    The OMM

    Hi All,

Put this in here to save clogging up other sections, but can anyone tell me the 'minimum requirements of experience' for an OMM entry? I assume this changes between line and score and category?

Also, I assume they wait until all entries are in before making the draw, rather than first come first served. Correct?

I'm sure this is on here somewhere, but couldn't find it thanks.

    Cheers

    Rob

    Re: The OMM

I'm not sure if there is a minimum requirement, I'd check the OMM website for that, I think they look for a level of experinece in the mountains, navigation, long distance, challenging events, etc. that kind of evidence that you haven't just spotted it on the wall at the gym and think the treadmill training will be enough.

It's usually first come I think, it's unusual for all categories to fill up though so you may be offere an alternative course.

    Hope this answers your questions

    Cheers Don,

I couldn't find much on their website, just they wanted details of, and positions in, previous MMs. This made me think there might have been stricter 'previous experience' required. Thanks for the clarification.

    Entry wise I stand corrected

    From the OMM Website

4.We receive entries in excess of the maximum places available. We therefore operate a selection draw once entry is closed.

5.Entries remaining after the maximum numbers have been reached will be held on a reserve list to be allocated places if available as accepted competitors withdraw from the event.

And the word on the experience

    4. A minimum of mountain experience, navigation and outdoor, is essential and must be completed on the entry form.

    Re: The OMM

The usual MM approach is to vet people applying for the longest 2 or 3 classes. For these classes the rule of thumb I'd use is to go up 1 class per year at most. Your entry point first time depends on your fitness & how well you can navigate. If you're already running longish routes in the mountains & know which end of a compass is which, I'd suggest you start in a class in the middle somewhere. If your navigation is rubbish, or you're new to mountain running, do a short class first & concentrate on improving your skills/fitness first time out. The rules about which class you are allowed to enter vary from MM to MM, but they're all just to steer you to not being over-ambitious before you know what you're getting into.

last year I do not think they had enough entries to need a draw? they were still advertising entries on all courses at a very late stage

Great, thanks all. Just wanted to check whether I needed to be sat by the pc with my credit card at 9am...

And cheers Splatcher - was going to look at the middle to lower classes. Like most things, using it as a target to work toward in terms of fitness and, in this case, navigation skills (i.e. gives me a firm excuse/reason to give to the missus for getting out more often!)

I would strongly recommend the RAB MM over the OMM. But that;s just my opinion...

    Why so Matt?

Don't know much about either but the attraction was mainly that the OMM is on 'home' turf this year.

I did both last year and enjoyed the Rab more. It might be because it's smaller and there are thousands of people milling round. Without meaning to sound soft and nesh it turns out 12hours in a tent in October isn't actually a massive amount of fun. I found that just the combination of too many people and less pleasant weather made it not as much fun.
