ah so it was cathy bradley I was talking to briefly at last orders at the scafell hotel? (she's lovely)
It's the first time I've ever been hammering round a hardcore race and somebody running alongside me has asked if I'd like any of their water. Really nice.
Then at Bamford Carnival race a couple of weeks ago, I'm warming up in the start field and we sort of clocked each other at the same time, 30 seconds for the penny to drop for both of us, Oh now I remember you....Edale Skyline! 2nd placed Lady with the water!
Glad she's doing so well at the moment.
Just remembered that I was near the top of Great Gable two guys came charging down saying they'd missed the checkpoint at Sty Head and been sent back for it. Anyone know a) what that was all about - how do you get from SP to GG without hitting SH or going badly wrong! and b) if they made the cutoff, since that seems unlikely?
Also, I've seen a schedule to make the cut-off floating around that suggest getting to BessyBoot in 50 minutes will get you to Honister in 4:19. I'm dubious about, I think it's a recipe for a big blow-up! I planned on BB in 45, ended up at 50 due to the slow start down the footpath, and then ran bang on planned pace (so not getting faster, just avoiding fade) all the way to Great Gable, but lost lots of time on the next leg due to injury and reached Honister in 3:55. Suggests to me that if you're trying to make the cut-off, you'd be better advised to take it easier up BessyBoot and save some energy for Gable!
Thanks for the great photo Wharfee - not grimacing at this point!! And thanks for the compliment Zoothornrollo (?!). Not sure where the user name comes from though...be nice to know your proper name! Slightly worse for wear at the end of the night in the Scafell - top night with the Wharfedale crazy-dancing gang!
More added...
Zoltan Fodor (sounds familiar?) at the Sty Head checkpoint

Another cracking picture. Your lens must be well polished wharfee.
I can't see Zoltan's photographic equipment about his person but he managed some considerable pixel exposure along the way. See here.
Cracking weekend, race & night in the pub!!! huge thanks go to all the helpers it really is a proper fell race!
Top pictures Wharfee, whens the rest coming i want the one of me & Holmsey laughing!!
The Band went down a storm and so did the mountain rescue guy who played the spoons!!!
Wharfedale Barmy Army!!!
Cracking pictures Wharfee - well worth the wait. Zoltan's are also a good effort - gives a real feel for the route and the conditions

I didn't include it in the Flickr set coz it wasn't a good enough shot...tha looks like thi right leg's gone funny!
Plus Holmesy's got an arm (I think it's an arm?!) stickin' out of his sponsored shorts!
Well done mate. Just got back from holiday in Coniston. That looks like a good time that you clocked. My target was sub-4.30. Did a few gentle (ish) runs up Walna Scar while I was in Coniston and the ankle doesn't seem to be getting any worse (or better). I'll haul myself around the Viking Chase regardless of injuries just to get that pint of John Smiths at the finish. Can we expect to see a good turnout from Calder Valley at the race?
Cheers
Anyone tell us if Borrowdale is usually a sell out? and is it first come first serve when selecting from the 31st of May.
Yes it fills up. Also, this year, I'm told it's an English Championship race, so it'll fill up quickly. I don't know if it's 1st come 1st served.
On another Borrowdale matter.....
my 3 x experience of running this is that I am dead on my feet by the top of Dale Head. The steep tussocky descent to the tarn is a nightmare on knackered legs, and then I can run again fine down the quarries. I know that the superstars go slightly to the right, but for mere mortals and 'also rans' like myself....
I've often wondered whether it'd be worth running down the tourist path - which is only a little further, but easier on the legs. I'd also wondered about this re the Anni Waltz too. In fact I set off this way on my 1st time out of ignorance and habit, but a helpful fellow runner or marshall called me to the usual line.
Any thoughts?
I've tried a few different lines and its interesting to see route choice in different races - eg Borrowdale, most off to the right a bit and eventually crossing the boggy path a bit to the right of the tarn, TWA/AW - some did that this year, I usually aim for the left of the tarn but descend more centrally and drift left towards the bottom where there is a line though the craggier ground that sets you up nicely to come out where you want to be but the interesting one for me was Dalehead itself - I've seen people in this come back down the path and pass to the left of the tarn which seems a long way round to get to the col before you drop down through the quarries. I suppose its ultimately down to what suits you best and how well you know the little ins and outs and bits of scree etc.
There is a limit on numbers, so it might fill up. Not just first come first served, but there is a qualification criterai for entry that they check too.
I've thought the same myself about the descent from Dale Head, but always ended up taking the line to the right, not wishing to take the gamble at that point - and you're right, it's a real killer after what's gone before! I usually find streams of people overtaking me on this bit whilst I curse every step!
With fresher legs in the AW though, it didn't seem anywhere near as bad...
Done Borrowdale 5 or 6 times and Twa once and and now firmily of the view that the direct line is only faster than the tourist path when you are fresh. I make up places on the tourist path on this section. It's a good run all the way down. The steep and mixed tussocks and rock on the direct route are slow if you do not have the energy to bound down. The path helps keep a rhythm which is faster. Counter intuitive but for us mid packers, true enough. If you're quick, direct may well be better. But I'm not and therefore it isn't.
Thanks for this Mark - it fits with what I'd been thinking. If I am mended in time for Borrowdale this year, I shall go down the tourist path and enjoy the fact that can still run. I shall take note of a few other runners positions at the top of Dale Head and note where we end up. I suspect - like you, as a mid-packer with tired legs - it will be quicker.
I think I'll have to do it twice this year, just to see which line works best then :p
Seriously though, presumably you've done both variations then Mark? I've done Borrowdale 4 times and AW once, but am yet to try the tourist path - given my finish position in Borrowdale though, no reason why I shoudln't - not much to lose TBH and even if it did cost a minute or two if it less painful it might be worth it!
Interesting discussion-
I've always had a mare descending dale head- for borrowdale you're right (being BACK of the pack by then on that one) and tired it maybe worth just going down the path- but for dale head fell race maybe not?
my training partner is considerably faster than me- next training recce of dale head I might propose that she attempts to take a line while I go down the path and I'll see what happens
I'm in, got my letter today. Best get some hill work done :w00t:
Yep, I'm in too. Glad the forumites kept it quiet when entries opened a few days ago.
Im in, should be fun.
I'm in too. It was either run it or marshall it and 4 hours on the top of Scafell Pike is not fun!!
I'm in. Definitely time to get the hill work going! :w00t:
Beginning to panic now:w00t: I DID forget this year and only posted my entry on Wednesday! Having run this every year since I started racing (2006) it has become my favourite form of torture and I was hoping to break 5hrs this time. Keeping fingures crossed:o
I'm in:thumbup:
Come on 4:59:59!
8 weeks to get my legs used to hills again (and big ones at that!). Great Lakes, SLMM, Wasdale and my first taste of BG support should do (some of) the trick!
8 weeks sounds like very little time doesn't it!
Must get some 3hr+ hill runs in.....
Does anyone have split times for the CPs up to Honister inorder to avoid the cut-off at 3:30pm at Honister?
I'd say Scafell 1:45 pm
Great Gable 2:45 pm.
If you get to Scafell Pike at 1:45, aren't you going to struggle to make it to Great Gable for 2:45??
My splits from 2011:
Bessy Boot: 11:50.
Esk Hause: 12:40.
Scafell Pike: 13:10.
Great Gable 14:10.
Honister 14:55 - Foot went, had to stop and relace and then walk for a fair bit round Brandreth.
Dale Head: 15:25.
Rosthwaite: 15:55.
I'm in :w00t:
cant remember times at check points...just recall feeling the need to get a move on when going up scafell pike
Topplecat- can I join your 4.59.59 club?
