Yes that's the one. Thanks for the directions. Is your map the BMC Harvey map? (Shows checkpoint 6 (top of Gt. Coum).)
Check with the organisers but possibly just a photocopy of the next section would be sufficient (eg. from OL2).
From CP6 (701835) head ~330 to 691851 and follow track to Dent.
I have ordered the West map - that covers the bit I have missing which is also the section you describe. As I can't check the map until it arrives, do you know whether any of this section is out of bounds?
Thanks
Stef
couple of questions if someone can help;
-coming off whernside, which is route is used, straight down (w) to the road or come back on yourself and make way across?
-am i right in thinking the hardest navigating, i know this may be dependent where you are (and nightime aside) is the harder part getting from redshaw to cray? looking at map theres less, if any at points tracks/lines to follow.
donlarko, abbreviation ST is this stile? dave
Once you have reached Whernside CP you need to retrace your steps and follow the ridge down for around a mile to the stile at 725789 before heading down High Brown Hill Pasture to Kingsdale Beck & the CP at Yordas Cave.
Redshaw to Snaizeholme CP is quite straight-forward (they are very close to each other), although in the dark a few people do tend to take strange routes up to Dodd Fell. The worst / most navigational errors seem to occur between Fleet Moss and Cray.
Just a warning Egor the Stile off whernside isn't always there so use the 'Kink' in the wall just short of the Stile as a target point. If the stile isn't visible within 100m Climb over at that point. Lots of people ran down the wall line until they got to the stile a 2-3 years ago and it wasn't therethey ended up a mile or so further down the ridge.
Fleet moss is THE place to get to before dark and as Anorak say's is the trouble spot on the whole route. Worth going down on one knee for a moments prayer before entering. You've pretty much got it in the bag once you get to Cray
I sent off my entry for this years fellsman about 3 weeks ago but had nothing back from them. Cheque has been cashed. So i'm guessing i'm in!
Just wondering how long it took for the handbook and number to arrive?
I agree Fleet Moss - Middle Tongue - Cray definitely the hardest part of the whole route - mentally, phisically and 'navigationally' - well worth a look if you've not done it before.
The only other part that can be trickey in bad vis is over and off Gt Whernside - at this point most normal humans are pretty wrecked, it's dark and there's no distinct track off the summit. You certainly need a bearing off the checkpoint that takes you on to the fence line.
Sent my entry off 3 weeks ago as well ,cheque's not been cashed and no reply to an e-mail enquiry to the organisers !
Are you doing a lap this year N&G ?
If it's misty watch your line from Gt Coum to the "Flintergill " checkpoint
