Anyone coming over to Settle for the Hills race tomorrow?
A tad warm today but still enjoyed it. Its been a few years since I last did this race but all the memories came flooding back. Achilles tendons complaining on the first climb and lungs complaining on the run in at the end :D.
My thanks to Settle Harriers.

A bit of a panic driving over from Wetherby. Couldn't find a loo at the start so had to do "a Paula" en route which put me firmly at the back of the field. Managed to run the first climb (WHY?) then it was all about digging in and being a fell running tourist. Thoroughly whacked at the end but glad I had a go.
Yes - many thanks to Jules and her team of marshalls who did a superb job again yesterday. It was good to see so many young ones helping out (and they are sure to become equally as superb when they are organising the event in years to come!)
Good to see you Alf, although the weather was very different from when we reccied the "Trog" wasn't it??

anyone no what settle hills is like thinking of going sunday, what can i expect under foot conditions to be like? (not run for 2 week man flu)
This is the area where I run all the time (the race finishes running along Watery Lane which is about 100 yards from my house) - the going under foot will be fine, its very grassy and fantastic running most the way. There's one big area of uber tussock grass at the top of the race route and one nut case descent off of High Hill but other than that its limestone country running at its best. (I've never done the actual race by the way :) )
What a cracker of a race! Harrier website says there's a bit of everything and Stolly sums it up. The steep decent was a bit hairy. Good job it wasnt wetter under foot or we would all have piled down on our arses. Wonderful route, beautiful setting, spot-on weather, perfect sized field (I think about 75 ran) and a dead friendly feel to it all. Thx to Settle Harriers and their stewards :)
good race glad i went 1st run in 2 weeks n went well very similar to my local training route climb n underfoot conditions so felt right at home
thanks to the many marshalls/ helpers hope to see you next year
p.s 79 ran woodenlegs
Cracking race, varied terrain, great scenery and the marshall's were excellent, overall a really enjoyable one:thumbup: a 12th spot for me, so a good effort.:)
A few snaps from the bottom of the downhill that everyone loved.

Cheers trainspotta - nice to see my @rse sliding descent wasn't caught on film.
Thanks also to the organisers and the marshalls for putting on a cracking race with a little bit of everything ...
Thanks to RO for putting out the Heptonstall flyers - was helping out at CVFR Midsummer Madness - but must make it a date for next year.
Settle Hills Race 2012 - The start is at 10:30am this year (earlier than last year). We had two different times showing on the web site for a while - sorry about that.

Doesn't seem too self-indulgent to me. At least you're not demanding flowers, breakfast in bed, endless cups tea, etc, etc that seem to be expected on Mothers' Day.
Not sure what you mean about the T-shirts? There was once a Settle Hills Race T-shirt printed about 10 years ago. Now a valued collector's item. You could have mine for £50 (Size L, slightly used) ;-).
However, other attractions that ARE on offer are:
- Hot showers
- Mini Olympics for the kids (starting at 11am)
- Bouncy castle
- Kids' treasure trail
- Cake stall
All in all a bumper fun day for everyone.
What a fantastic race with a little bit of everything, all credit to the race organisers and marshalls. Was happy with my run today finishing 26th despite still carrying a injury. It was also great to have some events for the younger children.
Sorry Boxers - think I was getting this race confused with another who were planning to print T-shirts, but as fate would have it I actually won a Salomon T-shirt as a spot prize! How weird is that?
Anyway, a really good turn out, nice route and a great atmosphere. Echo the thoughts re activities for younger children. My daughter isn't old enough to race so I would only take her along if I know there will be something she can do.
Also echo the thoughts re organization. Thanks to the Settle team who were out in force and in particular to the marshall who called me back when I went wrong. In a figure-of-eight course it is apparently important not to get to the midway cross-over point and go back down the bit you first came up... whoops.
And good to meet another forumite (Wharfeego) in the flesh for the first time. He looks nothing like his picture...
Did anyone else find an unusual amount of grass after their post-race bath/shower? I had enough to feed a small goat left in the plughole.
First time at Settle Hills for me. I really enjoyed it. That's quite a descent!

A reminder that the Settle Hills Race is a bit earlier than normal this year - on 19th May because it's the Intercounty Fellrunning Championships.
There are junior races (U16 and U18) but these are pre-entry only and limited to county teams.
Senior race is entry on the day but county teams need to be pre-entered.
See full details at http://www.settleharriers.org/settlehills_race.htm
Further questions...
I am a county selector also and wanted to check about the senior men. It is 5 to run (not 4) and 3 to count? Also, are substitutions allowed on the day,as per last year?
Cheers.
Other notable features of the Settle Hills race are hot showers and the opportunity for some post-race retail therapy with the race sponsors Castleberg Sports from Settle who have a one-off clearance sale of stock at trade prices or below. Castleberg are also providing spot prizes so stick around for the prize-giving.
Junior races update from the race organizer:
The Junior Courses will now start up the hill, 500m along the route at the top of the gravelled lane, in the first field [GR824641].
This reduces the distance by 500m and 70m of climb.
Allow 15min walk time from the Rugby club to the start (about 1.2km), signage and marshals will be in place to direct people.
Competitors may leave clothing or bags at the start and it will be brought back to the Rugby Club.
As its a cat B race, does it get the same level of kit requirements as Cat A's?
from what i can see on fra site it only specifies mandatory for cat A medium and long events (although they can still insist on it for any cat race if RO sees fit.)
Quote:
The core requirements concerning equipment are set down in paragraph 9 of the Safety Requirements. The requirements in this paragraph represent “best practice” at all FRA races and are mandatory at all category A Long and Medium FRA races.
Just wondering, is there a map of the junior race route, and what is the amended race distance?
Also are the juniors required to carry full kit or is it just the seniors?
Thanks
Junior race route is as Seniors except :-
1. They start 500m up the course as mentioned above.
2. They avoid the Loop at the North East, so at route junction they turn South and head for home.
Juniors should come equipped to carry the same kit as Seniors. They tend to ask for (up to) full body cover, which may be waterproof so best to have waterproof available.
They are unlikely to ask for map, compass, whistle on a fully marked course.
I've seen kit asked for at Sedbergh Uphill, World Trial Uphill (Patterdale) last year and this year at Cowpe last week, so it is a regular occurance that all juniors need to be prepared for.
Does anyone know the correct start time for the senior race?
it is listed as 12:00 on Settle Harriers website http://settleharriers.org/settlehills_race.htm
and 10:00 on the FRA race page http://fellrunner.org.uk/races.php?id=2554
