Not much chance of me insulting you merry - we might share hair styles but I'm considerably lardier than you ;)

Okay my preparation for this couldn't have been more last minute - I had to buy an OMM back pack, a plastic mug and a spork yesterday and have now sat down trying to plot my route (or possible route) between checkpoints.
The first obvious gap in my knowledge is the line off of Whernside to Yorda's Cave. I know the stile to hop over, a couple of hundred metres down from Whernside trig, which puts me into a large open fell side - I suspect there's no advantage in aiming a true diagonal to Yorda's, which would probably require hopping a wall, but is it best to hack in a line for the farm at Kingsdale Head and then follow the road or to just go straight down due east to the road? Its obviously not that important but I must put my dotted line on the map properly :rolleyes:
I'm okay on the line down into Dent and intend to follow the same line to Flinter Gill off of Great Coum that I did at last years Whernside fell race. I'm okay to Blea Moor too I think, following the track that skirts the north end of the Whernside ridge, but presumably hacking off in a straightish line south west for Blea Moor when the track turns south? After that to be honest the map doesn't look too bad with obvious or as the crow flies hops, looking okay to wing on the day, between fairly closely grouped checkpoints.
But is there anywhere else I need to worry about on the navigational front?
Sorry I've just noticed the section in the manual "points to observe on the route" which gives me all sorts of navigational instructions!
99% of the navigational prlblems will come after Fleet Moss - looks straightforward on the map but unless you are quick you will find yourself on open fell in the dark - thats when GPS can help !
Unless you are well in front there should be few problems navigating the bits before Dent as there will always be someone around you.
OK i have got my route plotted and it shows 59.6 miles and 11500ft of asent is that sounding about right?.
This weeks forecast makes it look like Fleet moss could be heavy going:D
See you at the weekend folks.

Weather forecast for this week in Settle:
Today ---> Heavy rain
Wednesday ---> Heavy rain
Thursday ---> Sunny intervals
Friday ---> Light rain
Saturday ---> Light rain with a max temperature of 11 degrees
Continuing my make it up as I go along organisation for this, any chance of cadging a lift with someone from Threshfield to Ingleton on Saturday morning? I don't mind getting there at the crack of dawn.
planning route and i cant find hell gap on map, or at least its name, is this right, what ive got is a point NE of west fell above stake moss, does this seem right? dave
Hi dave that's it.
Follow fence line from Yockenthwaite (very boggy and tough under foot. get past here by dark if possible) to South grain tarn over fence as it turns North I seem to remember. and follow bearing as you go over the first rise you should see flashing beacons leading you all the way. take a bearing as they disapear from time to time. CP on the track which you then just follow all the way down to Hellgap proper and the next CP at Cray and hopefully grouping.
This is the last tough climb.
good luck
cheers again ian for info, hopefully it go ok, starting to get nervous if i think about it, thought something like 3 p's or edale looked daunting
I've had a bit of a panic. Studied the instructions last night and read that printed maps wouldn't do (I got away with them last year). Found the requisite maps in the third and last shop. All a bit pointless in time and expense as I'll only use my printed ones anyway. But rules are rules, even if arbitrary, I s'pose.

Plea for help...
Well, only a few days to go. There are a few places (<20) still available so get those entry forms in if you want a secure place as any remaining places on the Saturday will be on a strict first-come first-serve basis. I will be posting some information tonight regarding kit check, buses, opening and closing times for check-in and reminders of the ever unpopular grouping rule which the committee takes VERY seriously!
In the meantime I've had a plea for help from an entrant based in Harrogate who is looking for a car share from Threshfield to Harrogate on the Sunday due to the very poor public transport on Sundays. He can also offer a lift from Harrogate to the start on the Saturday morning. If anybody feels that they can help please contact me via the Contact page and I'll put you in touch.
Thanks and watch this space.
fleetmoss looked quite dry yesterday, let's hope it doesn't rain too much between now and then!
don't mind the forecast, got to be better than roast and burn of last year.
entry no 28, see you there.
I'm worried about my 'Large See-through Polythene Bag' that I must put my mandatory kit in. Will it be large enough? will it be see-through enough?
Is anybody kipping at the school on Friday or are we all going up at silly O'Clock on Saturday?
I tried to convert my Ford Fiesta to a camper van last night, hoping that I could sleep in it as a contingency. T'would be uncomfortable to say the least.
Yeah I too am having some 'what the donald duck am I doing this for' moments this week. But death before dishonour! ;)
Personally I'd go for dishonour everytime.
large see through poly bag, didnt realise it had to be see through??
nerves def here, lost sleep last night worrying about it, why oh why, im sure there must be a nice flat 10k race somewhere i can run instead!
Right i'm going to start a torch debate (probably with myself).
Rules state it can't be single led type. Diameter of lens can't be less than 30mm. So this rules out my petzl myo. I've got a Hope 2 led torch but no spare rechargeable Lion battery for it. It'll last 30 hours on full charge. But rules state spare batteries must be carried. Oh it's 50quid for a spare and i don't want to pay that. How strict are they on all of this?
Don't worry too much about the torch I am sure they accepted myo's in the past think if you go back on this thread you will find evidence.
It will be fine, the rules are a guidance I am sure the bag doesn't have to be clear I've always just used a bin liner.:) Don't panic its fine you will enjoy it and soon relax into the Fellsman pace when you are on the move.;)
I find the whole kit check thing very stressful. One would always like to think that the officials will apply common sense, but there's always the nagging worry that you could get disqualified on the start line. :(
The actual race itself doesn't cause me any worries (apart the fear of being grouped - I must, must must get to Park Rash by 7.30 :eek:)
