Fortunately we don't check sell-by dates.

I asked about the baselayer / long-sleeved tops on the Facebook Fellsman page - very prompt reply from Shona Brunskill, (I also asked about taking a pertex windstopper as one of my long-sleeved options - sounds like a good idea if the weather is OK)

Hi I can confirm that the base layer is seperate to the 3 long sleeved layers, which don't include your waterproof jacket (with hood). So indeed, that's 5 items I will have to get someone else to confirm that a pertex wind stopper would count as one of your 3 long sleeved tops though...

And additionally from Suzanne Carter on Facebook. Should clear up any ambiguity

Indeed a pertex windstopper top will count as one of your 5 total layers (3 long sleeved, 1 worn - short or long sleeved) and a waterproof with hood). With the weather conditions as they are at present (see photos / website) and as they were last year, we would appeal to all entrants to consider that at least one of these tops should be of fleece/thermal material. Even if it is not or intended to not be worn, in the event of poor weather / injury / becoming lost it will be invaluable. Hope this clarifies your queries, sorry for any confusion.

Must admit it seems lots. I do get very cold but have never used more than 2 thin thermals, a very worn and thin smitten plus cag- along with the hat, gloves etc etc.. I have invested in waterproof gloves (not for this, but fater a couple of long races last year). Also stable doors..... BUT it's their race, they are RO and so their rules..
You know what will happen now...... it will be 28C and people will drop out with dehydration

You've no idea how long we spent discussing the detail and the wording of these rules on a Wednesday night a few months ago, and still you're saying they're ambiguous.
Ah well, it'll give us something to talk about in the next year's batch of committee meetings.

No criticism, just an observation. Like I said in my first post, I understood the instruction to amount to 5 layers, but it could be read another way. The further posts on here have been helpful clarifying the instruction.

I guess the thought behind having so many extra layers is in case some get wet? Can't have thought they'd ever imagine anyone putting them all on. Unless you had to stop for some reason...

A layer or two could also get wet through sweat in the day which could cool swiftly later on. Also last year I ended up wearing three base layers, my windproof and my waterproof, gloves, hat, running tights and, possibly (although I can't quite remember) my waterproof trousers on top...... and I was still fricking freezing
