Good luck if I don't make it myself.
" Leg 3 or 4 (or both?)" - BOTH? - Blimey lantern, have you been in secret training? ;)
seriously though, let me know if you can make 6th, 13th or 27th - logistical options are increased with 2 cars, or we could drive up together in 1 car...

Re: learning BGR sections
I used to regularly do a version of leg 3 and 4. Start at Gillercombe and follow Coast to Coast to High Raise and then BGR route all the way to wasdale and then leg 4 to honister before finishing down road via seatoller to Gillercombe. A fine day out and only misses the First section of leg 3 but allows for one car.

Lost me there Corniceman - Start at Gillercombe and Coast to Coast to High Raise? I have done High Raise via Stonethwaite/Cumbria way/Greenup Gill etc.
Would appreciate a bit more info if possible.

Re: learning BGR sections
Balin,
Sorry if not clear. I think It is called Gillercombe Farm the Campsite near Stonethwaite on the main Borrowdale Road. Basically from Stonethwaite you follow The Coast to Coast path up to Greenup Crags and then across the moor to the summit of High Raise and pick up the BGR from there on in.
Its further than it looks to HR from Stonethwaite and makes up for missing the first part of leg 3.

General Invitation To All!
I'm thinking of doing another Friday in March - either 6th, 13th or 27th
probably just do Leg2
or maybe go from Honister and do the latter half of Leg 4 and the start of Leg5
or some of Leg3...
or do a 3 Shires recce... :o
happy to go on my own, but company welcome :)
I should be out at least two of those fridays if you don't mind another tagging on?

Donkarlo - "tagging on"? - you'll be leading the way mate! ;)
All this talk of BG recce'ing has made me keen, so leaning towards earliest opportunity now - i.e. Mar.6th
I see on another thread you're intending to do Leg2 soon, so I guess you wouldn't want to do that again?
my fitness won't extend to the whole of Leg3 (esp. dropping in/out of Wasdale), but...
how about a 2-car jobby (Dunmail+Langdale) to do Leg3 as far as Bowfell...?
-
Re: learning BGR sections
Hi Daz, sounds like a plan,
Don't think I'll get too much done on Friday given conditions but Dunmail - Langdale sounds like a good idea. 6th March should be good for me too.
I'll PM you.

Re: learning BGR sections
Mislaid on Leg 1 clockwise on Friday night (3rd April) a rolled up pair of black overtrousers. Possibly lost on Skiddaw on the way down towards the trod over to Gt Calva. I'd be grateful if anyone spots them.

Re: learning BGR sections
does anyone have the distances for each leg?

Re: learning BGR sections
t'was in't pub t'other night when someone produced a "Harveys 'Bob Graham' Map" first time I've seen this but looks good with route notes on it.
It show alternative routes but not all of my route.
Any one else seen it yet?

:D First time I've seen it.
Looks like its just giving you an idea of where the route goes as the scale is too small that yellow line looks like its about 200m wide
Doesn't show my way off the pike either ;)

Re: learning BGR sections
Got shown this while in PB's last saturday - my first thought was 'oh no! why!?' but if you run a business then you look for business oppoirtunities.
It shows 'a' line... and does not even attempt to show all the alternatives that exist along the route. If you don't know the area and need something to start out with then I guess why not. But I won't be buying one!!

I've got the Borrowdale & Kentmere maps and (in my opinion) they're not that well marked either.

What does it do with Thunacar / Sergeant Man / High Raise / Calf Crag sequence?
I'm rarely on that section; what do people do? Going acw (!) last Sat we went TK - SM - HR - CC which seemed to work OK with a nice grassy descent off HR.

Going anti clock do you come off High Raise down the gill to the north of Ash crags or the ones to the south of ash crags?

I would go Birks Gill (north) south bank of gill. thats the way I went C/W I have been up deep slack but it's longer.
-
Re: learning BGR sections
Thanks Ian. I've gone down deep slack off High Raise and wondered what Birks gill (north of ash crags) was like. I did notice a trod has developed way upstream on the LH branch of deep slack when going clockwise. This heads off towards High Raise on grass at the point where you normally head for Sergeant Man.

Re: learning BGR sections
Can anybody please tell me...how easy is it to go from High Raise to Calf Crag?
This would be done and an anti-clockwise round as im sure you all know.

Head NE and down Birks gill as stated above it's easy. contour round to the path. also a good place to pick up good water.

Thankyou chaps.
And to get to Steel Fell carry on contouring.
And then down to Dunmail Raise, up to Seat Sandal and then pop up to Fairfield.....is that bit equally easy....looks fairly simple on the map.
Oh and dont worry, im not reccing for a BG attempt....just planning a "bus to the lakes Run".:)
-
Re: learning BGR sections
getting between High Raise and Steel Fell is not much problem, but if the clag is down actually finding Calf Crag can be a slight challenge (eh Karl?) :o
[Al - I've just PM'ed you]
-
eeh I forgot that i'd started this thread, some 6 years ago. I was pretty naive back then but I sure enjoyed "learning the sections" and have lost none of my BGR appetite. Happy days.
-
Yep, the very very best thing I've ever done in fell running is not the completing of my BG but the learning of the whole route.... normal way round and back to front :)
-
Im.looking forward to learning the route. Not sure if I will be having an attempt in 2015 or 2016, all depends on if I get the damn ankles sorted.
-
Hi everyone, I see this thread has been going on for a few years now but as im a new member im sure you,ll forgive me for adding to it. Im fairly new to fell running and ive had a couple of long runs (20+ miles) in the lake district. Ive done a couple of legs of the BGR but im mad keen to to learn them all or just to run in the mountains. Im lucky to be a shift worker so i get time off through the week as well as 2 weekends off a month. Im based in Bellingham northumberland and im wondering / hoping one of you kind people would be kind enough to offer me some guidance or assistance in 2015.
thanks in advance
dudley

I'd keep an eye on the Class of 2015 thread, bit quiet at the moment but it'll pick up in the new year no doubt

Hi,
