If the temperature has failed to get above freezing by 3 in the afternoon; then just think how cold it will still be at 08.30 when you are starting Leg1.....it will still be as cold as if it was pre-dawn. Another question.
I dont have any plans of jetting of into the distance and leaving my partners behind - honest Karen!
But, is the a furthest distance ahead you can get from your partner...alternatively....how far behind can you drop.
From what I've seen in previous years, the marshals will not allow a change-over to take place if your partners is more than around 10 yards adrift, technically both members of the pair should hand-over to the next leg, together. It does not psychologically help the weaker partner if the stronger partner disappears over the horizon. If you are worried about being dropped by the storming K.N. - I reckon she has enough experience and savvy to nurse you round like a true professional.

But are you allowed to scoot ahead to open gates?
Just printed my map off and high-lighted my map, put my number on my vest the other night (combination of not being able to get to sleep and also to preventing not forgetting it) - Just have to make sure i dont forget the vest!
Are the thorough (spelling) with the kit search?
A lead of 50 yards should be enough for opening gates - a good tip, as you approach the gate look for the hinges; you need to be at the other end of the gate to undo it. Seems very basic; but you'll be surprised how many knackered/disorientated teams you will see, wasting time by making an initial attempt to find the fastener at the hinge end.
Just be certain to re-group to encourage one another along and for the change-over. KN will have it all-sorted, I'm certain.
They ought to be very strict - snow flurries are forecast, they could insist on 'fully waterproof, full-body cover'. Remember hat & gloves!

On your second point, ive got my new OMM smock and new Montane trouser things....not worn either yet but looks like the smock may be coming out for a run.
