Guicko thanks for asking me this.Individuals have no moral responsibility to help anyone, or to expect help.Poverty, illness and disability are not claims on the lives of others.
I think we should abolish the welfare-state.If we did a small number of people would struggle initially. These people could be helped by private charities.
The Welfare-state has no moral basis whatsoever: Why?Because the money to support these institutions has been extorted from the taxpayer. In other words, if people really believed in the NHS, why does the government force them to pay for it?
It's moral responsibility that makes individuals human. Taxes are not extorted from me. It's a privilege to contribute to a civilised society where there is a statutory obligation on the government to help people. What's more if individuals don't like it they are still free to vote against the system. Laissez faire or devil take the hindmost was once a very respectable political philosophy which is why I had to go back to the nineteenth century to find an ironic reference. There are still plenty of non pinko scum lurking around who'd be glad of your vote.
The only thing I require of government is that they leave me alone as much as possible and don't p*ss my money up against the wall. We may find some concurrence in this area.
I am with you and find Christopher Leigh's comments abhorrent. I would also prefer New Labour MPs not to use my money to pay themselves rent for properties they have already paid for. They make me feel sick too.
If individuals have no moral responsibility to help anyone, then who would feel compelled to found and fund the private charities?
I have no problem with paying taxes, it's the mis-spending of those revenues that really galls me....Take the NHS; it's there to cure people of debillitating and life threatening illnesses & injuries; not to offer cosmetic surgery to "hairheads"!![]()

I like the oil companies and supermarkets, because they produce and sell things we need.
No they don't! They produce things. Then via the MEDIA ( one of the real villains in all this ) they convince us that we WANT what they are producing.

I bought a bag of fruit pastilles from tescos for 48p.Three months ago they were 42p.That is an inflation increase of approx 14%.That 6pence is what the government have taken without you even knowing it!
The last time I bought a tube of fruit pastilles they were elevenpence ha'penny, from Ma' Aldren's corner shop!

Spot on Rodders! Apart from they don't "need everything now". They just "want" everything now. A generation that must have instant coffee NOW! Rather than waiting for perculated.
WELL! I think that's me done with putting the world to rights and keeping you lot on track..

I have an allotment with a friend, we took over it about 5 years ago now, really is one of the best things i've done. Can grow such a variety of things, and could be time well spent with the kids too if you have any, but it's definitely a cost saving on the grocery bill, just a thought:d
Fuel is a difficult one, i'd love to lower my carbon footprint and try to when possible, but I do travel quite far to some races....things we can do such as car share, pick more local races etc but on the price of fuel and the high tax it would be interesting to see a breakdown of where tax on fuel is actually spent. Why isn't more of it invested in public transport..
so here is my idea, like the tv licence I think we should have one payment a year (but paid monthly if poss etc) that allows us to use any public transport for free, all the money from it would go to putting on more busses, accessing more peoples works etc and because it is a mandatory charge people would want to use it to get their value. This wouldnt stop people using cars and nor should it, but I think it would eventually get people realising that public transport can work and be efficient, over time it would develop, the routes that are more popular have more busses. So there will be many flaws with a new system etc but as an idea I do think it has benefit as well as potential.
