I don't. They were bought in 1983 specifically for racing XC in the Gruenewald in Berlin (little stipply sole). Also good on sand and snow.
The original sole started to peel away at mile 23 in the Blubberhouses 25 a couple of years ago. This caused me to slow down so much that Jez nearly caught up with me (but not quite, ha!).
Lovely sunny day in Jockland. Good luck to all 3P'ers.

Some strange results throughout. Looked like times were comparable.. winner 2:55, winner 2011 2:53.. and that was Tom Owens, who was a lot slower this year.. some very good runners slower than you'd expect. Top 10 times were similar 2011 - 2012.. last year it was dry but fairly warm, this year it must have been wetter underfoot..

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
I was at the road shouting at people, from what i can remember...
1 Joe Symonds
2 Carl Bell
3 Rob Baker
4 Ricky Lightfoot
5 Karl Gray
6 Andy Davies
7 Rob Jebb
8 Tom Owens
9 ?
10 Graham Pearce
Good runs also from Mounsey and Watto, Watto got pipped in the final 50yds by someone who may have been Andrew Jebb.

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
It was bloody windy and as a consequence was real chilly. It was carnage on the top of Whernside with the charity walk and the Fellsman going on as well. I felt a tad sorry for the runners as they may not have had a clear off. I bailed off the top and was at the gate at the base of Whernside and the runners looked great today. I went up the race route of Whernside this morning, bananas...I am in awe of you guys and gals who can go this. Me? I am just trying to qualify. Who knows.

Underfoot conditions seemed to make little difference imho. It's so bloody rocky that there were only a few squelchy bits and very few boggy spots to slow us down (with the honourable exception of the leg-swallower at the foot of whernside!) It was the wind - especially in your face all the way off ingleboro to horton - that slowed many down. Tho somehow I was faster. Go figure! Great day as usual Thx to all organisers and marshalls Seamless!

There were some exceedingly muddy runners coming through, although more curiously the walkers appeared to be muddier than the runners. Weren't they on roughly the same route??

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Just checked out today's HBT winners on Power of 10 and yes, they've got form!
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Decided - very much last minute - to go for mudclaws in the end; no regrets. Was far wetter than any of the previous 4 years. As for the headwind between PYG and Whernside ....
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
You can't beat that turnaround at the top of Ingleborough & greeting from a gust of wind. Great day, throroughly enjoyed it.
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Pics from Ingleborough and Whernside at www.sportsunday.co.uk P Y G and finish first thing tomorrow.
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Wasn't it pretty windy last year to? Mud caught me out today though so it was an early return to the finsh for me.
It was good to watch the end for a change. Would have been better to finish mind!!
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
It was windier last year, amazingly !
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
This was my 4th in the last 5 years.
It was the toughest. The brick wall wind was against you all the way up PYG and then also partially on the run off. It was then across you for much of the run to Ribblehead and all the way down off Ingleborough.
Up Whernside, it was from the right, my right leg went numb by the top and the only help the wind gave me was blowing me down Whernside.
It must have been gusting to force 8 at times.
I can't believe the leaders times. I really wouldn't have expected anyone to break 3 hours today. Besides the wind, it was squelchy in parts and the run of Ingleborough was treacherous although perhaps us tailebders got worse underfoot conditions as 500 had already passed by.
I didn't know about the charity walk, but I did find more ignorant walkers out there today than in any of the other races. They usally took the best lines and walked 3 or 4 abreast taking up the whole track.
There was one guy towards the top of Whernside. I doubt he should even have been there as it's not a public right of way, but he was in the way.
I was also part of a group that was held up as a rescue helicopter landed just off the summit of Whernside. I hope the casualty is OK. Not sure if it was a runner or not.
Thanks to all the marshalls. I wouldn't have liked to have spent 3 hours on Ingleborough today - although the views were unbelievable.
I'm just happy to have got around today - that was tough.
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Great day out and knocked 18 mins of my previous time, many thanks to the lady playing the tin whistle on the approach to Ingleborough, made me smile for long enough to forget the encroaching cramp.
Many thanks to all involved in making the event happen.
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
well I finished with a PB (only by 4 minutes) and I have done the last 5 years and agree this was the hardest. this is the fittest i have been for a 3 peaks and whilst I still cannot break the time i wanted i am sure I would have gone backwards if I was not as fit.
Impressed with Carl Bell and he is sure to be a multiple winner of the future, spoke to Robb Jebb as well after the race and he is a super guy but prefers the harder races or two wheels. agree with above post as to how they did those times today.
right training starts tomorrow for next year!!!
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
I thought the wind this year was a lot less strong than last year, but it was more gusty and there were more sections where the wind was in your face.
Remember that last year, it was almost impossible to stand up straight, never mind run with the wind coming across you going up Whernside. I couldn't stay on the side of the path I was trying to. This year I had no problems.
I was taking off my hat and gloves/putting them back on again more times than I could count! The temperature difference between the peaks and the valleys was amazing (especially coming off PYG).
Personally, I am still bouncing off the walls! 41mins quicker than last year, although a huge chunk of that was accounted for the fact that last year I was vomiting all the way up Ingleborough. This year, I struggled on the same peak (especially the run-off - with cramp after running London last week), but wasn't ill this year, so enjoyed it a great deal more!
Club mate had an even better run - taking 28mins off his time last year to go sub-4. An absolutely stunning run!
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Well done everyone today, some excellent times given the conditions. Fantastic run from Pattinson the 3peaks machine. I ran most of the course with him a few weeks ago and he's a beast on the climbs.
I gather the air ambulance was for a fellsman competitor with a suspected ankle fracture so fingers crossed its not too major.
I'll be there next year no doubt for a good crack at it.
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Oh, and according to @Fellrunninbrief the runner taken off Whernside by the air ambulance was doing the Fellsman - suspected broken leg unfortunately

Cave rescue incident report says ankle injury. Hopefully it's not too serious
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Well I had a shocker, some 10 mins down on last year and can't really think of a reason why. Legs felt wrecked afterwards.
Felt like I was running OK until I fell in that maneating bog on Whernside and felt a slight pull in the right calf which began to cramp up a little on the descent, but other than that was just slow!
Thanks to all involved with marshalling and race organisation, superbly organised as usual

If you're going to sustain an injury on Whernside, that's the perfect moment to do it: help was available from all quarters.

I wasn't saying that was strange.. never heard of her.. but that means nothing.. but just that you had class runners like Owens well off.. overall the top 10 were very similar to last year.. and last year was a qualifier for almost all home nations.. but I'd have finished lower down I think this year.. think I was 3:16 and 14th..something like that..
But the three peaks is like that for strange results.. I beat Jebby last year.. and Andy Peace.. you always get a few 'scalps'.. but you can't count them as you know they went for it and it didn't come off.. its just strange seeing top runners so far down or off their pace.. the three peaks seems to do that more than any other.. and tbh I think Mouncey's 3:25? was poor for him. I've never beaten him before.. and possibly would have today.. Rich another one.. I reckon both are sub 3:10 runners.. they have pace I don't have..
Last year was strange conditions, but wind in your face for one section means wind at your back in others.. like Snowdonia Marathon.. like last year.. so its hard to work out what the net effect was...

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
I must admit I put plenty of layers on with hat & gloves. I was amazed at how many runners were wearing just vests !

Well done, Jez. Good time. I wouldn't have made the first cut-off in my current state.

Me too, would have perished on Whernside in a vest! Having said that I did like the numbing feeling of the cold wind on my legs because it meant I couldn't feel how achey they were!
26 minutes faster than last year (and 400 places higher, weird!) so I'm pretty chuffed. Did it in 4:23. Aiming for sub-4 next year!

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Great race :-)
Wind wise it was similar to last year, a strong headwind up P-Y-G, then the 8mile to Ribblehead was all headwind, sidewind up Whernside. The least wind section was from foot of Whenside descent to Ingleborough summit but the wind from there to the finish was bad!!!! allso much wetter/muddier underfoot this year, sure we had a 20hr gap in the weather but the ground stays the same as if it were still raining.
My race and time????? bitter/sweet realy ;-) having turned up last year with no training at all (except a 24mile run the weekend before just to see if i could last the distance) i came in 28th with 3:25:05.
This year i turned up race primed and a few good 20-25 miler in the legs and scraped 23rd and 3:24:30!!!!!!!!! CRAZY in my opinion, all them miles for 35secs????? so to me this year was tougher, up to the last mile and a half i was on for sub 3:20 but the headwind down the "so-called" descent of Ingleborough ;-) litterally killed me.
Overall, happy to beat last year's time, claimed a few good scalps, but I know I could of gone better :-)
Amazing support out on course and the marshalling was awsome. Thanks to all involved.

Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
Just back from a "hair of the dog" run consisting of 2 laps of the local playing fields on jellied legs - heaven knows what the dog walkers must have thought.....
Yesterday was bloody hard work - was going Ok up to Ribblehead but had no energy whatsoever on the climb up Whernside, did have 1 or 2 moments where I thought it would put me out of my misery if I didn't make the Hill Inn cut off but then with the encouragement of my fellow back markers & 1 or 2 spectators pushed on to make it with less than 2 mins to spare. Think I was the last to leave the checkpoint after having a comfort break. Pleased to see the lady with the recorder on the way up to Inglebugger - brought a smile to my very weary face. Finished with a pw - but heck who cares - got round 1 of the most prestigous races in the calender.
Thank you to all the marshalls, support & cameraderie of fellow runners. A pleasure to meet Witton Park - initially to point out my flat tyre (!), fellow forumites and my pit stop crew for assisting in replacing aformentioned tyre after the finish.
Good to see / hear the injured fellsman person was being looked after, with nothing too serious - relatively speaking.
-
Re: Three Peaks Fell Race
My first 3-peaks (first time i've ever been up any of them, which is an achievement in itself given i've lived in yorkshire all my 30year life). I died (not literally, like gafrymynydd claims) at the top of Ingleborough, and as a result just missed out on my 3.30 target by a few minutes. Still pretty pleased given my lack of experience and training for long races.
Thanks to all the marshalls/helpers. i tried smile/thank/thumbs up all i saw, but any after ingleborough probably just got blanked. sorry.

Glad to hear you can run pal :)
I can't - huge blister on the ball of my right heel :(
That tempo down the last mile of Wherside wasn't helpful at all was it - but a big relief when we got in :)
To anyone who doesn't appreciate how tough it was yesterday, of course I'm just a steady plodder - but my 3 previous efforts have been comfortably inside the cut offs - 20mins - 30 mins with a finishing time of 4:40-4:45 - there were a lot timed out this year and some of them previous finishers.
Perhaps the run off PYG added a couple of minutes and made it tighter. The wind perhaps another couple of minutes and then the underfoot similar. Even the traffic on course - there were so many walkers this year I had to go off the main trod quite often - each time you're doing that you lose efficiency and lose time.
It was bloody hard. But also rewarding knowing that I dug as deep as I could to get down that last section of Whernside just to be able to complete again and managed with 57s to spare.
Big up to the other guys that I came down with as we encouraged each other and the supporters at the side for the encouragement.

Hate to introduce a negative to such a positive thread but yet again we had quite a few gate climbers at the stiles at around the 8 mile point .....
