So you won't be tempted to eat it?
Fortunately we don't check sell-by dates.

I asked about the baselayer / long-sleeved tops on the Facebook Fellsman page - very prompt reply from Shona Brunskill, (I also asked about taking a pertex windstopper as one of my long-sleeved options - sounds like a good idea if the weather is OK)

Hi I can confirm that the base layer is seperate to the 3 long sleeved layers, which don't include your waterproof jacket (with hood). So indeed, that's 5 items I will have to get someone else to confirm that a pertex wind stopper would count as one of your 3 long sleeved tops though...
And additionally from Suzanne Carter on Facebook. Should clear up any ambiguity :)

Indeed a pertex windstopper top will count as one of your 5 total layers (3 long sleeved, 1 worn - short or long sleeved) and a waterproof with hood). With the weather conditions as they are at present (see photos / website) and as they were last year, we would appeal to all entrants to consider that at least one of these tops should be of fleece/thermal material. Even if it is not or intended to not be worn, in the event of poor weather / injury / becoming lost it will be invaluable. Hope this clarifies your queries, sorry for any confusion.
Blimey, that is a metric chuff-load of layers of clothing.
Must admit it seems lots. I do get very cold but have never used more than 2 thin thermals, a very worn and thin smitten plus cag- along with the hat, gloves etc etc.. I have invested in waterproof gloves (not for this, but fater a couple of long races last year). Also stable doors..... BUT it's their race, they are RO and so their rules..
You know what will happen now...... it will be 28C and people will drop out with dehydration
You've no idea how long we spent discussing the detail and the wording of these rules on a Wednesday night a few months ago, and still you're saying they're ambiguous.
Ah well, it'll give us something to talk about in the next year's batch of committee meetings.
I guess the thought behind having so many extra layers is in case some get wet? Can't have thought they'd ever imagine anyone putting them all on. Unless you had to stop for some reason...
A layer or two could also get wet through sweat in the day which could cool swiftly later on. Also last year I ended up wearing three base layers, my windproof and my waterproof, gloves, hat, running tights and, possibly (although I can't quite remember) my waterproof trousers on top...... and I was still fricking freezing :)
Hi,
This will be my first, ‘Fellsman’ and I could do with some help, please.
Does anyone know of a path/route (preferable with some grid refs) from Middle Tongue checkpoint to the Hell Gap checkpoint?
Any support would be greatly appreciated.
Take care.
I have a gpx of the route if that helps...well its the one I've followed for the last 7 fellsman...obviously it takes note of recent checkpoint changes
I know people have their preferences but mine is the one which goes via Jeffrey Pot....probably a safe option and not as quick as some routes but always worked for me
Message me your email and I can send it if you like
At the start of fleet moss leg,I noticed a small path just down the road from the check point by the big arrowhead road sign going off left.Does this cut out some of the initial bog?
At the other end,the quad bike track goes past several posts, the 1:25 map shows two small tarns, would the middle tongue check point be between third post and larger of the two tarns on the 600 contour line?Could be interesting in the clag!!
Any thoughts on this would be great.
To all fellow bog trotters, have good one
Dave
The weather forecast for Saturday had been looking a bit dodgy yesterday (snow and rain in the afternoon) but its now looking a bit better -> mountain forecast - Whernside and weather outlook.com for BD24 (my post code in Settle).
Still plenty of time for that to all change of course :)
I was just going to post that forecast Stolly, you beat me to it! I saw a poor forecast yesterday but I'm going with this one, looks good doesn't it?
I really couldn't get excited about this and will not be taking part at the weekend. Does anyone know if I should tell the organisers? Are there folk wanting to do this and who haven't got places?
The week of the event, and right on cue...
ta daaaa!
comedy weather forrecast!
Excuse me if I don't bother to click on any of the links.
With a kit list as comprehensive as the Fellsman's, we're hardly likely to get caught out are we?
Haha. Yeah well when you're out in the weather for 15, 16, 17 hours or more the weather can make a diFference. I still remember the deluge of rain over Blea Moor the first time I did it (2009?) And last year's possible hyperthermia, double vision and slurred speach! Anyway I may need to take sun cream :)
I'm not sure I did.... but I was perhaps (even more of) a dipstick in those days ;). A girl running just in front of me at Blea Moor trig was so cold and wet that she couldn't manage to put her gloves on and I somehow managed to help her even though I was completely drenched through and uncontrollably shivering. Luckily I had a spare waterproof with me, a complete change of clothes and my waterproof bottoms - I virtually had to strip and do a complete change in the fire break in the woods dropping off Blea Moor which took ages because I was so cold. Luckily I soon warmed up after that.... and it stopped raining :)
If you have a place and will not be coming it is worth letting the organisers know. It all helps in the planning. email [email protected]
I do have a problem with online sarcasm, but in this case I wasn't being bitey at all. It's this written communication thing.
I was trying to say that getting caught in a deluge on Blea Moor sounds horrendous. And at Blea Moor you do have a long way to go on the Fellsman. Maybe I should make more use of smileys to get my tone across: :D
I remember it well too, running to survive across the big boggy valley up to Blea Moor and back down to the woods, where thankfully the onslaught ceased. Strangely enough, 2009 was my all-time PB year.
I'm a first timer - is it normal to be weighing a malt loaf to make sure it comes in at 300g? And does it count as emergency food (surely it does if marzipan does?) and are other first timers nervous/excited in equalish measure about the weekend? :w00t:
Emergency food is just what it says on the tin: food that you set aside for an emergency. I would assume that anything will do. High density of calories is good in terms of not taking up too much space in your rucksack. It'll be slabs of chocolate or peanut M&Ms for me as then I can enjoy eating it on the train home on Sunday.
I like your thinking - malt loaf will be just the thing for me on the journey home (if I've got the energy to open the wrapper!)
Hi does anyone know if last years checkpoint times are available anywhere?
