Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Hee Hee - a gear debate! my 3 cents:
cent 1 I don't think anyone is going to come to harm through lack of a hat & gloves, no matter what befalls them - litigation as a result of a yea-nay decision on that one is highly improbable.
cent 2 If the organiser has a divergent opinion, then that should be respected. It is easy enough to keep em in the sports bag year round - my bag still has crampons in it!
cent 3 The FRA should probably add hat/gloves to the list of kit one should be prepared to carry. Hard to second-guess a hassled organiser when one sniffs the air on a balmy spring morning.

Back to running...
Superb race, had probably the best race of my career, 3:16 and 13th overtaking and losing no places throughout. Hopefully made the welsh team for Slovenia..
Great event, justifiably popular, great support. Good to see a strong field. No doubt I'll do it many times yet, but doubt I'll eclipse Saturday.
Re the kit, huge field, huge area, obviously some confusion inevitable, like last years minutes silence which many of us didn't hear, these things happen, pit it to bed and look at the positives as the old guy said in his speach.

Great run Iain, hope the mrs. is ok, saw her walking back to Ribblehead.
Tried getting away from hat and gloves last night but some folk find them more interesting than the actual race:rolleyes:

The kit list should be spelt out in writing at registration and the entrants attention drawn to this. Full body cover means FULL, hands and head are as much part of the body as any other.
I have unfinished business at this race, one year I will be back.

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Yeah, her knee was going, she has a old injury sort of thing, muscle imbalance which can flare up, if she stops and gives it a day or two and stretches and does her excersises it goes away, but carrying on could have caused a longer term injury, so she called it a day, due to passport issues she can't run in Slovenia so it wasn't such a big race for her, so no poin in risking the rest of her season..
It's an event that gets under your skin, hard to get right, easy for it all to go wrong, she's had two bad ones here now so wants to go back next year..
Strangely due to reynaulds thingy I wore tshirt and gloves until ribblehead, but the was topless for the last third as it really heated up. That run off into the wind was really hard work this year. Good to see ricky get a good run and getting over his injury, awesome run by tom owens, but didn't expect robbie to be so strong at longs at such an age, seems destined to be a fell running great..

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Yes, Robbie Simpson, what is he 19? Great future ahead of him.

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Great day again although I reckon the wind didn't help times to much - perhaps others would disagree?
I found it hard going up PNG and was slower than last year maybe the wind maybe the porridge and bacon sarny for breakfast!
Got going again across to Wherneside and thankful for getting blown up the last bit. Slid down to Hill Inn in my road flats and then tried to kick on up Ingleborough. Solid run back and no cramp and fairly pleased with 3:26 but kinda felt I should have run quicker. Strong field up front but plenty to overtake on the descent as always!
Excellent prizes from Salamon for the team awards - thanks :)
Well done to the organisers - great job.

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Did PPP for the first time this year and my training plans were obliterated ankle tendonitis. Managed a couple of decent training runs in the last two months only for the ankle to flare and take me out again for a few weeks. Most of my hill training was on bicycle rather than in walshes! Lined up on saturday feeling okay but with expectations (hopes?) of just staying inside the cut offs and trying to get under 5 hours maybe. Took everything steady up penyghent (~500th at the top) and reminded myself to ease off over to ribblehead whenever I felt that I was putting in any effort (~450th? - I'm sure I kept getting overtaken by the rampant road runners sprinting this section?). Two bananas, a sports drink and a lot of wind powered me up Whernside (~400th), and I quite enjoyed that decent until hitting the tarmac (boo!) to Hill Inn (~350th). Almost had my shin pierced by a runner who had taken poles with him for getting up Inglebugger but managed to side step him to the summit (~300th). Jumped off the top and found a few quicker routes to the right of the path at the top and fought through the cramping legs (could feel the lack of long run training here) to finish just under 4.15 in 264th. Well chuffed.
Was amazed at the number of marshals and the general organisation - felt more like a Salomon or similar event than a fell run (kept expecting a cargo net or river crossing to be around the corner!). May or may not be back next year as I've put in for London and would also like to do Teenager With Altitude at some point. Too many races!
Next stop - Isle of Jura - oops!

I know her, she's called Leanne. She had a bad fall coming down from Ingleborough. Bloodied but unbowed she carried on and was still in high spirits when I saw her in the medical tent.
I finished in 4:34 which I would have been disappointed with a couple of weeks ago. But I'd been struggling with my knee for the previous two weeks and wasn't sure I was even going to run until Friday. So I'm happy just to have got round. I took a couple of tumbles myself in the last few miles but suffered nothing worse than a grazed knee (my good one). I was very touched by the runners who stopped to make sure I was alright both times.

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Fantatsic day on Saturday.
Really enjoyed the race up Penyghent, onto Ribblehead and up Whernside, and even up to Ingleborough I was really enjoying it, but from then on its got really tough, and that last long run down back to Horton, bloody 'ell it goes on forever, just as your legs are bolloxed 'n all. Got a PB tho so it was all worth it. Could've done with it been a bit less windy tho, but hey, its the 5th time I've done it and every time the weather's been great, one of these years it's gonna be horrendous, were certainly due atrocius conditions, thankfully it wasn't Saturday.
Presentation was enjoyable and emotional also, with great speeches from Allan Greenwood and first 3 peaks winner Fred Bagley.
Also enjoyed the live band, a shame more people didn't stay for them, but they were good, hats off to the dancers on the tables at the front, very entertaining.
A Big Thank You to all the organisers for a wonderful day, and congratulations to all finishers.

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
I loved the whole thing. Went steady all the way round. No probs with the hills and still felt fine at the top of Ingleborough. It was the headwind to the finish that was tough for me. Got in in 4 hours dead. I'll try a bit harder on the flat bits next year and see if I can improve. Thanks for all advice
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Donkey, you were just behind me then. I was 3.59:23. We must have been struggling together at some point on Sulber Nik ! I've looked at my splits & I lost most places on the flats & then made them up on the climbs.

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Well, we're just back from a great weekend in Horton. Arrived on Thursday for the pre race "preparation" in the pub. Great weather but the wind could have died down a bit!!
Really enjoyed the race, & took 7 minutes off lasts years time, finishing in 4.17.02, although until the Hill Inn I was well down on time, proving the race starts at Whernside, as I knew last year but chose to ignore!!!
I'm not going to get into a slanging match re: kit requirements, save for saying that if I'd had to withdraw on the top of Whernside, I reckon I'd have needed my hat & gloves to stay anything like warm on the way back down!
A big thanks to all marshalls & race organisers, a top quality event again. Special mention has to go to the fine lady at the top of the waterfall on Ingleborough with the big box of sour jellies. I can't even remember if they were cherries or strawberries, but by then I was sick to death of sweet stuff, they were ace!! I nearly detoured on the way back down to get more, so if it was you Thank You (ps what were they, I'm going to get some!)
Had a recovery walk up PyG yesterday, I think it was even windier than Saturday, but at least I had time to look at the view!
Roll on next year, 4.15 maybe???

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
I'm tempted to go back in a few weeks and redo it just to slay those demons. Can anybody recommend a way to get onto winterscales pasture as close to the race route as possible without upsetting anyone? (Stolly I'm looking at you)
ps, AS - don't even start
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Just checked my split times from when I did the race last,2009.......everyone is within a couple of seconds the same......Ingleborough is exactly the same, but I was 2 seconds slower at the finish.Thought that dibber box was a bit further back this year.........

Instead of crossing the stream, carry on round through the farm and about 200m past the farm there's a path up to the top of Whernside that runs around 300m west of the race route.
It's on the OS and is almost the same profile as the race route.

It was at least 5 metres behind the line :O
The guy who just beat me by a metre was given "=467th" so "Lee Dunn - unattached" I'd just like to publicly congratulate you for out jogging me in to the finish :D

Why would I start, you are an adult responsible for your own choices. You trespass to your hearts content, potentially spoiling it for the rest of us - just don't forget your hat and gloves.

You can more or less follow the race route exactly without trespassing - its all open access. Or you can head further down and follow the footpath that runs straight up parallel to a dry stone wall - this takes you out to the left of the summit though on the ridgeline. (Don't listen to AS as he knows sweet FA about this neck of the woods ;)).

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Hiya Steve, hope your back and crushed bits are recovered.:) I was interested in the stats too and have the same tactics as you ie, I run how I feel and I felt good on Saturday. Didn't fall (amazing...have been so clumsy lately). I've now got a throat infection so I'm chuffed that didn't kick in fully until Sunday.

Not really my tactics, tend to run how i feel, but set off steady, felt good at Hill Inn and pushed it from there. Ingleborough to finish was hard into that wind though and took a tumble near Sulber Nick, no cuts but a nice big bruise on my back today and my legs snapped together when i landed crushing my you know whats!
Hes's stats will be the same as she caught me at Hill Inn and was a second behind me at the finish, don't think she fell though and if she did she wouldn't have crush injuries!

I have been told by several forumites that you think you both own the dales and know more about them than anyone else - to the point that when you talk about this people have to put their ears to your arse to hear your clearly, are you confirming this to be the case?
