I'm in (and wearing road shoes for this one!) Far, far too much hard pack and roads for my poor feet - the up bits are quite nice. Hoping to get round in sub 8 this year.

Kit check last year was none existent. Put it this way I was the only one out of four who missed a turn (its 98% marked) who had a map to realise the error of our collective ways. I will be carrying far less this year (but will take it to the start just in case things have changed.)

If your slow they insist on a head touch after Castleton (2pm or something is the cut off.)

So are road shoes a definate? Are there any sections where grip is an issue?
Not done many of these- i thought there was too much tarmac at Calderdale!but I'm in now so will give it a good shot.

After the last time I did it the only footware I would use is a road shoe or a light weight trail if it's been really wet. absolutely do not use a fell shoe.

roughest bit is the descent from Hollins cross and the climb out of castleton. rest is road and track.

Agreed. There's a fair bit of stony track running as well as a lot of road, so comfort & cushioning are more important than grip. Having said that I'll be wearing my trusty Roclite 315s as per usual.

I take pleasure in not having any road shoes but am sorely tempted (pun intended) to get a pair for this. Suspect it'll be trusted 315s though

I always wear trail shoes for this one unless it's bone dry (and it's not) !!

Doesn't look as if I'll be able to offer encouragement to you as you pass our house this year - aiming to do Three Shires instead, but the rest of the family may well give you all a wave.

Outlook is currently for fairly dry and stable weather from now until kick off. I might go trail shoes till Castleton, as I'm lucky enough to have support on the way round, and then road trainers after that but with the forecast the way it is I'm not so sure I'll even bother with trail ones for the first half and just be more cautious across the grass and mud - this isn't a speed event after all.

Whatever shoes you pick - comfort is the way forward. Your feet will get a serious pounding over track and trail.
