What I can't get is the chronology.

At least one bolt was there in early Jan but there is now mention of 5.

I will check that Stephen Reid is reading all this.

    Re: Bolts on Broad Stand

I wonder if the "bolt" reported in January was in fact the peg with the rusty maillons attached to it, and the actual bolts have gone in since then.

It doesn't make much sense for someone to place several solid bolts, and then put in a dodgy peg as well.

so its not just a bolt out of the blue then?
I thought Lords Rake was closed? is this a fairly straightforward route as i do not fancy bolting over Broad stand.
sorry about going slightly off topic (sorry thats made of nuts to go on the bolts) but it was just the earlier comments regarding Lords Rake that prompted the question

Lords Rake has never been "closed" WMR have advised it is in a dangerous condition.

Going into the hills is a personal decision and you are responsible for yourself.

In wet conditions I would much rather go via Lords Rake than Broad Stand as I think the risk is less, but I've also been alert for any stonefall, kept well on the righthand side and moved very quickly up it.

In dry conditions Broad Stand is the quickest way but maybe not if your faffing about with ropes and thinking your going to die

vertigo is my biggest problem. last time I went from Scafell to Scafell Pike I went via Foxes tarn and down the gully which is obviously the long way round but I have never been up Lords Rake and was wondering what it is like

It's a narrow gully (probably a dyke really) with a loose base. Steep enough to be awkward but not steep enough to require ropes. Going up there are three rises and two descents at the top of the first rise you can traverse leftwards on a broad sloping terrace (known as West Wall Traverse) into Deep Gill above all the climbing in that gully and then easily to the summit area of Scafell. The top of Lord's rake is some way down the Wasdale flank of Scafell.

A long time since I've been up in Lord's Rake (certainly not since the rock fall some years ago) but I'll be up there next weekend as I'm supporting a BG attempt and the contender wishes to go that way.
