Goodness me - how the heck can you drink 2 litres of lucozade in one day????!!!!

Before setting off (sachet carefully left with registration marshall.)
At bottom of Penyghent (sachet carefully dropped into litter bag at 1st drink station.)
At Ribblehead (sachet carefully stored in bumbag whilst climbing Whernside.)
At Hill Inn (sachet carefully stored in bumbag whilst climbing Ingleborough.)
After race (bottle returned to father, who carefully put empty bottle into his rucsac.)
I see the missing data has arrived at last from Pen-Y-Ghent:

Hi Tussockface,
I do apologise, but your description of yourself conjures up such a vivid picture in my mind, but I don't recall ever seeing such a sight on the climb up Whernside. Red and white hoops? Did you have to gyrate to keep them up? Fluorescent pink elixir?? :o
Yes, I was taking pictures all the way round (and beforehand and afterwards) - about 80 in all. I've uploaded them onto Snapfish, which requires you to register your details before you can view them, so I'll try to find a more user-friendly alternative. Anyhow, for those who can't wait, here's the link:

I suffered compared to last year. I was 23 minutes slower, couldn't do any more than jog the downs and flats and CRAWLED up Whernside and Ingleborough. I honestly thought I was going to miss the Hill Inn cutoff, especially when I nearly snapped my left foot off on my clumsy, bumbling descent of Whernside. (Those Mitzuno Wave Harriers left my feet too exposed to the rocks and rough hard terrain. It'll have to be back to more stable, padded trail shoes if I return.) I was well pleased to see the Hill Inn checkpoint brought forward, otherwise I might have been timed out.
I was lucky in that I had no hint of cramp (never do), probably because I don't go fast enough. My time was 5:08.
I was so glad all the forecasts I'd seen were so WRONG. It was a great day.
Nick.
Just wanted to add my thoughts to the comments on cramp, I have done the 3 Peaks for the last four years and on the three previous occassions have been in bits with cramp. This year after a tip off from a running club member I carried some small sachets of salt from McDonalds with me. When the cramps started (as they always do) going up Whernside over the course of the ascent I had three sachets washed down with energy drink and the cramps gradually faded away about 5 mins into the descent.
I had another two sachets at Hill Inn and wasn't troubled by cramp again in the race. I must emphasise that these are small sachets, I am sure that taking on large amounts of salt is very bad for you but during such an extended period of exertion all I can say is it worked for me - I beat my previous PB by more than 40 minutes finishing in 4.18.
Anyone else tried the same thing?
Finally well done to all runners and my thanks to the organisers, marshals, and everyone who gave encouragement along the way, it was a great, well run event.
Hi Chris D - I had a similiar cunning plan, but checked my bumbag part way up whernside and could not find my 2 x KFC salt sachets:eek:
Got back to the car to find them on the floor in the boot under the kit bags of the team mates that travelled with me, along with my Ibuleve 10% that I especially bought on Friday night and also could not find before I set off.
The best laid plans... looking at the splits, I was on for about 4:25 - 4:30 until the crmps set in coming off Whernside, but 4:39 at 1st attempt with my previous longest race being 14 mile - I can't complain.
Hi WP, I didn't get cramp at all in my legs...they were just like jelly going up Whernside!
I had bad stomach pains up and down Whernside though. At Ribblehead I felt really hypo so had had a gel and some jelly babies, and also a carb drink but I think I didn't drink enough water, and I think that's what caused the pains as they went as soon as I had a big drink of water at Hill Inn.
However...I'm no where near as fast as you guys! Glad I gave it a shot though and got round in a fab time in comparison to normal people!!! :D[/QUOTE]
Thanks for your input MG - I don't think the speed is the issue - many of the athletes had cramp from the low 3 hour guys to the 5 hour + ones, but they seem to be Men, and the ones I saw rolling around at the top of Whernside were all men.
Gel's are notorious for the stomach cramps.

So that's what was doing it!
Thanks WP. I think I'll give the gels a miss next time. The lucozade energy tablets seem to do the job for me without the stomach pain.
Strange how it seems to be only the men suffering from leg cramps... it's probably just the people who sweat more but don't compensate with enough fluid. Not sure if muscle strength/size/density/exertion has something to do with it also. Which would certainly explain why I did'nt get leg cramps!
BritNick
Can you let me know how I view your pics on Snapfish?
I had a couple of briefish cramp attacks but didn't suffer nearly as badly as before. I don't use gels (too much like swallowing a grolly for me) but did drink enough going round, which is where I've definitely gone wrong previously. I've done lots more steep hill running too though which must make a difference.
Still it really annoyed me when two or three women overtook me running well on that last little grassy plateau before the sheer scramble on Whernside, clearly feeling very light on their feet and not at all worried by cramp. Sweat could be an issue and I sometimes think that women, taken as a whole, are better at the ascents rather than descents when running hills - probably bollocks I know but the logic being that they're less inclined to be stupid going down hill so work much harder at being good going up.
I think it has more to do with the fact that women don't whinge about pain as much as men:D
Best wishes to the absolutely distraught Aussie competitor hobbling at only 15km in. Her calf had blown and through tears she said how much she had been looking forward to the event esp. given the distance she had travelled just to get here.
Was great to see lots of us stopping to check on her welfare....although any litter louts in the vicinity probably didn't bother!!
I thought it was only me, but upon reading some of the posts to this thread I see that quite a few of us suffered from stomach cramps and/or leg cramp. Some good advice offered - I like the suggestion about using salt sachets.
In my case (stomach ache) I think I took on too many complex carbs for breakfast - porridge, crumpets with jam and bananas was a bit much. I'll know for next time!
Feel fine today. And the Sat night curry went down a treat!
Anyone done a 'leg loosner yet'
Managed a surprisingly swift 6 miles this morning when I eventually got going, however, I think rigor mortis has now set in!
My "leg loosener" will be the "Washington Wasp" tonight. IanDarkPeak will be in attendance as he's set the route I believe:

Feel surprisingly chipper today.... :)
Might be a different story after the run mind you....
Wife was telling me about a women that got stuck on top of a stile when cramp struck and had to be lifted off the stile. Reckon cramp comes to all but maybe its more to do with the % of men actually doing the race compared to women therefore more tales of men suffering.
I am lucky enough to hardly suffer from cramp and I put it down to my pre-race meal of bacon butties and drinking Nuun drinks.
I hear it was a mineral imbalance so the more you are sweating the more likely you are to come down with cramp. Water doesn't work as it re-hydrates you but doesn't replace salts and minerals.
Just come across some 2008 race pics:
http://www.photoboxgallery.com/bobsmith/8095615
There were LOADS of folk snapping on the day! Anyone know of other sites?
I've just logged on to post some too.
Some of these are brilliant.

Ta Millipede! :p
None of me though.... :(
Anyone any idea who won the team prizes?
P&B won the mens
Russian team won the womens
We stayed in the same B&B as the Russians and they seemed remarkedly miserable given their success.
I hope you were tongue-in-cheek about the pre-race alcohol abstinence! I tried that as an experiment a few weeks ago, and my times hit the pits, which proved conclusively that allowing your beer level to drop is not good for running. But then - what were they testing for in the dope tent?
Millipede, some of those photos on flickr are fantastic, aren't they? Loads of possible 'Fellrunner' covers...
BritNick, I've signed onto Snapfish but it doesn't seem to want to let me view your album. Any idea what I have to do?
Hi Tussockface and anyone else who's tried in vain to view my pics. I do apologise. Snapfish is rubbish. I'm kicking it into touch. I've just opened a Flickr account this evening and I'm uploading there. Try this instead:

2008 3 Peaks Checklist for Chris.
Build up races correct? Not really but he put the training in.
Adequate Hydration? I doubt it.
Pre-race massage? Depends on how you define it. ;)
Pre-race carbo loading? Two slices of toast.
Pre-race alcohol abstinence? As if. Bottle and a half of red wine the night before.
Pre-race taper in the two weeks before? As if. The guy would go mad if he didn't run every day.
Plenty of food/drinks consumed on the day? Two gels and some water.
Improvement on last year? First time he's done it.
Enter the 2009 Three Peaks to attempt to break this year's 3:20? He can live in hope but he thoroughly enjoyed this race and will be definitely be back next year.
By the way Crowhill, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
I bet Anna Pichrtova didn't drink a bottle and a half of wine the night before.
And if not it is probably part of the reason she is better than most of us are!
Hi Epocian. Try

I've abandoned Snapfish.
