I'm with Matthew on this. The Rab is a much more friendly, low key event..and the weather is always good!
It's a score event too so you can do as little or as much as you want. My Mrs does it with her mate and she isn't a mountain goat by any means, but between them they have a go, do quite well and what's more...enjoy themselves. 2013 will be my 5th Rab MM and it is one of my favorite events in the year.
I do the OMM too, which is also great event, but just seems too crowded.

Thanks both. The weather and the sleeping out doesn't bother me so much, but the 'crowds' really would I think.

Still, the chance to run the OMM on relatively 'home ground' will swing it for this year.

Sorry, just a follow up question after seeing a picture of OMM tent city on facebook - you don't have to camp with the masses do you?

I read somewhere on the site that if you don't show you'll be presumed to have camped safely, so do you lose any points if you don't turn up? Can you turn up and then f' off for a betterr night sleep somewhere else? Quite used to bivvying so not a problem finding somewhere a bit more peaceful...

You've definitely got to use the designated camp(s). Rules regarding external support, people slipping off to the pub (happened at the Saunders!), etc cannot be policed if folk wonder off from camp. Day one finishes at the campsite (or campsites - occasionally the longer courses have a different camp) and that's it. It is pretty big, but given that it's dark and you're in tent, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Re. the Rab (also Saunders and LAMM), it is smaller and I guess I've found it more enjoyable in some ways because of the smaller numbers involved. However, I do think the OMM is the toughest event because of the time of year. If you want to avoid the crowds (and there are crowds on the D, C and B classes) go for one of the score classes. The long night in camp and the usual bad weather are all part of the testing nature of the event. Also, I reckon a win or high placing at the OMM is tougher to achieve than at other MMs.

    Great, thanks Hank.

Like I said, tough is good. Crowds were slightly off putting, but there you go.

Entry is in now (C class, as it's our first) so I'll wait and see if we get a place.

Good stuff. I'm sure you'll get a place. I'm pretty sure it didn't fill up last year. C class is a good bet for the larger classes as part of the course each day involves an element of score-type route choice which splits the field up a bit. Enjoy!

Robin - you could probably still find some peace and quiet if you are prepared to walk to the far end of the field- far away from toilets and water supply and results. Each mid camp is a bit unique but last years for example was on quite a hilly set of fields- if you were prepared to walk to the far bottom corner there would not have been many tents near you
