PAUL WARD A RUN AWAY WINNER !!! I JUST HAPPEN TO WORK WITH THE LAD,HE IS NOT FROM A RUNNING BACKGROUND !! BUT HAS DEDICATED HIMSELF TO RUNNING FOR THE LAST 18 MONTHS !! NOT BAD FOR A BEGINNER AN INSPIRATION TO US ALL. ESPECIALLY ME,ON MY COMEBACK TO RUNNING AFTER 6 YEARS OUT AND ALREADY SPORTING A PULLED CALF !!!!!!!![]()
Managed to struggle through it.
I'm not sure how it was compared to last year. Certainly a lot wetter, but not as cold.
I finished this time 12th in 8:48 - half an hour faster than last time, but still lost a fair bit of time navigating / getting lost.
I didn't bother with kit changes (or gloves). Hands were numb with the cold- so much so that I couldn't grip the nice warm cup of tea at 30 miles and spilt it over myself. Instant warming!
Well, that was epic. The BBC rainfall prediction was not quite accurate, was it? I was looking forward to ditching the heavier weight coat at the 30mi checkpoint but ended up being very thankful for its warmth through to the end.
The freshly ploughed fields were quite a challenge. I was stumbling around like a drunkard as I tried to run across the knobly slime. Running seemed easier than trying to walk across.
There may have been floods but the one benefit of the excess water was that it soon washed the platforms off our shoes after the field crossings.
Really sorry you had to retire Chris. Sorry I didn't hang around but I wanted to get going again as soon as the blood sucker had finished with me. Commiserations to everyone else who had to retire.
It was certainly cold out there, especially on leaving an indoor checkpoint. Once on the go I managed to remain pretty comfortable. I ran in shorts, without gloves. Like last year I really enjoyed the short, lonely run from the last checkpoint to the finish. The gel I had taken just before the last checkpoint had given me a new lease of life and I was catching the group in front on the approach to the college. I was amazed to finish with a PB.
Socks, it was good to see you before the start.
Well done to all the finishers and the speedy ones in those hostile conditions. I was well chuffed to finish in 50th place, probably the highest placing I'll ever get in that event![]()
Well done Nick. Your bug obviously didn't materialise then? Are you part of some research programme? Started running with a lady who'd done a 48 miler last weekend. Only doing Rotherham because of the monitoring, but didn't get chance to ask any more about it.
That was Jo I guess - I ran (just behind her) last week during the 48 miler in Brecon. Ran with her shortly after the start this saturday but she bailed at CP2 which was a shame.
I was doing the research too but with the conditions and the 48 miler last saturday was down on my time.
I put up my version of events here ... http://www.ultramarathonmike.co.uk/b...fest-08?blog=2
Really had to dig deep towards the end and couldn't squeeze even a sub 12hr![]()
Just doing it for the monitoring !!
I presume it was all pre-arranged from what I saw on Saturday. Also I did hear the chap carrying out saying he may have to do it again due to the number of guinea pigs dropping out.
All very pre-arranged. there was a small part of me doing it for the monitoring but I would have continued regardless even after Brecon monitoring or not! I was suprised how many being monitored did bail which was a shame. Two that I know seemed to for the right reasons...
Anyway - If it wasn't difficult it wouldn't be so much fun!
That was one thing I did notice about a lot of the drop outs they weren't novices and in some cases far from it.
