I've just skimmed 26 pages of Borrowdale thread looking for the smut - where was it? I don't have the opportunity to log on much these days please don't tease me like this
Stolly - you could be more wrong but not much, honest.
xx
I think one of the many good things about this forum is that is largely self-policing. I know several regular posters on here agree with this. Therefore I'm not convinced we need occasional visitors suggesting what we can or cannot post
tbh I don't like the use of the t-word (and no I don't mean 'track') but now big Dave C's started using it on air it's perhaps more acceptable than I thoughtCall me old fashionecd but I don't see the need for swearing on the forum but that's just my own view and you can tell me to feck off if you like

I have just reread this post before submitting it, it rambles a bit but I stand by it.
I think this is an interesting but not straightforward point. At what point does humour or teasing become abuse and offensive and who decides it is offensive, the person or group towards who the comments are directed or outside observers.
I have read the comments on the Borrowdale thread and do not find them offensive and have previously made what could be called "gay flirtatious comments myself (and had similar comments made back) , despite the fact I am not gay and to the best of knowledge nor are the people the comments have been aimed at. I am not sure why the Borrowdale thread comments were seen as offensive, is it because they were not made by gay people. If the people who made them were openly gay would that then be ok and why does the fact that they are made by non gay people make them homophobic rather than humorous?
Where comments in other threads have been jokingly made about forum members who are not gay having a same sex sexual encounter is this offensive and if so to who and why. Does the fact they are made deem them as "anti" that group? After all in the Borrowdale comments there is nothing that says directly that gay people are "bad" or "morally wrong".
After all there is often flirting and comments of sexual or suggestive nature between male and female members instigated by both sexes, but I have not as yet seen a complaint that they subjugate woman or stereotype men as being macho and sexist, but are and do they?
However if there were to be what others deemed humorous comments about people with a learning disability from people who did not have one I would find that offensive. I occasionally wince when I hear or see comments about people being "thick or stupid", as I would see this a potentially as mocking rather than commenting on others. So where do you draw the line and would I be right to think this?
On a forum like this where most people only know the perception of the person as they present themselves in print sometimes using a name or style to present aspects of character (e.g Antisocial), is the issue here around our lack of knowledge about each other's values? I am assuming the people making comments are not homophobic or serious about the comments they make because I using my value judgement and am assuming the people making the comments have the same ones. If they don't and some people are actually are being abusive, or even if they are not they are genuinely offending others - what is the answer? ban anything other than factual discussion?
Finally I think the points Henry has made are valid because the comments he refers to have upset him, whether he is right to be upset or not again depends on interpretation and values. However I do think some of the responses made to his post and more especially to Balin on the main Borrowdale thread are inappropriate (and in the case of Balin potentially abusive depending on how you read it) to what is a serious point and obviously an issue of concern to those individuals.
If they no longer contributed to the forum would members be happy its because they perceived the forum to be homophobic or racist (and there is anti homophobic legislation out there), especially if they spread this belief through there friends and networks. After all we only represent a small number of the fell running community.
Balin, Henry or others happy to continue this debate through the pm system rather than on the main forum if people prefer.
