Not much chance of me insulting you merry - we might share hair styles but I'm considerably lardier than you

    Re: Fellsman

Okay my preparation for this couldn't have been more last minute - I had to buy an OMM back pack, a plastic mug and a spork yesterday and have now sat down trying to plot my route (or possible route) between checkpoints.

The first obvious gap in my knowledge is the line off of Whernside to Yorda's Cave. I know the stile to hop over, a couple of hundred metres down from Whernside trig, which puts me into a large open fell side - I suspect there's no advantage in aiming a true diagonal to Yorda's, which would probably require hopping a wall, but is it best to hack in a line for the farm at Kingsdale Head and then follow the road or to just go straight down due east to the road? Its obviously not that important but I must put my dotted line on the map properly

I'm okay on the line down into Dent and intend to follow the same line to Flinter Gill off of Great Coum that I did at last years Whernside fell race. I'm okay to Blea Moor too I think, following the track that skirts the north end of the Whernside ridge, but presumably hacking off in a straightish line south west for Blea Moor when the track turns south? After that to be honest the map doesn't look too bad with obvious or as the crow flies hops, looking okay to wing on the day, between fairly closely grouped checkpoints.

But is there anywhere else I need to worry about on the navigational front?

Sorry I've just noticed the section in the manual "points to observe on the route" which gives me all sorts of navigational instructions!

99% of the navigational prlblems will come after Fleet Moss - looks straightforward on the map but unless you are quick you will find yourself on open fell in the dark - thats when GPS can help !
Unless you are well in front there should be few problems navigating the bits before Dent as there will always be someone around you.

OK i have got my route plotted and it shows 59.6 miles and 11500ft of asent is that sounding about right?.

This weeks forecast makes it look like Fleet moss could be heavy going

See you at the weekend folks.

Hoping to get across Fleet Moss and Middle Tongue (which I found even worse last time) before dark. Fingers crossed for nice weather Saturday !
