Good luck to everyone, see you all on race day.:)
This is will be my first attempt at 3 Peaks, was talking to the organisers in the pub the night before last years race and fancied having a go at it after I'd downed several pints, and one year later I'm actually gonna do it, or at least try to. Been training quite hard for my standard but I'm from Hull where it's as flat as a fart so training has been awkward. Run for Fenner Flyers, a small running club in Hull which mainly does road racing but fancied something different. Last Fell race was Winter Hill which I found really tough, been trying to do plenty of long runs since then but struggling to get much hill work done. I know I'm gonna struggle.
Hi, i fancy having a trot around the course in the next couple of months and just wanted to check one part of the route. It concerns just the small section coming off PYG, around Sell Gill Holes to the Peninne Way.
Is it a right of way, is there a path?
thanks in advance
I seem to remember a path. Have you seen Pike's excellent map? :)
There are some much more knowledgeable people on here who should know and who could help one of the first people to sign up to the very first version of this forum back in September 2004. :)
ta
i have printed off the excellent map and loking forward to a good beasting
:D
...and how interesting/sad that you remember me posting from the 'old days', although i did post more as 'drallop' then too. i haven't really done much fell running for a while now (kept buggering up my ankle ligaments) but i'm planning on doing a 45mile run along the Ridgeway in June and need to get some quality miles in my legs, so where better than the PPP's!:)
Anyone doing another Reccie of this one soon? Don't really fancy working out 24 miles on my own and would like to run it before the day!
Anybody fancy a run on Saturday ?
Is there a list of this years runners and riders anywhere ?
Can any coaches recommend the taper for 3 Peaks on 29th?
Long run 15th = ? miles
Long run 22nd = ? miles
Week leading up to 29th?
had a good run round yesterday. VERY sunburnt though.
Questions
1) I wondered if there was a way of going diagonally off the main bridleway/path and past the farms before Nether Lodge? I think this is what Pike indicates in his map? I stuck to the path until the signpost to Nether lodge itself. Wondered if there was a quicker and more direct way.
2) At what point do you cross the stream for ascending Whernside. Is there a best line to follow up there? (Not that I went up there of course....)
Cheers :)
1) Not sure which bit you mean but it is mostly on good tracks and it is pretty direct so can't see where you would find a short cut. The route is usually well laid out with out too many route choices.
2) After going through the tunnel head up slightly and cross the stream anywhere,There is a Marshal here usually. Be careful crossing the stream it is usually very slippy  After that look up. Yep you've got to go that way:eek:
is anyone planning on a reccy on the morning off mon 16th? ive booked sometime of work and was planning on doing some of route
Thanks Ian
I did do the race last year. Just looking for alternatives this time round!
with not long to go, i wondered how people were going to start tappering down for the race, i appreciate there is an individualistic element to it, but im also interested in how what training and how much people will do over the next week or so?
I've certainly started my taper. I am a little anxious about mileage in my legs, given I've only done 1 20 miler and that not on hills, but it's too late now!:o Will do a few 6 milers before now and the race. I'm guessing at doing it in about 4.30?? Planning to wear Mizuno wave harriers. At least with 600 entrants, there shouldn't be any problem finding the way! What do people think about water? Am I right in thinking there is in fact some water available en route and that it might not even be from the traditional stream? If so, do I risk it without my camelbak thingy? Should be a great day!
All my taper involves is no doing a session on the thursday before and replacing it with a run. I tapered for my marathon but I' just going to see what happens with this one. My mileage isn't mega so I'm not sure it will impact that much anyway.
i think the water is at ribblehead and then just after the pub at the foot of ingleborough. you can have drinks/food sent to these two places. there are a few streams along the way, but if your not sure where they are its a big risk not taking fulid with you. i found a new stream one on the way down off ingleborough on mon, id run out of water after doing pen y ghent then up to ingleborough. race day i usually take a bottle of water with me and then get more from the stations. never used a camelbak, but have thought about it.
No taper for me, BGR training means doing the three peaks whilst already knackered. THat's a perfect start line excuse right there. I might take a couple of days off before but I need to keep the 10,000' a week quota up.
Not sure how much a taper is of benefit anyway. I've tapered for races and then not done so in future years and found that it didn't make much difference. Not suggesting tapering is bad, but much of how you do in long races is in your head i reckon...
Good luck everyone
ST
I cannot be arsed carrying one of those camelback things.
I'll set off with a Lucozade pouch which will do for Penygent.Have my 2 bottles ( with a banana elastic-banded to each one ) delivered to drinks points. Keep my second empty bottle to refill in the stream at the foot of Ingleborough. Sorted !! :D
You and me both ST, after 15 trigs allowed myself 2 days off, Did 10 miles last night, will do same tonight, Take Friday off, 6-7 hours in Wales on Sat helping out on a PB recce, walk with family on Sunday, taper down with a gentle run on wed. then rest for Three Peaks.
This BG thing is very committing (or I need it) It just seems to be train, train, train :(
Staying in Ingleton this coming weekend for our Fenner Flyers annual weekend away in the dales. Bad timing really, could have done it to have been 2 weeks before 3 Peaks. Haven't done much this week as I'll be doing a bit over next few days, probably covering quite a few miles. Did 10 on Wednesday, 8 last Monday and 14 on the Staurday. Going to recce part of the coures, want to do the first climb from Horten up Peny Ghent and across to Ribblehead, also doing a few other shorter runs, but don't want to knacker myself out too much. Out of 15 of us going to Ingleton there's only 2 of us doing the race next weekend so we'll be holding back a little, maybe. Next week I'll do 8 on Tuesday and 5 on Thursday and that'll do me, fingers crossed. Wer'e from Hull where it's flat as a pankake so God knows how we'll manage to complete the course, but we''l give it a good go.
Did 20 miles on Wednesday, bit of hill work tonight, probabably half a dozen 5 mins circuits. Bit more hill work Monday and an easy 8 miler or so on Wednesday. Coming up from the flats of Essex, will make it but i will be the one wheezing at the back.
The old man is poised like a coiled spring and ready to lay the ghost of his previous attempt. Fair stands the wind for Horton-in-Ribblesdale.
Woof!
Yes, on the website
silly question i know - but what time does it start?:o
cheers - I remebered that i had the fra calendar after that i had posted my question too, by the way - long range weather forecast that i have just seen for next sunday is hot hot hot! 21C and sunny!
I guess the current record holder won't be there next week, after finishing 103rd with 2:37:18 at the London Marathon today.
