Lots of CL's views are hard to refute, and it is hard to argue with someone who seems so unwilling to acknowledge that there might be validity in opposing points of view. He obviously has read a bit of political theory, and there seems to be some cohesion in his vision. It may be 'natural' to live in the way he prescribes and it is easy to see how this vision fits in with 'the laws of the jungle' . I think that capitalism developed out of feudalism and gave rise, via technology/mass media etc. to consumerism, and it is this which threatens our existence. I am not a political theorist and I know I am about to be shot down by CL but I believe capitalism is an inherently BAD IDEA and free market economics are bad environmentally, morally and socially. I think that Marx was basically right when he predicted that capitalism would eventually collapse, he said it would be dismantled when the workers took control of the means of production - government has prevented that from happening, and we are all too entranced by material comfort and cheap shit to start the revolution, but if there is to be hope for us, capitalism will be replaced by 'green' political thinking which works at a local level and is antithetical to globalisation and the vested interests of corporations and their puppets. This might all be complete cobblers, but I find CL's views utterly depressing and even if he is right, I choose another way.
I don't agree with any of this.
Karl Marx insisted that socialism, is the most efficient means of securing that which human beings strive for, namely material goods.
The truth is the opposite happened.Every country that implemented socialism in it's undiluted form(without any capitalist element)ended up in ruins.
Interestingly it was Russia that fully practised, what Marx preached. That country was begging for American(capitalism) wheat, even though it had some of the best agricultural land in the world.
Coupled with the millions murdered under that regime(for the greater good), it's obvious that socialism is vicious in theory and evil in practise.
I also find Grouse's final comments dishonest. He says that even if I'm right, he'll choose another way.So, if what I'm saying is true and good, he in defiance of this will do the opposite!
>>Stop getting hung up on definitions - it doesn't help your argument. A word means what its user wants it to mean.
If a word means whatever it's user intended, how the hell do you expect me to understand a word you're saying!
I find it amazing that people get so wound up about real or perceived unfairness in society, especially in the UK where internationally we are probably fairer than most. I’ve lost previous jobs to what I’d consider outrageous unfairness but you can’t just sit on your arse grumbling about it or trying to change the now unchangeable; just bash on and do something positive about the situation you find yourself in. Outlook in life I think is everything and quoting Yossarian from Catch 22 it pays to ‘live . And they make bugger all profit on selling petrol at the pump.
If life is 'unchangeable' how can you do something positive. If life is unchangeable, there can't be any positive or negative.
we dont take all this too seriously you see
Daz It was a bit tongue in cheek, because I know you take this discussion seriously.I certainly do take this seriously, for all the reasons I've stated already. It's in My interests to try and convince people I'm right, and fight for the sort of world I'd like.
Some very good points have been made on this thread, but some are treating it like a game, by going over the same old ground. You haven't done that and I give you credit for that, and also for starting a brilliant thread.

You should've stuck a big smiley after that terse remark Christopher. Now you've spoiled yourself.
I'm going to drop out of this lot now. See if you or Ayn can come up with anything to say that might be memorable in any way.
This is what I've got:
"And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make." The Beatles (Paul McArtney)
"Not Love again!" Lord Voldemort
"All you need is Love." The Beatles (John Lennon)
