I went to bed about 10.15, and unsurprisingly managed about 6 hours sleep between then and 7 this morning. What's the secret to getting to sleep when you know you really have to so your brain won't switch off? :(
On the plus side, I guess I'll sleep well tomorrow night...

You and me both. Its nice to think I can spend all day flopped on the sofa but the temptation to play killzone 2 rather than doze is always there. I'm going for the big sleep on saturday plan I think............ hopefully not while driving back from Edale!!

Well I was out late the night before on a search and I had 2 bottles of Rescue Ale before I went to bed last night, I fell asleep before I'd even turned the light out:D

Plugging that Rescue Ale again! Dont forget a couple of cases for me tonight Ian.
Do you think they'd mind if we started the HPM a bit early, like, now? The weather's fantastic and I'm having difficulty concentrating on work!

Saw a lot through at Snake summit, one or two obvious face plants.
Weather over night was claggy making navigation "exciting". Heavy underfoot conditions tough.
Well done to all.

Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Forgot to mention I picked up a red glove in Hern Clough and handed it to the marshals a Snake summit.

Well done Team Girlie Wurleys:cool:
Believe they had a Fell Pony and a Calder Valley Girlie Wurly in their ranks;)

Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Found that really hard going, Not sure what I expected but found it tough to say the least. Thankfully with a team who knew the route well so the only thing to worr about was keeping going.
Weather worse than expected.

Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Well.......... that was a peat fest and no mistake. Our team finished on a disappointing 13:10 as one of our team members wasn't quite honed to HPM perfection ;). We also went on a two mile detour in the zero visibilty overnight and then trusted IanDarkPeak (whose team we bumped into) to take us through the famed 'north west passage' off of Bleaklow... which he did but just not in any way that could adequately be called a short cut :D
The terrain just has to be the toughest there is; its not about climbs but just mounds and mounds and mounds and mounds and mounds of peat!
-
Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Iain you went like a train - it was great to have you on the team.
-
Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Well done to all you HPMers.
Well done to the Vasque winners but nice work by the High Peak Rollerbladers- you all looked very fresh within spitting distance of the finish.
Again, well done all.
-
Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Cheers Grouse, I thought it went well, we all seemed to have low points at different times which meant there was always someone to keep the pace going and push us on. From 3 am until the Snake I wasn't feeling too good at all but was just too scared to lose sight or I'd still be up there now..awesome knowledge of the route.
-
Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Great running by the HP Rollerbladers! Fantastic effort sounds like you pushed the Vasque North guys, I never cease to be amazed by your knowledge of the area! Almost tempting me to do it again sometime...

Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Good to spend a few hours with Stolly today, Also had a chat with IaiR course was decidedly wet and the visibility was totally zero around Back Tor and MH, There were runners every where. I'm glad I was a local.
Thanks to the thirsty runners today who bought 14 cases of the the 'Ale' making just over £110 for MR funds

Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
oops bad form
many thanks to Filthy Rich and his team for organising this :( I think
It is a special event and the marshalls are always chirpy and they need to be to be stationed in the middle of know where usually it bad conditions getting no sleep for the best part of the day.
Cheers Guys

Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Overnight weather was fairly persistent drizzle and/or hill fog.
The bog monster was on holiday.
We didn't come last (but it was close).
Time for bed...

Let's face it, Julien is like the human map when it comes to Bleaklow. I bet they never got the paper map out. Well done guys.

Not once.
amazing on such featureless terrain, there's seemed just nothing to navigate off from after sheep fold clough to bleaklow.

My guide: Keep the edge of the ridge to your left ;).
I must admit I'm really glad I'de reccee'd all of that in daylight including the gully route up Bleaklow. I don't think the 'north west passage' is any quicker than following the stakes through the peat maze though. Even though my team may not necessarily have had any confidence in me I sort of felt I knew where the hell I was going last night.

You want to watch that beer, Ian. Tastes great, but after a couple of bottles last night I had this nightmare about wading through freezing cold treacle, in the dark, pursued by dozens of people wearing head torches. Bizarre. Must be something to do with the brewing process. What do you think?

Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
I was injured so we drafted in a replacement. They seemed to do fine - less than 1 min slower than last year, so pretty good considering there were two replacements in there.

Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Wow, what a race. Thanks to all of the organisers who put so much effort into making this event a success.
Thanks also to Margery Hill for her endless hospitality keeping us gainfully occupied during those wee early hours in the mist :) I think I'm going to sign up for a navigation refresher course...
-
Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Thanks for the beer Ian. Could have done with that at at a few of the checkpoints to dull the pain. After popping Ibuprofen for 24 hours once it wears off you suddenly realise that your body is f@@@@d and that you really arent that fit after all !!
Well done to everyone who helped organise and marshall the event and congratulations to everyone who finished it. It is truly a great race, just wish they'd made some reference to the distance on the T-Shirts, just saying its a marathon is misleading and they could be up for breaking 'trade description laws' !!!

As predicted, it had long gone by the time those of us who really needed it arrived. As indeed had all the food :(
We started off well, and by the time we got to Moscar there was actually one team who hadn't overtaken us (they passed us at Cut Gate). And it felt quite good on Margery Hill as we overtook 2 teams back, who were obviously lost, they followed us to Cut Gate and promptly passed us again :)
We were still not far behind several other teams at this point, and we had vague hopes of catching up again after Snake Pass - we'd gone for a slow start hoping to have more energy left for the last section. Unfortunately some rather unpleasant blisters put paid to this, and we were delighted just to finish.
I was pleasantly surprised that it was far drier underfoot and with fewer bogs than expected, based on our recce a few weeks ago, and the Cut Gate to Bleaklow section actually took us less time than it had in the daylight.
I was even more surprised that I found myself enjoying most of it, even without the benefit of hindsight. I may have to find 3 new team members for the next one though!
If anyone lost a head torch somewhere on Howden Edge, I found one and handed it to the organisers at the end.

Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Huge thanks to the guy we met on kinder who gave us apple pies as we hobbled on. That's pretty much all I can remember, think my mind has blanked out all the pain already
-
Re: High Peak Marathon Marchis
Big thanks to the organisers for putting on such an excellent event and providing such unfailingly cheery helpful marshalls. My first time but I'll definitely be back, lottery permitting :)
It was nice to meet IanDP and the team - those headtorches were amazing! When I saw you closing in on us I initially thought 'bit far inland for a lighthouse'.
