week before race?
Good luck.
(Work quiet,i take it?)
Hey up S. Pig, Speedcross 3's should be ok straight out the box, mine were, did a 25 miler for first run in em, Best o luck mate.
waiting for my new wave harriers to come and break em in tooi bet theres a few of us first timers starting to get nervous as the week goes on. thanks for info stolly its more than helpfull i'll check them against the 2011 route i got off moorland challenge. i noticed theres acouple of out and backs like gt knoutberry and whernside does this sound right i havent had a proper look yet so dont know any alternatives,if there is any, i sent my mate your picture and also described it as the somme. more rain forcast next week too. would it be worth wearing seal skins or are past that now up there
Yeah, there are three places where you cover the same ground twice - the Whernside trig, where you follow the ridge line back beyond where you came up all the way down to something like grid ref 725790 where you cross the wall* to drop into Kingsdale, the top of the climb up Gragareth, where you have to scoot 500 yards or so to the trig CP and back before following the wall to Great Coum, and the up and down of Great Knoutberry, where you follow the Arten Gill cart track to 794862 before hacking off up to the Great Knoutberry trig CP and back. Its really annoying seeing other runners whizzing down from Great Knoutberry while you're staggering up :)
I wouldn't think sealskin socks are needed unless maybe its absolutely chucking it down on the day
* A temporary ladder is placed over the wall at the right spot, although in 2010 some plonker (sorry Keighley Scouts) had put it in completely the wrong place :)
Cheers stolly there three I've got and as ever you've been more than heipfull, I'm gona owe you
A pint at this rate :-) just of to mucky up new shoes that have just arrived .
Unfortunately have just seen the orthopaedic surgeon and he has advised against running for at least 6 weeks, as a result I have to withdraw from this years Fellsman. As you can imagine I'm totally gutted:thunbdown:
Good luck to you all and I'll be thinking of you next saturday, run well, run safe, Mark
Sorry to hear that Mark, I know you were looking forward to the Fellsman .:o Injuries come and go but the Fellsman will be around for while yet.......we'll join you for next year's! Hope you make a speedy recovery, in the meantime all the best to everyone running it this year.
Sorry to hear that some of you are injured and that you've had to pull out Protodoc. Hope you get better soon.
Finally pulled my head out of the sand and am marking up my maps, studying the route and working out which checkpoints have the best veggie tucker:D Bought my survival bivvy bag and some replacement plasters for my first aid kit. I actually feel something close to excitement as opposed to complete dread now.:)
Mark, really sorry you're having to withdraw. Come back strong for next year. Would you consider offering your services as a volunteer instead? I did that in 2010 when I got injured and the memory is etched on my mind. It was a fantastic experience and a real education.
Nick.
Thanks for that Nick, I was hoping to follow your lead on this one after failing to spot you on the Howarth Hobble:o, oh well, maybe next year. I'm still giving a lift to two friends who are still doing it so I'm going to print off the list of numbers and try to mingle at the start and personally wish as many of you well on the day.
I seem to remember Dent in 2010 had some excellent cheese & onion pasty type things. I'd gone off much too quickly in the first 20 miles and those pasties and a big mug of tea got me going again (briefly). Pasta and tomato sauce at wherever the check is before the climb to Great Knoutberry (sp?) really sorted me out though. Washed down with a brew and a gel. I really enjoyed the second half of the event. Will definitely be doing the Fellsman again at some point. Good luck to all of you next weekend!
Having now had a proper look at the southern crossing of Fleetmoss I can safely say there is no way I'd follow the road to Deepdale and then climb up to the top of Yockenthwaite Moor from there, even though the Middle Tongue CP is now so close to the edge. Compared to the Jeffrey Pot line, the southern crossing, certainly to the top of Deepdale, was really easy going albeit a bit tussocky in places. I'd guess that the road is at least half a mile longer and at least 900 feet more climb (full on climb at that). I take your point about the road being easier to run on but the top felt easyish too. Good luck either way DB
just had a proper look myself and memory map made it .7 of a mile longer and agree it looks hell of a climb from the cave ( which is where id imagine you'd come from) i think im going to stick to the moor and take the full fellsman expierence its more in the spirit of it for me. although i am wondering wether to take the southern fence line along fleetmoss edge or the more northern wall cp boundry over the moor, is there any difference ? just spent the afternoon doing the maps and lamminating so like hes a bit happier and reay for the off now
Yes, anything up to a mile of peat groughs and sinking bog water :)
The northern Jeffrey Pot line goes smack through it all head on, that's all of the gloriously boggy brown bit below, whereas the southern line goes round the much grassier bottom

Just to add my two penn'orth, I'd definitely stick to the southern wall. Even in the dark it's a bit easier to follow - if you start going downhill to your right, you're going off course and need to concentrate! You'll reach a stile that has (or did have) a blue cup tied to it, then it's down and over a gully and onto the open bit where you'll be looking for the check point.
The old route used to go over that stile but it's out of bounds now, and obviously the checkpoint moved down from the trig to it's new location.
Good luck with it all of you, mebbe I'll have another crack next year!
Thanks stolly and plodding bear all penn'oths welcome, I've got the southern line marked on the map but the more direct line kept catching my eye , but that's that put to bed then and a bog snorkel avoided
Shame u won't be there pb, but think of the washing afterward you'll save on :-)
I just found this completely at random saved to my computer at work (from 2009 I think). Although the scale exagerates the height ridiculously it still gives a nice impression of all of the Fellsman peaks to battle round :)

Absolutely spot on........I knew that bloody wheely bin would have it's uses.
Hhhhhmmmm! That didn't work too well.
Stolly help, how do you embed a youtube video into the forum post
Attached is the actual track I took last year (shown in red), is this the true southern route? I ask because there seems to be an option going south of the tarn which may be drier (which I plotted in blue). Thoughts appreciated.
Attachment 6023
It's the blue route that most would regard as the southern route. Definitely drier and more walkable as a rule!
My plan is to head north easterly from the checkpoint passing above the wall that disects the hillside and then either turn slightly more easterly from there or carry on till the west to east fence line above, depending on the going under foot. Ideally I'll then be hooking straight east just after South Grain Tarn to get to the Hell Gap CP. Its a plan that will be pretty easy in clear conditions and a bit/a lot tougher in fog and/or after dark
I followed a more southerly line last year. Heading due east from the checkpoint, crossing the wall you mention (there is a obvious - subject to visibility - gap) and making for the wall corner at 924 807 (Although I hit it dead on last year, it also should be easy to find in unfavourable conditions, as the line of the NW running wall is continued by a fence (not marked on Harvey map) if I remember correctly). There was a good trod along the NE running wall all the way to the track which is gained maybe 50m south of the CP. Judging from the fact that I overtook a pair who had passed MT ahead of me and who took a more northen line (I assume one similar to yours) this variant appears faster. It certainly sounds like an easier option with respect to navigation.
Seriously bad sprain to ankle yesterday in lakes when orienteering. So bad even had day off work to try RICE. Now multi-coloured and size of small melon
Not looking good for weeknd. Will be gutted if unable to run but will decide before Thurs eve so someone can have my place if it comes to that
I've ended up hurting my back...it went whilst I was having my breakfast last Friday and I can only assume it was because I was over enthusiastic at my pilates class the night before. Ironically, it hurts most of the time except when I'm running so I should be fine for the weekend.
bloodyhell were dropping like flies bad luck karen , fingers crossed it goes down and stick aload of pain killers in yer bag hes. my bloody car has f@%$£d up on me and ive had to borrow a little hair dressers car so think ill have set off tom to get there on time will have a look at middle tongue bit
