I thought I had gone early enough, 8:30 am, got to the top, stopped there for a bit to eat and a peek at the new building, it was about 10 by the time I started the descent, obviously not early enough. Will have to start earlier next time.
P.S Took me 46mins to get down, I am usually around the 37-38 mark.

The main reason my one and only Snowdon race appearance will not be repeated. Great event but the crowds are out of control. The runners coming the other way are suprisingly not a problem,it's the walkers that spoil it for me. Oblivious to anything further than 2 foot in front of there nose.Quote:

All I can say was that I was glad to finish! I felt brilliant for the first two hours, the weather was amazing, then I ran out of water and had a pretty dodgy half an hour or so until the first water station. I probably had a bit of heat stroke as I suffered with stomach cramps for the next two hours and have vowed never to eat another jelly baby in my life. I was told at pen-y-pass that I didn't look good, which obviously is the last think you want to hear, but managed to stuff a mars bar down and get on it. I found the crowds on the PYG track manageable and basically treated it like a day out in Paris (look down keep on walking, barge them out of the way if they don't move).
I was more than an hour over my target time, but I've got to admit it felt good just to finish this one.
Sam Smith (second) turfed out of bed again at midnight picked up 2 mates (his alarm clock failed so he was woken with a phonecall and made it in 5 minutes) and supported the Llanberis - Ogwen section of the PB round for Caz and Will. To me, that epitomises all that is good in Fell running.
There is a beautiful spring that feeds a small hidden stream running along the crest of thr ridge between Aber Falls and Bera Mawr. Great to refill your bottle at around the 600m contour to last you till Ogwen. The water is top quality.Quote:

Any news on this years course yet, with Glyder's new status. It's in the Wfra calender for 2011.

No news of the new route yet but it promises to be a much better race if it follows a mountaineering line between the Carneddau and the Glyderau.

Has anyone heard anything re: new route for this one? Would the route down to Ogwen still go via Llugwy?
Don't think there has been a call yet. It's quite a detour to go via Llugwy now..in fact looking at the map south off pen yr ole wen and senior's ridge would probably be quickest but not sure they'd let you take that route...Quote:

With the promotion of Glyder Fawr to 1000 metre status it is desired to include this peak in the fell running classes of the Welsh 1000 metre Peaks Race. Please refer to the attached sketch map. Note that the routes shown, which are not intended to be exact, are described from the entrance to Bryn Poeth on the A5 at GR 674606
Option A: Via Cwm Tryfan
Run approx 600 metres west along A5 and cross as directed. Go onto the old road and then immediately turn right through a kissing gate into Open Access land. Traverse SE and take the made-up track passing Little Tryfan up into Cwm Tryfan. Go up the Cwm bearing right near its head to reach Bwlch Tryfan. Follow the steep scree path to the left (East) of Bristly Ridge to reach and traverse Glyder Fach, passing Castell Y Gwynt on its south side (where care and good navigation is needed in misty conditions) to reach the main path running west to the summit of Glyder Fawr. Descend S then SW to start the descent to Pen-y-Pass...
Option B: Via Y Gribin
Run approximately 1500 metres West along the A5, and cross as directed into the Car Park at 659602. Exit through kissing gate at east end and take a line approx SW to pass under Bochlwyd buttress to reach the path ascending the right bank of the stream to reach the outflow of Llyn Bochlwyd. Go West to reach the made-up path which turns SW then S up the rifge of Y Gribin to reach the flat area at 651587. Staying always on the East Face of the ridge climb the steep rocky path, scrambling as necessary to reach the summit plateau. Bear right to traverse the boulder strewn plateau to reach the summit of Glyder Fawr. Descend S then SW to start the descent to Pen-y-Pass...

Personally, Don't think the PYOW South Ridge is that dangerous...personally I think the hideous gully by the side of Bristly ridge is a potential death trap, there will be some considerable rock fall there one day.Quote:

Iain, ydt - thanks for the answers. I'm back in Wales for a couple of weeks in April so hopefully the route will have been decided by then so I can do a full recce.

Only fell runners will go over Glyder Fawr this year. What do people feel about the scrambling section at the top of the Gribin Ridge just before reaching the plateau?
Straight forwards scrambling, ran up in most weathers and never been concerned. if you stay right you avoid all drops. out left you can make it a tad hairier..one of the easiest grade 1's. Personally I think the descent off Lliwedd in the Peris has more objective danger.
Going to have a bit of a recce of the new bits tomorrow if the weather is good.
I`ve been up the gribyn before but i dont think i`ve come down Carnedd Dafydd that way before,should be straigtforward with good visability but come off too early and you might get into a bit of bother above Cwm Lloer.
I'll have to get a few recce's of this one in as i've never done it before, if anyone's available sometime!! but a packed calender between now and the race does'nt leave much options unless i can get some days off work.
Is some of the route flagged or marked?

Such as would you reccomend the ridge along Crib Goch or better to go up the Pyg and then hang a right ? and am i safe to assume that a typical route goes via Ogwen when assending Glyder Fawr ?
After the top of the falls at Aber have been cleared follow the path up stream and cross at a small island, go straight up a grinding flog to get between the Bera. Fairly good trod to safety checkpoint. After that aim for the right hand side of foel grach, missing the summit and aiming a rock outcrop. Countour the side of foel grach to the saddle between it and llwellyn. Over llwellyn and onto the ridge to dafydd. Come back on yourself after this top and decend via a stream to the mountain rescue post. Over the Cribyn is fairly straight foward. The route off the glyders can be tricky so worth a recce. Crib goch is out of bounds so it's up the pyg track.
In addition to the above, the route from Carnedd Dafydd to where you leave the road at Ogwen is fixed and flagged. From Glyder Fawr to Pen-y-Pass there is a bit of route choice - as per Perris H'shoe. It is compulsory to get to the top of the Pyg Track before visiting Garnedd Ugain. Yiannis

Nigel, see posting 233. Route flagged from C. Dafydd, past mountain rescue post, down to road, along road to car park just past Tryfan, end of flags. Next check is at Llyn Bochlwyd. Then Y Gribin ridge. Route does not go to Ogwen cottage. Yiannis
