Speaking from experience at having been "rescued" myself.....in my opinion (and it is only my opinion) the people who provide these services actually enjoy being called out and doing what they do......when things turn out ok you understand me......I'm not suggesting for a second that people deliberately get themselves into compromising situations.......but I do feel that there sometimes is an over-reaction.....and besides, it makes us look harder than we actually are and also impresses the girls.....
I do. He is still alive though old
Dear Stumpy
I have raced and marshalled the 1000m on numerous occasions and as you are well aware the weather has a huge part to play.
This is especially so in the 1000s because the first long section is over the Carneddau via Foel Grach ( if you can find it) Llewellyn, Carnedd Daffyd and the Fynnon Llygwy Reservoir road.
Talking to James McQueen a fellow Eryri Harrier like myself and a very experienced and strong runner, he knows the Carneddau extreamly well but even he got horribly lost near Foel Grach in last years ugly weather.
If you can successfully navigate to the A5 near Helyg Mountain hut then whatever the weather you can complete the race from there as the route is not too hard to find.
It's the Carneddau that can make or break your success in the race.
I live in nearby Llandudno and rarely venture into the Carneddau when the pea soup is down as navigation is EXTREAMLY HARD with not a single landmark to take a bearing from.
If you think the 1000s is a good challenge have a go at the Peris Horseshoe in September which starts in Llanberis in the same spot as the International Snowdon Race but is a much tougher challenge than the 1000s even though it's nearly 4miles shorter.
Anyway good luck with the 1000s and hope the 5th June is dry and cloud free.
All the best
Peter
Good advice Peter.
Its ****ing terrible
Stumpy its good. I'm missing it again this year. Unfinished business, ran 3:57:03 there 2 years ago, but then the RO added 3 minutes to the times...so annoyingly 3 seconds over the 4 hrs..
I think its similar to Borrowdale, quite a bit of running, quite fast in place, good tracks for lots of it (once you hit Foe Grach area really). The hardest part is the Carneddau, the correct line from Aber Falls through the Beras, around Foel Grach and then the descent is worth recceing.
The nav isn't that difficult, assuming you keep the map out and navigate, once lost though it is hard to relocate due to few distinguishing features. If the clag is really down through the Beras can be tricky. If you have time check out the Carneddau section. From the Summit of Foel Grach (worth visiting in bad weather) to C Dafydd should be straght forwards in any weather, and then the descent isn't too tricky.
From then on its straight forwards apart from a 500m spell at Caseg y Fraith, finding the top of the miners, people have been lost there.
Even though it's longer I've always found the Peris harder. Maybe the 1000m is easier mentally, get half way, one climb over the Glyders, then a nice walk up Snowdon. All easily broken down.
Worth dropping food at the A5 and PyP or get support to meet you there.
re McQueen, I think he got lost like me at Foel Fras through being too familiar, you think you know the area, pick up landmarks and make everything fit, in an unfamiliar area, say racing in Jura, I'd have had the map out far earlier, just wouldn't take a risk. I think even CD also got lost, although he went on for his customary win, for similar reasons. Foel Fras taught me a lesson for sure.
Less physically demanding than Peris horseshoe, as previous comments suggest, but I like the 1000s because the field spreads out and it's a genuine test of hillcraft/nav if the weather is bad - as it was last year. In addition to Iain and others comments about the Carneddau, it's also worth taking the time to check bearings as you cross the Glyders at Caseg Fraith.
Thats all very well but the worst bit is that last drag along the railway track to Snowdon summit, pretending to look like a hard runner in front of hordes of Millet-clad walkers when in reality you are completely in bits, siezed up with agonising cramp and dragging your sorry ass summit-wards at less than walking pace....well, thats how I remember it!:D
But its a mere pussy compared to Peris...for hard nut/masochists only! Luv it!!
Does anyone have this in electronic form (e.g. GPX, TCX) or which I could download from a mapping site. Would like to see it on a map, or ideally put on my Garmin for a recce.
Hi Duncan,
can't help you with an electronic version, but good description on this thread;
http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/showthread.php?t=6884
Had a look at the section between Aber and Llewelyn a couple of weeks back. As far as I can make out, not really any track to follow between the beras. After foel grach (which you can avoid in the race), it's relatively staright forward though.
Anyone on here doing this?
I'm having a go for the first time this year and am working up to doing it in under 5 hours which may be a bit ambitious...
I've brought the Welsh race routes book off Amazon, is the route still the same as in here, nav wise it doesn't look too difficult...
Any tips, good places to stay, logistics? For example I was thinking that I might like to catch the train down from Snowdon!
Cheers
I thought this for a few years ago. It would have cost £54 for a return journey for the missus and our daughter and a single for me!:(
I am doing the 'namby pamby' 1/2 too... it didn't feel very namby pamby last year I have to say - respect to those of you who can do the long one! One day I will!
This is the thread from last year - some route advice here too. http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/showt...tre-Peaks-race
Haven't done it since 1995 when I did the military version (same route, same day, but wearing boots and trousers with a fair amount of kit in a day sac). Only trouble I had was getting crag bound on Cregiau Hirion between C Dafydd and Llugwy reservoir, the good path was below me and to my right. Otherwise the route is pretty straight forward. It's a demanding event, save plenty for the Pyg track.
Edit: Just checked Vol 3 of my training diary. It was 1996, came 21st of 351 in 5:26.
I had forgotton about this little dancer - I did it in 95 or 96.
I will have to see if I have earned enough brownie points to escape for the weekend !
It will be good to do it again, and to run it proper this time.
Although the course looks straight forward on the map, this is a very tricky race to get round in low cloud.if you`re farmiliar with the Carneddau then you`ll know what im on about.from the Beras to the A5,a lot can go wrong.do not underestimate the nav,a bit of advice, take some pre race bearings from the Beras to the Aryg then to the main path on Grach then from Grach towards Llywelyn, from the path above the Black ladders (on Dafydd) to the crags above Llygwy and from Llyn Caseg fraith to the Miners track.these will come handy in low cloud.from the miners track its quite straight forward.
Fantastic race, done it a few times, years ago. Don't underestimate it. Nav can be tricky in the carneddau if the mist is down, and coming off Dafydd take care round the rocks - a runner fell off and died there last year I think it was. Eat plenty!!
Hiked it . got 4th in class . Ran it and finished (!) , marshaled it and made the papers!
Hardest race i've done so far .
First section crux 12.5 miles .Eat and drink lots and navigate over Carneddau correctly please !!!!
As people say practice this section - look for the old wall etc .Be carefull , someone died on this event just ahead of me .
I will be on Dafydd marshaling again like last year for hopefully less than 14 hours so say hi !
New checkpoint on way to Llewelyn as lots can't navigate their way that far esp the military !!!
Have all the require kit on board, a foil blanket may save your life and weights nothing. A proper survival bag could make the difference,.
If you see someone in distress please stop and help /phone for help.
It can make a difference.
Regards
Pete BBC
Right, probably going up for a recce this weekend... I'm taking the family so will only have a couple of hours, whats the best bit to have a look at? I'm thinking the first stage past aber falls and onwards would be helpful.
Also any good campsites near the start?
That stretch is the trickier bit in bad weather, down to the A5. Can't advise on camp sites though as I was always stuck in Capel Curig.
doing this -
Infact the memorable sight of the 1000 metres front runners sudden, seemingly almost supernatural materialisation from clag and crag on Llewellyn some years ago, was what first turned my head to the drama and rewards of this fantastic sport and convinced me to swap hiking boots for fell shoes.
So, 3 or 4 years later, quite a few miles, ft of ascent and battle scars gained, reckon i'm about ready to give it a run out.
Reminiscences aside, hoping to reccie the route one weekend this month -
Having caught up with previous threads I'm pretty much there with most of it but am bit unsure of the line down to Llugwy Res' after the Carnedd Dafydd checkpoint. Someone noted an additional checkP at an old mountain wall - anyone got a GR for this, or any more info on that bit?
thanks,
Dave
This should lead you to the site and the CPs.

If not then there is a link on the home page of the site
Yes, same route as 1996 with new checkpoints at A and F to control choice of route.
Great, thanks for that
not doing the recce this weekend had a real busy week and weather looks depressing. May give it a try next WE, got to think of something to do with my partner and child whilst I'm on the hill!
One more Q for those who have done this. Do you take the train back down off Snowdon, or is this seen as plainly copping out? As I am a hard lad I wouldn't want to do anything other than the toughest option.
Leave the car at Pen y Pass for the shorter option or take the 5 mile gentle stroll down to Llanberis. Or do what I did, get your other half to meet you at the top with child, take her ticket off her, take the child with you on the train, and she can walk down. This is a true story, by the way.
