Anybody watching this?
Cream, Hendrix, Stones, Who.......
This is tremendous stuff.
Tonight......Velvets, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Roxy Music, Genesis.......
Just brilliant. Even kept Wheeze out of the pub!
no, it didn't. when is it repeated?:o
Tomorrow night I think!
Just watched it. I guess you have to be of a certain age but the vintage velvets/bowie/floyd/genesis just transported me back to those incredibly exciting early teen years. WOW! Kids of today...what do they have that comes anything as close?
I am now flooded with memories of Brut, flares, cheesecloth shirts, Freeman Hardy and Willis platforms, zits, two stroke exhaust and ultraviolet lights for the last snog!:p
I think this series could prove to be a bit expensive becuase it either reminds you of an old vynl album you haven't played for a while and must know go get on CD (in my case Velvets, Roxy Music) and some bands that I never realy heard properly before (Genisis & early Pink Floyd). Can any body suggest the best Genisis CD to buy?
I thought it was ok Toffer, though i do think they overplayed the influence of Roxy Music and Genesis a bit.
Don't get me wrong I've nothing against either of them. In fact i admit to quite liking the Gabriel-era Genesis when I was a nipper, but unlike Floyd/Velvet Underground/Bowie (and those highlighted last week) they didn't exactly do anything that important in the history of music.
Martin, you can't go wrong with 'Seconds Out', a double live LP of the best of their early work. It is that rare beast, a live recording that generally sounds better than the studio versions, all the more remarkable because it is post Gabriel with Collins doing a credible job in his pre-mawkish days.
Of the original early albums, Selling England By The Pound is tops for me. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is an epic piece but a bit more of an acquired taste.
Danbert, before last nights programme, I would have tended to agree with you about Genesis. A bit like a damp sunday afternoon in Bognor...terribly english but somewhat wet, grey and depressing. But after seeing that remarkable footage of Gabriel at the peak of his costume phase, they certainly had something. He presaged New Romantic face painting by 10 years and Wayne Coyne's onstage theatrics and love of the bizarre by 25 years. Anyone who likes Elbow will find much to admire and any bands that play to a classical structure will have to admit to the Genesis influence.
Post Gabriel, I agree, they sank into a tacky commercial mess with only a few highlights after Trick of The Tail.
As regards Roxy Music, I'll take a firm stand here. They were absolutely brilliant, exciting and unique. They created the bedrock for a whole raft of music, style and creativity that few, if any other, bands have matched before or since. Like Genesis, their flame burned brightest for a brief early period during the Ferry/Eno years but if I had been blessed with any musical talent Roxy would definately have been an inspiration to get up on stage and just do it.
Imagine, seeing Virginia Plain and Starman for the first time on TOTP. It was heady stuff, I can tell you!
That's a fair assessment Wheeze ;)
As the show is moving onto punk next week, It looks like they're going to skip Led Zeppelin all together. How can that be?
You can't talk about the history of rock and not mention Led Zeppelin, that's like talking about the history of Fell Running and not mentioning Joss Naylor
Is that true? They are ignoring Led Zepp?!! Thats a bigger travesty than an FRA 'ballot' paper!!!!
Don't fret.. see the BBC website
Looking at the programme listings, it looks like Zepp are only afforded a cursory glance at best instead of being accorded an entire programme to themselves which would be the only way to cope with the MAMMOTH contribution they have made!
Oh Travesty, Oh Injustice!!!
Thanks for the Genisis suggestions guys,
Brett, if you read this can we have an album reviews section on the forum:D .
Agree completely with the comments re Led Zepplin, cant beleive they are going to get tucked away on the heavey rock week. I think we should get a movement going to to encourage fell runners to boycott the BBC until this is corrected, possibly a sub committee to investigate the issues and a ballot to approve the best way forward.
Can we approve the ballot paper first before we have the ballot...
Aaargh, that really didn't do it justice!
Ok, a bit of Ramones, Patti Smith, some moments, but significant over here, not really. Sex Pistols at the start, but it was more than just them, they were just the catalyst for the better stuff that came after. And that sheer diversity just didn't come across. And did it all really end with PIL going off into the sunset, nah, Johnny, you really weren't that good, 3 anthems end of story. The Clash took it on, The Jam and the Stranglers were in the mix as well and no mention of them........ho hum gonna have a beer to calm down!:(
Okay then...quiet on here tonight at 9:10 for an hour eh
Looks like a good line-up...!
ARGGGHHHH!
...anybody know if I could use the law of provocation as defense...?
...cos of where my house is (nicely hidden behind a massive mill building) the only way I can get tele is via a satellite. Single feed...single tele. My 12 year old step daughter is watching some utter rubbish (*******) called "Grease is the word" on ITV which doesn't finish till 9:25
...and Mrs Stick's run away to study upstairs with a supportive..."well it is the final..."
...come on JJ, get Chris to give me some legal advice here :(
Well thats a first.
I know its only my sad opinion but the programme was fantastic tonight.
It's not often I look forward to a tv prog this much and then it delevers.
Great footage of early Iron Maiden with Paul DI'anno and early Metallica with Cliff Burton. Great start with Balck Sabbath. The only bit I didn't like was the Motley Crue section but its wasn't too long.:D :D :D :D
:D :D
Got to see the last 45mins. Inspired again to get me bass out tonight... *
*...and who cares if the amp is set up is 3y.o. step-son's room. We can do a bit of male rocker bonding!
Not bad at all. Good stuff on Purple and Sabbath. Made sure my son was watching to get the Smoke on the Water story straight! Mind you can't take that American glam metal stuff very seriously, Motley Crue, yuk!
Missed it, bugger. And Doctor Who. Forgot all about them. Bloody fell running.
Viddied the repeat last night. Do you want to borrow it?
Yesterdays program was rubbish. Metal is rubbish!
Yes please Margarine. Always had you down as a bit of a greaser.:D
Don't suppose you taped Dr Who as well did you?
My wife was hiding behind a cushion and nearly left the room when he glanced away and the statue nearly got him...
But Seven Ages of Rock! Very odd that they did such a big bit on Genesis when they got nowhere in the charts at the time. Interesting footage though (they wereone of the first bands I liked when I got into music 20 years ago, but I lost interest when I found VDGG). Someone suggested listening to "Seconds Out" - don't! It's a travesty ;-) Seriously - it's a very odd introduction to the Peter Gabriel songs to listen to Phil Collins singing them - the version of Supper's Ready was a big disappointment in particular.
Looks like I missed last nights stadium rock one, doing a bit of stadium rock practical instead - Muse at Wembley. Terrific stuff, very good gig indeed from "anthems are us" Devon lads. Crowd loved them.
Now how do they rate compared with the stadium gods on last nights prog. Well, pretty well I would say, but not up there with the very best I have seen, Led Zep and U2......U2 at the old Wembley, oooh Zooropa was it??? help me Wheeze.....Bono and the Edge, out in the crowd on a stage extension, rain pouring down, as close to heaven as you can get!!!!!!!
Minor quibles last night with last nights sound, a sound desk problem not the band methinks, vocals a bit indistinct, stadium thing I reckon and Matt Bellamy needed his guitar turning up. There are some fantastic swooping shards of stuff that he plays, I really wanted to be nailed to the back of the stadium wall by them, and good as he was, and he was bloody good, I didn't quite get that. Nonetheless, excellent gig:) :) :)
It was Achtung Baby, ZooTV tour. We were there.
Didn't think much of last nights efforts.
As much as i love them, Since when did the Indie scene start with the Smiths?
Joy Division/New Order, or Factory weren't even mentioned which is rather like doing the history of punk without mentioning the Sex Pistols.
It seems like this is major attempt to totally revise music history. Everything has been coming out a bit distorted thus far. Toff and I reckon it's prob coz its written with an american audience in mind.
How can you have a programme about the indie scene without even once mentioning Fay Wray? Or Erics?? pah!
