Tried my Silva LX Head torch tonight. Just did a short 4 miler around Pex Hill. Found it to be very comfortable just took a bit of getting used to running with a head torch. Nice run on a route I was familiar with. Looking forward to the Helsby Hill recce next week on a route I am not familiar with. A bit eery running in the dark along trail and XC paths.

You could have used fish skins....An original "little stinkie"! ( "Premier" carbide lamp to be technically correct)
Here is a picture I found showing a group of underground fell runners preparing for another reccie. Possibly beneath Yorkshire judging by the footwear....earthen oil lamps were used at first, until the fear of falling led to the use of dried fish skins from which a faint phosphorescence was emitted. It is obvious, however, that such a method must have led to fell running being carried on practically without light.
I have the same headtorch as Pinno, felt good running with it and offered good light, I like the way you can adjust the angle really simply and it stays confidently in each position. Idler's Alpkit headtorch did the job too and even had a red light at the back and for half the price!

If I was flush I might look at the new Petzl Myo XP, the grey one.
I've used my new Myo XP quite extensively now but I'm not overly impressed with it. The good points are its light weight and compact dimensions. The easy adjustability of the beam angle when running is also good, but niether of the beams (with diffuser and without) are quite right and no-one would say, subjectively, that it is 3-times brighter than the old model (which is what Petzl claim).
I might go back to using the Duo....
The problem with light is that you do not percive it linearly. You need 4 times the intendsity to percive it as twice as bright.

Well, I guessed it was something like that. The salient lesson is don't be too easily impressed with the manufacturers figures.
Well, I've given the Myo XP 08 a fair crack of the whip now but have gone back to using the (much bulkier/heavier) Duo with 14LED module. It's old technology now but it definitely gives a much more runner-friendly light. A perfect wide cone of light at just the right intensity!
I think this is now year three with the Duo and i've seen nothing short of a Silva 480 that betters it as a running light. Manufacturers are too obsessed with beam length, when it's the quality of light in the 5-20m range that really counts for night fellrunning.
