Probably a good idea, and best make it one in the Lakes or Scotland. At the very least do some Lakes mediums, there are plenty coming up. I imagine Scoffer doesn't want anyone who is liable to get lost or complain that there are too many rocks and cliffs.

It's a bit flat where you come from Hot foot ~ you need to move to the hills. That should get you experienced.

    Borrowdale - don't forget!!!!

Get your oar in as quick as you can from 31st May . From the Borrowdale web site:

    Borrowdale Fell Race 2008

There will be no entries taken on the day for the Borrowdale Fell Race in 2008.

Potential competitors must apply to enter the race by means of the official Borrowdale Fell Race entry form. That form will not be made available nor will any entries be accepted before 31st May 2008.

Please do not try to enter without the official form and please do not ask the Race Organiser for an entry form before 31st May.

After 31st May, entry forms will be available to download from this website. Forms will also be available after 31st May by post (please send a stamped self addressed envelope) from the Race Organiser - Andrew Schofield, End Yan, Jenkin Hill, Thornthwaite, Keswick, CA12 5SG.

The Race will be limited to 500 competitors. The first 500 entries received, from appropriately experienced runners, after 31st May will be accepted. No entries received after 7th July will be accepted.

    Date: 2nd August 2008

Start and Finish: Scafell Hotel, Rosthwaite

    Start Time: 11.00 am

Route: 17 miles including 6500 feet of ascent and visiting the following checkpoints:-

    1 Bessy Boot summit 258125
    2 Esk Hause shelter 235083
    3 Scafell Pike summit 215072
    4 Great Gable summit 211104
    5 Honister Hause 225135
    6 Dalehead summit 223154

The route to Bessy Boot will be through Chapel Farm and up Rottenstone Gill.

Please note that the Borrowdale Fell Race is classed as a category A long race. The race route covers some of the roughest ground in England. Even in August inclement, difficult and sometimes dangerous weather conditions may be encountered.

Navigational skills are essential. Competitors must find their own way around the course. Visibility may be poor during the race and following the runner in front may not be feasible.

THIS RACE IS NOT SUITABLE FOR NOVICE FELL RUNNERS.

Entries: Please see separate entry details. NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED ON THE DAY.

Registration: From 9.00 am in the marquee opposite the Scafell Hotel.

Equipment: All competitors must carry windproof whole body cover (waterproof equipment may be required subject to the weather on race day), a map of the course, a compass, a whistle and emergency food.

Refreshments: Tea and sandwiches will be served to all competitors after the race in Rosthwaite Institute.

The Honister Hause Checkpoint will close at 3.30 pm. Competitors who arrive at Honister Hause after 3.30 pm will be required to retire from the Race. Competitors, who continue around the Race Route after having been required to retire from the Race, will no longer be regarded as competing in the Race and will be reported to the Fellrunners' Association.

Those competitors, who retire from the Race at Honister, must return to the start/finish at Rosthwaite by road. That is, down the Honister Pass, through Seatoller to Rosthwaite.

I hope the organiser is going to allow for the vagaries of Royal Mail. First class letters and cards in the Saturday morning collection from where we shall be staying in the Highlands (for the Slioch race, 31st May) have been taking anything from 2 to 6 days to reach addresses in England. With things the way they are, how about letting the entries - on line or postal - pile up for a few days, then if they have passed the limit, it's the first n100 out of the hat? No doubt this is not a new idea.

is the entry online or after downloading the entry form do you have to print it out and post it?

    Be patient.
But the answer to your question is that you will have to post the form off, the good old fashioned way, along with an SAE.
